Chapter 119 Please Let Me Go

"Accusation?"

Addison's voice deepened as he shouted, "We haven't even held them accountable yet. What are they accusing us of?"

Emily was also indignant. "Exactly, my brother hurt someone in order to save others. You called that a crime? We haven't even brought up the incompetence of your police force, and now you're targeting a hero. Is there no justice in the world? We will definitely complain to the higher-ups, accusing you of incompetence, shamelessness, and dereliction of duty."

She kept poking her finger at Phillip's chest, posing as if she was ready to give the police a piece of her mind.

"You have the right to file a complaint."

"The law will severely punish the case of Jesse drugging Mrs Smith."

Phillip's tone grew heavier. "But Jesse and Lyla were stabbed nine times by Joseph, and it was done publicly, which constitutes intentional harm."

"They are now filing a complaint, and we need to investigate according to the law."

"So please do not obstruct our law enforcement."

Phillip was not at all intimidated by Emily's momentum. "If you have any objections, you can report them to the complaints department."

Emily's voice trembled. "Jesse and his gang act recklessly, and they dare to lodge a complaint?"

Phillip remained polite. "That's their right."

Joseph looked at Phillip with a playful gaze. "Have you figured out the stabbing incident?"

He felt targeted by the police. Logically, Phillip and the others must know that he wasn't the one who stabbed them. After all, Jesse had never even seen him.

But he couldn't figure out who had such power to make the police ignore the obvious clues and brazenly treat him as the suspect.

Joseph thought, 'Could it be James?'

This thought flashed through Joseph's mind but was quickly dismissed. James couldn't possibly sway the police.

At this moment, Phillip stared at him intently. "We haven't figured it out yet, which is why we need you to cooperate with the investigation, Mr. Wilson Mrs. Smith's statement and Isabella's testimony both clearly identify you as the one who rushed into Vocal Vista and stabbed Jesse and Lyla."

Phillip looked at Joseph. "We hope you will assist us in solving the case."

"Joseph, go ahead. We will all testify for you, saying you stabbed someone to save Mary."

"Yes, even if it was excessive self-defense, it was an emergency and can be understood."

"Just nine stabs. If it were me, I might have had the urge to stab ten times."

"Isabella will also testify for you, explaining that you had no choice but to stab someone."

"Don't worry. We will get you the best lawyer to try to keep you out of jail. Even if you do go to jail, The Smith family will remember your good deed."

Mr. and Mrs. Charles comforted Joseph one after another, making him feel increasingly hot all over. This pushed him into the role of the culprit.

"Shut up, shut up!"

Emily shouted at the two of them, then looked at Phillip with twitching eyelids.

"Officer, if this charge sticks, will he go to jail?"

"Illegal possession of a weapon, public assault, cruel methods, severe impact." Phillip's tone was flat. "I don't know the exact sentence, but three years of imprisonment is unavoidable."

Upon hearing a sentence of three years, Emily was instantly dumbfounded.

"Take him away."

Phillip ordered.

Three officers handcuffed Joseph and pushed him towards the door.

"Sir, this is a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding." Emily snapped out of it, terrified, and rushed forward, shouting, "It wasn't Joseph who did the stabbing that night."

Charles was stunned. "Wasn't it Joseph who saved the person?"

"No, no."

Emily desperately pulled at the police officers.

"It wasn't Joseph. It was James. It was James who did the stabbing. Isabella, Isabella, quickly tell the police it was James who hurt people. You gave a false testimony."

"Hurry, hurry, Joseph must not go to jail."

Isabella was crying bitterly, unable to answer anything. She suddenly realized that she seemed to have lost something.

James's value was far more than the three hundred thousand dollars in hush money she had in her handbag.

James?

Seeing Isabella's regretful look, Mary shivered, her face full of regret as she rushed out of the hospital room.

At the hospital entrance, Mary saw James's figure at a glance. He looked down and out, lonely, and there was a touch of sadness.

Ignoring the gaze of others, she ran up in her slippers and grabbed his sleeve just as he was getting into a taxi.

Mary said, "James, James, it was my fault. I was deceived."

"I shouldn't have doubted you, but I really didn't expect that it was you who rushed into Vocal Vista to save me that night."

Even Mary herself doubted how convincing this feeble explanation could be.

James didn't respond, just shook off Mary's hand and continued towards the taxi.

People were coming and going, countless curious eyes watching them.

Mary explained, "I know you're upset. It's frustrating to be wrongly blamed. But it's not all my fault; I was barely conscious at that time; I couldn't tell who saved me, and Isabella also said it was Joseph who saved me."

Mary's mind was blank as she stumbled to catch up and grab James.

James still didn't respond and once again shook off Mary's hand.

Mary's face couldn't hold it anymore, her voice losing control and becoming sharp.

"James, what do you want? I know the truth now. I don't blame you anymore. What more do you want? Besides, when I got into trouble, you were also responsible. If you hadn't defrauded Joseph of fifteen million dollars, I wouldn't have gone drinking with Jesse."

James stopped, turned around, and looked at Mary. "I thought that once you knew the truth, at least you would say sorry. But as always, you refuse to admit your mistakes, you run over here, and all you do is absolve yourself of responsibility. It's either Joseph deceiving you or Isabella lying to you. You even push the blame onto fraud. And from beginning to end, you're just an innocent little bunny. The only thing you blame yourself for is not being able to discern things clearly after being drugged."

A hint of mockery appeared on James's face. "Everyone else is at fault. Only you did nothing wrong, even if you falsely accused me, even if you hit me."

Mary's expression was dazed, speechless. James sighed, "Mary, do you know what your biggest problem is?"

Mary staggered, grabbing James' wrist, "What is it?"

"Your biggest problem is that you don't have me in your heart, so you never trust me. Even if you see me doing something with your own eyes, you instinctively doubt it."

"You had many ways to find out the truth of this Vocal Vista incident, but you chose to believe Joseph."

"Because in your heart, Joseph is more reliable than me."

James mocked himself. "I have always been someone who sold himself out for seventy thousand dollars."

Mary shook her head repeatedly, "It's not like that. It's not like that."

James looked closely at the face that had once filled his dreams and accompanied countless of his fantasies.

James said, "Mary, let's get a divorce. Let me go, and let yourself go, too."

James reached out and touched Mary's face. "Let me keep the last bit of good memories of you."

Hearing these words, Mary felt as if she had been struck by lightning, lost and disoriented.

James broke free from her hand and got into the taxi.

"No." She reached out but grabbed nothing, stumbling and unable to stand steadily, shouting at the taxi, "James, are you trying to drive me crazy?"

She suddenly couldn't tell if her reluctance to divorce was for her pride or if she truly couldn't let go.
