Chapter 313 She Belongs to Me

Seeing Samantha's delicate expression but firm tone, along with her resolute little hand covering the bottle, made James feel a strange warmth in his heart.

Seeing James fall silent, Samantha panicked a bit but still spoke timidly, "Drin... drinking before driving is... is dangerous."

Although she didn't dare to look James in the eye, her small hand remained firmly over the bottle.

"Alright, I won't drink," James handed the chilled beer to a nearby customer and then looked at Samantha with a gentle smile. "But you have to have some porridge with me."

Samantha nodded with her lips pressed together, "Okay!"

The food was served quickly, filling the table.

Samantha took a light sniff but didn't eat, just sat obediently in her chair.

James served Samantha a bowl of porridge and then picked up a spoon, inviting her to eat, "Come on, have some. What are you waiting for?"

Samantha hesitated for a moment but finally didn't pick up the spoon.

"If you don't eat, I'll feed you myself," James put on a stern face. "You've been busy all night, and I ate your bread. You must be starving. Hurry up and eat."

Hearing that James would feed her and seeing his roguish look, Samantha was startled and reluctantly picked up the spoon to take a few bites.

The warm food softened Samantha's delicate face and made her curiously glance at James.

She was a bit puzzled; why had the kind Dr. Williams from the afternoon suddenly become so stern?

"Come on, you have to finish all the food tonight." James directly ordered Samantha and then swiftly divided the food, leaving only twelve pieces of bread untouched.

Samantha seemed afraid of James's domineering attitude. She picked up the spoon to drink the porridge but noticed that James's spoon had a chip. She reached over.

She swapped their spoons to prevent James from cutting his mouth while drinking the porridge.

She was very cautious, occasionally sneaking glances at James, seemingly worried he would scold her again.

James felt helpless. His lips opened and closed several times but was afraid of scaring her, so he let her serve him.

"Check please, and pack the bread for me!" James waved his hand and said.

An hour later, after finishing the meal, James handed the bill to Samantha, "How much is it?"

Samantha softly said, "Twenty dollars in total."

James was slightly taken aback.

Almost simultaneously, the boss came over with a food box, smiling, "Twenty dollars in total."

"Dr. Williams, this meal is on me." Samantha quickly handed the money to the boss.

She mustered the courage to say to James, "You... you saved me and took me home. I should treat you. And this is the consultation fee I owe you. Please take it."

After saying, she placed two dollars in front of James. "I know the consultation fee is definitely more than twenty dollars. It can't be less than a few thousand dollars. But I don't have that much money right now. I'll pay you back after I earn more."

She looked at James timidly, "Please take this money first."

James looked at her, "You earn little yet treat me to a meal; how can you afford your life then?"

Samantha blushed and explained, "I made twenty pieces of bread last week. There are still six left at home, enough for two days."

"You eat only three pieces of bread a day?" James almost pinched her cheek, "You're already severely anemic. If you keep eating like this, you'll probably collapse on the street one day."

Samantha avoided James's gaze and didn't speak.

James calmed himself, realizing he had gotten too emotional. If Samantha had any other way, she wouldn't be living like this. She must really have no other options.

He thought of himself a few months ago, not much better off than Samantha. At his poorest, he had only twenty dollars left and had to beg .

The only difference was that Mary helped him and he could eat his fill at the Smith Family.

James let out a long breath. "Alright, I'm sorry. I was too harsh just now."

Samantha lowered her eyes. "It's okay."

James picked up his car keys, ready to leave.

Samantha hesitated and handed over the two dollars.

James didn't take them but said, "Hand them to Nathaniel the day after tomorrow. He's in charge of collecting the consultation fees."

Feeling too sorry for her, James got inexplicably angry, grabbed the bag of bread, and stood up, "Let's go. I'll take you home."

Seeing James's stern face, Samantha didn't dare to say anything, holding the two dollars and following James to the car with her head down.

Sitting in the car, she felt wronged and thought to herself, 'It's fine to take me home, but don't be so fierce.'

The car quickly left the restaurant. James turned the steering wheel, driving fast along the riverside road.

As he drove, he glanced at the rearview mirror a few times, vaguely noticing several cars taking turns following them.

Although they kept changing, James still caught them.

He squinted slightly, wondering if Bryan had found him.

James sent a text message to Francis, then sped up and drove into the slums, making several sharp turns to shake off all the tailing cars.

Finally, James drove into the alley where Samantha rented a place.

Samantha also lived in the White Rock slums, but her place was just a damp and dark storage room converted into a living space, which was far worse than Michelle's.

Even so, it cost eighty dollars a month.

James didn't go in. He knew he had to give Samantha some dignity. A girl wouldn't want others to see her most embarrassing living conditions.

As Samantha was about to enter her room, James called out, "Wait!"

Samantha's body trembled slightly, and she turned to look at James.

"Here's forty dollars, considered an advance on your salary. Remember to report the day after tomorrow. If you dare to breach the contract, you'll owe me four thousand dollars," James searched his entire body and car, barely gathering forty dollars to hand over. "And, I have a meeting later. It's inconvenient to bring this bread. You keep it. Don't refuse, it makes me annoyed."

He then handed over the bag of bread.

Seeing James's stern face, Samantha swallowed her refusal, took the money and bread, and turned to go inside with a red face.

After watching Samantha leave, James also turned and walked out of the alley, signaling Francis to protect Samantha secretly.

Just as James reached the alley entrance, three Mercedes blocked his way, exuding a sense of danger.

Then, a Rolls-Royce drove up.

The car door opened, and a dozen men got out, forming a semicircle and silently blocking James's path.

They were all dressed in black, with their hands straight, clearly hiding weapons in their sleeves, their eyes glinting coldly.

Immediately after, Debra appeared and Patricia stood in front of James.

Patricia looked at James, then at the end of the alley, and said in a low voice. "She's my target!"

James's eyes turned cold. "Dream on! She's mine!"

In the deep night, a suffocating silence suddenly fell.
