Chapter 601 We Are Destined to Love Each Other Until Old Age
Margaret saw Raymond come home, looking exhausted from the day. She softened her tone and tried to soothe the crying Felicity in her arms. "Felicity, look, Daddy's home. Daddy's home, no more tears."
Felicity lifted her little eyelids and, upon seeing Raymond approaching, stopped crying and stared at him in a daze.
Raymond took Felicity from Margaret's arms, holding her close and rubbing his chin against her soft cheek. "Why are you being so fussy? I was only gone for a little while, and you're already crying like this. Give me a smile."
Felicity looked at him with her big eyes for a long time, still in a daze.
"Have you forgotten me already after such a short time?" Raymond teased.
Instantly, Felicity's face lit up with a bright smile, as radiant as a blooming flower.
"She only wants you now, doesn't care about me or Mary at all. It's true what they say about opposites attracting," Margaret said, feeling a bit down.
Raymond wanted to comfort her, but then he saw her cover her mouth and rush to the bathroom.
He assumed she had eaten something bad and sat on the couch, playing with a toy to amuse the soft little Felicity in his arms.
Felicity, being quite clever, reached out her tiny fingers to touch the toy, then turned around, stood up in his lap, and started touching Raymond's eyebrows, nose, and lips with her open palm.
He smiled at her, and suddenly, she gave him a playful slap on the face.
Though her slap wasn't very strong, it still stung enough to make him wince.
But Felicity laughed happily.
Seeing Felicity so joyful, Raymond's irritation melted away, and he laughed along with her.
After he lulled Felicity to sleep, Mary came up and nodded at him. "Mr. Howard."
"Take her to bed," Raymond said, handing the sleeping Felicity to her.
Taking care of a child was exhausting, even more so than negotiating business deals, and it made him realize just how hard Margaret worked every day.
Margaret hadn't come out of the bathroom yet, and he started to worry. He got up and walked to the bathroom with his long strides, only to find Margaret standing by the sink with the water running full blast.
She was wringing her hands, her face pale.
"Are you okay?" Raymond asked, concerned.
She looked up at the mirror, seeing Raymond in his business suit, then lowered her eyes and carefully washed her fingers. "Lately, I've been feeling pretty nauseous—I think it might be from something I ate. It's so uncomfortable, and I feel like throwing up but can't."
"Is your period normal?"
Margaret's expression changed slightly, and she didn't speak for a long time.
Her silence was an answer in itself.
He said, "Let's go to the hospital tomorrow for a check-up. You might be pregnant."
"How could it be that coincidental?"
"I'll go with you. I missed your prenatal check-ups when you were pregnant with Felicity. I'll make it up to you this time."
Raymond followed her into the bedroom.
She had just sat down at the vanity to take off her earrings when Raymond offered, "Let me do it."
"No need, I can do it myself. You've had a long day at work, you must be tired."
"Compared to you, I'm not tired at all." Raymond gently took off her earrings and handed her the delicate petal-shaped earrings.
She took them and heard him say, "Margaret, from now on, I'll treat you better and be better to our Felicity."
"What's gotten into you today?" she asked, puzzled.
He stood behind her chair, lifting his long fingers to massage her shoulders. "Today I realized how exhausting it is to take care of a child, way more tiring than working at The Howard Group. Margaret, I see all the effort you put into this family, and I respect it. I used to think being a housewife was no big deal, just doing chores. But now I see that housewives are the most remarkable people."
"Don't say that. You're also very tired from work. We just have different roles, but it's all for this family."
"During dinner, I heard Walter say he's interested in one of his female subordinates. He's much smarter than Daniel."
"How so?" Margaret asked, curious.
He was taller than her, so she had to look up at him. She didn't mind looking up to him; if she could, she would want to look up to him for a lifetime.
"The girl he likes is probably quite ordinary. His family definitely wouldn't approve. Guess what he did?"
"What?"
"He tricked her into working closely with him, making her grateful and loyal. He plans to groom her into someone who matches his status, or at least close enough that The Wood Family would accept her. See, he's much smarter than Daniel, right?"
Margaret looked up at him seriously, her lips curling into a smile. "Actually, I did the same with you back then, hoping you'd use my connections and resources to climb up and match me. To show those who looked down on us."
But Raymond's success marked the beginning of her downfall.
The atmosphere instantly became tense.
Raymond's hands, which were massaging her shoulders, paused. He knew all too well the wrongs he had done in the past. If it weren't for Margaret's magnanimity, they would have been over long ago.
There wouldn't be the good days they had now.
"Margaret, it was all my fault. I sought revenge on the wrong person."
"It's all in the past," she said with a relieved smile.
Raymond looked at her and continued massaging her shoulders. "If you could do it all over again, would you still fall in love with me at first sight when we met in college?"
"Raymond, do you want to hear the truth?" Margaret asked with a smile.
He didn't say anything.
Margaret thought for a moment and then laughed, "The answer is no. The path of loving you was filled with thorns, too hard, and I got hurt too much. If I had to do it again, I would give up."
Her voice carried a sense of fragility.
It made him feel even more heartache and affection.
He bent down, hugging her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "It's okay. If we could do it all over again and you didn't like me, I would pursue you."
"Then I might not agree to be with you," Margaret said softly.
He kissed her earlobe. "Then I'd pester you until you did."
"What if pestering doesn't work?" Margaret blocked his lips with her hand, looking at him with interest.
He smiled, "Then on the day you marry someone else, I'd kill myself. And leave all my money and assets to you as a dowry."
"You're being ridiculous," Margaret said, her eyes instantly reddening.
After all the hardships they'd been through, hearing his shameless sweet talk still made her heart flutter. It seemed that loving him was an instinctive reaction, destined by fate.
Raymond picked her up and gently laid her on the bed.
He kissed her lips softly, and she realized that at this moment, his eyes were filled only with her. His gaze was full of deep affection.
"Margaret, you won't stop loving me. We're destined to grow old together. No matter how many times we start over, it will always be the same. So that hypothetical situation doesn't exist. You could never bear to let me die."
