Chapter 9

After leaving the villa complex, James headed to the bus stop.

Addison's actions had left him feeling cold, but innocence no longer mattered to him. All he needed to do was get the 400,000 dollars back, and he could leave the Smith family behind.

However, he didn't go straight to SH Corporation; instead, he waited for the bus to the hospital.

He was worried about Sophia.

James had been waiting for less than five minutes when a red BMW pulled up beside him.

The window rolled down, revealing Mary's cool, beautiful face. "Where are you headed?"

James replied indifferently, "To the hospital."

Mary let out a long sigh and said, "Get in. I'll give you a ride."

"No need, we're not heading the same way." James refused without hesitation. "You should go to work."

He knew Mary realized the truth; otherwise, she wouldn't have thought to give him a lift. But since she hadn't even apologized, how could she let him go?

His experiences over the past year made him realize that baseless humility and compromise only lead to more disrespect.

Mary's lips twitched slightly, then she tried to remain calm and said, "I have plenty of time today. I can take you to the hospital."

She asked again, "Are you going to see Sophia?"

"That's right, "James replied, "Her condition is unstable. I don't think she's out of danger yet. I want to see if I can help."

Of course, he also wanted to thank Olivia for the ginseng fruit.

After eating it, James felt invigorated, as if he'd gained a few years of struggle.

"You can't even understand medical books; how could you help her?" Mary said.

She shook her head in disbelief but still said coldly, "Get in, let's go together."

James didn't say anything; he just stared at Mary, waiting for her to say sorry and he would compromise.

Mary commanded strongly, "Are you done? As a man, what's the point of being so petty?"

James still did not speak.

Mary said, "Take it or leave it. Who do you think you are?"

Seeing that James remained silent, Mary grew irritated. She had already been so pleasant; what more did James want?

She casually threw a paper bag at James and then drove off with a press of the accelerator.

James caught the paper bag and opened it to find a bag of milk and a basket of hamburgers.

His mind wandered slightly as if he had returned to the days when he was homeless on the streets...

At 9:00 a.m., James arrived at Rosewood City Hospital.

He bought a box of silver needles at medicine department, inquired around, and made his way to the fourth-floor ward.

As the elevator doors opened, he saw Mary carrying a bag of fruit.

She passed by James as if he were invisible.

Knowing her temper, James didn't bother with her and went straight to Sophia's room, just in time to see Olivia sitting on a bench in a daze.

Her beautiful face was one of despair as if she had lost a significant amount of weight overnight.

Although she was haggard, it did not detract from her beauty; her sorrowful eyes gave off a poignant charm.

Around her were a dozen well-dressed men and women, but no one made a sound.

The atmosphere was oppressive.

Seeing this, Mary subconsciously stopped, wondering how to comfort Olivia.

"Ms. Lee," James walked straight over and said, "How is Sophia doing?"

Olivia was slightly startled, lifted her head, and upon seeing James, she became excited and said, "My savior, you've come."

The billionaire businesswoman had no airs about her at that moment.

"Just call me James." James held her shoulder. "The title 'savior' is too heavy for me to bear."

"You saved Sophia; you are my savior." Olivia's gaze was adamant. "If you need my help in the future, just ask."

"Slapping you yesterday, I'm sorry."

The next second, she raised her hand to slap herself.

Decisive and swift.

James quickly caught her wrist and said, "Ms. Lee, I don't blame you. I understand you."

"If you feel guilty, wait until Sophia wakes up to repay me."

Holding her supple wrist, James momentarily forgot to let go.

"James, you really are a good person." Olivia didn't struggle, allowing James to hold on. "I will remember your kindness forever."

Seeing James holding Olivia's hand and her being so gentle towards him, Mary approached and coughed lightly.

James realized what he was doing and quickly let go of her hand.

Olivia looked up at Mary with a gentle smile, saying, "Ms. Smith, thank you for organizing everyone to help yesterday."

Mary replied softly, "Ms. Lee, you're too kind."

"How is Sophia's condition?"

James smiled and asked, "Has she passed the critical period?"

"It's not looking good," Olivia's eyes dimmed, and she replied, "Her injuries are too severe. She was resuscitated several times yesterday, but she still hasn't passed the critical period."

"Even Mr. Anderson is struggling to turn the situation around."

Her lips quivered slightly, showing her distress.

James comforted her softly. "Don't worry, Sophia has good fortune; she'll be fine."

Suddenly, Olivia's eyes brightened. She said, "James since you could save Sophia yesterday, your medical skills must be extraordinary. Could you take a look at her?"

She was at her wit's end.

"I'm Sorry, Ms. Lee. James doesn't know medicine at all; it was just good luck yesterday," Mary said.

She had to tell the truth, and although she also hoped James could save Sophia, it was impossible.

"Ms. Lee, she's right. I'm not a doctor," James honestly replied, "I've never treated anyone before."

Hearing this, Olivia was taken aback. Her eyes filled with pain, and her beautiful face suddenly became sorrowful.

Sophia might have been adopted, but after raising her for seven years, she was no different from her daughter. If she had to bury her, Olivia would not want to live either.

"Ms. Lee, although I've never studied medicine, I've read quite a few medical books." James changed his tone. "If you trust me, I'm willing to try."

"Of course, I trust you." Olivia's eyes lit up again, and for some reason, she had an inexplicable trust in James.

"James, come with me." Olivia decisively pulled James towards the ward.

"James!" Mary watched James anxiously and shouted, "Don't mess around; you could kill someone."

James smiled faintly and said, "Don't worry, I can definitely save Sophia."

Mary stomped her foot in frustration, shouting, "What peace can I have? Recklessness can lead to disaster!"

She thought, 'Luck won't always be on James's side.'

"Are you just being spiteful towards me? Angry that I refused to apologize?" Mary asked.

She suddenly remembered something and said, "Fine, I apologize now. I was reckless this morning; Mom shouldn't have swayed me to frame you."

"If venting makes you feel rational, I'll let you slap me back for the one I gave you."

She thought James's attempt to treat Sophia was to spite her.

James replied softly, "You've never believed in me..."

"Trouble! The patient's breathing has stopped; hurry..."

Just then, alarms blared from the intensive care unit, and a dozen doctors rushed over.

Among them were not only the hospital's specialists but also many Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners invited by Olivia for consultation.

Leading the charge was a spirited man in his sixties with white hair, exuding an air of luxury.

The Miracle Doctor of Rosewood City, Mark, was the founder of HC TCM Clinic in Rosewood City and had a prominent reputation in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. With over forty years of medical practice and numerous honors, he dedicated half his life to Traditional Chinese Medicine and was well respected in Rosewood City.

With the patient in crisis, he was the quickest to respond.

Olivia and James followed close behind.

Sophia had stopped breathing, and the alarms from various machines were nerve-wracking.

The attending physician was nervously administering adrenaline and using a defibrillator in a full-force resuscitation attempt.

However, Sophia's condition was dire, and there was almost no response.

"Sophia!" Olivia was on the verge of crying.

As the electrocardiogram slowly flattened into a straight line, the faces of the attending physician and others showed resignation.

"Let me!" At that moment, Mark stepped forward, asking the other doctors to step aside.

He pinched six silver needles between his fingers and swiftly inserted them into Sophia's body, hoping to gather the last vestige of vitality.

The resuscitations from the previous night and this morning had all been Mark's work.

Unfortunately, there was no response from Sophia this time.

Mark sighed again.

He stopped.

It was beyond his power.

Seeing Mark shake his head, the ward was filled with sorrow, and Olivia's face turned pale.

James stepped out from the crowd and said, "Let me do it!"
