Chapter 111 Heaven Helped Me
Olivia said, "I forgot. We've had quite a bit to drink; it's not suitable to drive."
After dinner, Olivia linked arms with James as they walked out and reached the car. She suddenly slapped her forehead. "How about we call a driver?"
"But I don't want anyone to interrupt our alone time," Olivia muttered, pouting slightly. "I'll drive instead. I've only had three drinks. I'm not the least bit drunk."
As she spoke, she took the keys, opened the car door, sat in the driver's seat, and started the car. "Get in, I'll drive you home."
"Don't move." James grabbed Olivia's hand. He noticed her left foot was swollen, and she was moving stiffly.
He exclaimed, "Did you sprain your ankle?"
Olivia didn't hide it. "During the car accident, I twisted it when I jumped out of the RV, but it's no big deal, just a bit painful. I can bear it."
"It's swollen like this, and you say it's no big dea,!" James glared at her. "You don't feel it now because you're focused and have had some drinks. By midnight, you'll be crying from the pain."
He squatted down, pulled Olivia's foot out of the car, took off her shoe and stocking, and placed it on his knee.
James didn't have a foot fetish, but Olivia's tense arch and the pink and white nails on her toes made him momentarily dazed.
The delicate, rosy foot was captivating.
James's fingers lightly brushed over it, and a blush spread across Olivia's face as she instinctively pulled her foot back.
Then she felt it was too awkward. Despite the strange feeling, she let James treat her.
She had known many men, but none had touched her like this, so she was too shy to even joke.
James said, "You've sprained a tendon, but it's okay. I'll massage it a bit, and it'll be fine."
James didn't notice her shyness; he was just casually helping her.
Moreover, the alcohol made his head feel heavy, and no matter how beautiful the woman in front of him was, he couldn't think of anything else.
"James, what are your plans for the future?" Perhaps feeling the awkward atmosphere, Olivia made small talk. "Are you going to keep being a doctor?"
"Of course, I'll be a doctor, make some money, buy a few houses, take care of my mom, and look for my foster father." James took a swig of soda. "And, of course, once things are stable, I'll get married and have kids."
As for his marriage with Mary, James had no confidence. No matter how he tried, he couldn't change the fact that Mary had no feelings for him.
"With your connections and wealth, you could achieve much more." Olivia smiled softly, brushing James's hair, "Don't you want to aim higher?"
James spoke calmly, "In this dangerous society, the higher you stand, the more you bear. I'd rather have a simple life than a rich one filled with danger."
As he spoke, he took out a silver needle to disperse the blood clot in Olivia's ankle and also helped her sober up.
Olivia muttered, "At your age, you should be ambitious and passionate. How can you be so easily satisfied?"
"Because I learned early on that greed is endless. Once you can't control your desires, you might destroy yourself." James's expression turned a bit sad. "Jennifer used to be a good girl. She not only rejected many guys who were better than me but also shared hardships with me for three years. She even refused Brian in front of me multiple times. Even when Brian threatened her parents' jobs, she still stood firm. She only fell because her desires were awakened."
Olivia asked curiously, "How were her desires awakened?"
James smiled bitterly. "Brian organized a school Christmas party raffle, and Donna and Jennifer won a luxury trip to Prosperia. I had no money, so I couldn't go. Jennifer didn't want to waste the spot and couldn't transfer it, so she went with Donna."
Olivia asked, "Did Brian go too?"
James replied, "No, he knew that if he went, Jennifer would see through his plan and come back to avoid misunderstanding."
James's expression was calm. "It was just her and Donna on the two-week trip to Prosperia. Brian covered all the expenses through the organizers. Helicopters, skydiving, yachts, sports cars, deep-sea diving, forest hunting, caviar, golden suites, Jennifer enjoyed it all. She lived in luxury every day, drinking $100 water and eating noodles made by five-star chefs. Everyone she saw was a celebrity, and even the waiters were handsome guys making thousands a month. In short, it was a lavish life."
He sighed softly. "After two weeks, she and Donna came back as beautiful as ever, but her mindset had changed."
Olivia hit the nail on the head. "She couldn't go back."
"Yes, she couldn't go back. Once you're used to sports cars and helicopters, you can't stand taking the subway or bus." James's face showed a hint of mockery. "After staying in a $15,000-a-night golden suite, you can't be content in a rental."
James added. "So when Brian appeared again, she chose him without hesitation. I didn't get angry or question her because I knew I couldn't give her that life. And if I had experienced such luxury, I might not have been able to stay true to myself either."
He smiled. "So I can only remind myself not to be greedy, or I might destroy myself."
Olivia's fingers brushed James's cheek. "I understand why you want to open a clinic."
James instinctively turned his head, forgetting Olivia was wearing a skirt.
A flash of red appeared in his sight, the lacy edge of her intimate wear.
James was stunned, his hands stopping.
Olivia, unaware of her wardrobe malfunction, teased James softly.
"If you divorce Mary, can I get in line to chase you?" She looked at James with a playful smile, waiting for his answer.
Noticing his fixed gaze, Olivia was momentarily stunned but didn't close her legs. Instead, she spread them wider.
James almost spat out his drink, awkwardly laughing as he stood up.
Olivia tapped James's head, scolding, "You little rascal."
James said, "I didn't do it on purpose, and besides, you were the one who spread them. So self-righteous."
Arguing about this was too awkward, so Olivia changed the topic. "Alright, my foot's fine now, I'll take you home."
James quickly nodded. "Okay, drive slowly."
He agreed, but his mind kept flashing back to that red glimpse.
As the Ferrari slowly drove away, a parked Cayenne across the street took out a phone and snapped a few photos of James and Olivia.
Joseph looked at the photos and sneered. "Heaven helps me."
