Chapter 547 He Is Jealous (Part 1)
"An older man?" Daniel's eyes narrowed, turning icy.
Della had actually called him an older man.
He was only thirty-one.
Lyric had a rebellious streak and never coddled men. Who wouldn't want to give someone a hard time?
"Daniel, you're ten years older than me. If you're not an older man, what are you? If you weren't my boss, I'd be calling you uncle."
Daniel felt a surge of anger. No one had ever called him an older man before. Della really knew how to kill a conversation.
He used to think Della was pretty smart, but now he realized she was also very good at being sarcastic and sharp-tongued.
But to be fair, her work was impeccable. Everything he assigned to her was completed beautifully, without a single flaw.
He couldn't find any fault to exploit.
After work, Daniel heard Lyric's WhatsApp notification from the desk across from him.
He frowned and glanced over, seeing her smiling as she chatted with someone.
Who was Della chatting with? Was she dating someone?
She seemed so happy.
Lyric read the message from her friend: [Your admirer is downstairs at The Taylor Group. Make sure to check him out. His name is Gerald Rivera. He's the heir to The Rivera Family, you know?]
Lyric: [I don't know.] She wasn't familiar with the families in Silverbrook.
Another message came: [The Rivera Family is second only to The Taylor Family and Raymond in Silverbrook. Gerald's family is in real estate, but he's pursuing a career in entertainment. He's a minor celebrity. I found him for you, impressive, right? He'll definitely make Daniel lose sleep over this.]
Lyric replied: [Okay, okay, thanks. I'll go see what Gerald looks like.] She shut down her computer, and left with a smile, grabbing her handbag.
She didn't even glance at Daniel.
Walter walked in just then, and Lyric greeted him cheerfully before leaving.
"Ms. Vaughn, what's got you so happy today?" Walter shook his head with a smile.
Daniel's probing gaze locked onto him. "Still no sign of the woman from that night?"
"No leads at all."
"Useless." Daniel sneered. "You can't even handle this small task."
Walter was about to speak, intending to continue his investigation, when Daniel's phone rang. Seeing it was Cade calling, Walter wisely left.
"Your date's parents want you to visit Regal City to meet the girl. You'll head over next week," Cade ordered bluntly over the phone.
Daniel held the phone, his tone mocking. "If you want to meet her, go yourself. You love playing around with women, and here's your chance."
"Daniel! I'm talking business! This marriage is crucial! You're going whether you like it or not!"
"Why?"
"Because I'm your father. Without me, you wouldn't exist. Daniel, you haven't taken control of The Taylor Family yet. As the heir, you don't get to decide your marriage. I choose the woman you'll marry!"
"I wish you never had me," Daniel said coldly, hanging up.
He felt no attachment to his current life. If he could, he'd prefer to be born into a loving family, with complete parental love.
Even if it meant being poor, without material security.
This world was unfair. Kids were born without a choice, while adults selfishly brought new lives into the world.
They gave birth but didn't nurture, shamelessly calling themselves parents.
Fortunately, his mom, though forced by Cade, stayed optimistic and never took out her anger on him.
She always told him, "Daniel, just be happy. I don't have any demands of you. I don't expect you to be rich or successful. I can't provide good conditions, so I can't ask you to be successful. My only wish is for my son to be healthy, happy, and live a simple life."
Then his mom died.
He saw her one last time after completing a mission. She tearfully told him, "Daniel, I still hope you don't blame your father. He's facing his own karma now, with his wife and daughter gone. He's alone. Listen to him and return to The Taylor Family. Only there will you be the admired Daniel. I want you to have a good life, avoid detours. Being a narcotics officer is too dangerous. Inheriting the family business is your best path."
After his mom died, he didn't immediately return to The Taylor Family.
Throughout his journey, besides his mom's love, there was Margaret. Margaret was his only childhood friend, though they barely interacted.
Later, Margaret married Raymond.
His heart remained locked away for years.
Daniel had locked his heart himself. He dared not rely on anyone anymore; everyone would leave him. He could only rely on himself.
A lonely yet brilliant person, that was what he had become.
He tried to bring sunshine to others while living in perpetual gloom.
Margaret had gone to shine on others too.
Thinking of this, Daniel felt exhausted.
He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples with his long fingers.
He took out a cigarette, lit it, and took a deep drag.
Suddenly, there was a commotion downstairs.
It was noisy.
He called Walter to ask what was happening. Walter said, "A minor celebrity, Gerald, is downstairs at our company. His fans have gathered, it's quite lively. Mr. Taylor, do you need security?"
"No, let it be. It's good publicity for The Taylor Group."
Daniel grabbed his coat and walked out of the office with his long strides.
A few minutes later, he stepped out of the elevator.
Daniel reached The Taylor Group's entrance, seeing it crowded with people.
A throng of fans were shouting Gerald's name.
Even The Taylor Group employees were craning their necks to catch the gossip.
Seeing Daniel, the employees nodded and greeted him.
Daniel wasn't interested in the gossip. He walked straight to his black SUV, opened the door, and got in.
As the car drove away, he glanced out the half-open window and saw not only a punk-dressed, sunglasses-wearing guy, presumably Gerald, but also Della!
Daniel's car screeched to a halt. Gerald, despite his large sunglasses, had a strikingly handsome profile. Daniel had heard of him—a playboy in the entertainment industry, notorious for his scandals.
How did he end up with Della?
