Chapter 123 When Adversaries Once Crossed Paths

Upon hearing news about Virgil, James rushed to Harmony Care Hospital in less than half an hour.

Harmony Care Hospital is a private hospital, not very large but luxuriously decorated, with complete departments. Its advertisements were everywhere, from streets and alleys to buses.

It may not be a top-notch medical facility, but its reputation in Rosewood City was extremely high. Even someone like James, who seldom watched the news, had been brainwashed by its ads.

James walked through the bustling lobby and headed to the emergency room corridor inside. Without needing to search, he immediately spotted Mary.

Mary was wearing a dress with light makeup, yet her charm was undiminished.

It had only been a few days since their last meeting, but Mary had lost a lot of weight, and her pretty face looked somewhat worn.

At this moment, she was holding a payment receipt, pacing back and forth at the emergency room entrance.

Mary called out, "James!"

Mary's face froze slightly when she saw James appear. She wanted to say something but ended up just greeting him.

Her feelings were very complicated at this moment, filled with guilt towards James and disappointment in him. Olivia's kiss had left her furious to this day.

Even if they had no future together, she hoped that they could both remain faithful during their marriage.

James asked, "What happened to my dad?"

James was also filled with mixed emotions and somewhat reluctant to see Mary, but he couldn't care less now. He grabbed Mary and urgently asked, "Where did you find him?"

He had been searching for Virgil for a whole year with no results, so he was very surprised that Virgil appeared in Rosewood City and was found by Mary.

Mary's eyelids twitched. "I went to the dock to check inventory today. On my way back, I passed the unloading area, and suddenly someone rushed out."

"He was dirty and had bloodstains all over him. He slapped the car hood and then collapsed."

"At first, I thought it was an insurance scam, so I called the police while checking on him. Then I realized it was your dad, Virgil."

James was somewhat surprised. "How do you know my father?"

In his memory, Mary had never met Virgil. He became a live-in son-in-law after Virgil disappeared.

Mary replied, "I recognized your dad from a photo of the three of you on the wall when I went to your mom's rental place for dinner last time."

Mary sighed softly. "The scar behind his ear left a deep impression on me."

"So I brought him to the hospital. Seeing that his condition was serious, I called you."

Mary was also reluctant to call James. She had called him dozens of times in the past few days, and he hadn't answered a single one, which made her somewhat upset.

But she knew that calling Michelle would easily scare her, so she ultimately contacted James.

"He's injured again." James looked very anxious. "I wonder if his life is in danger."

He felt very guilty. It was understandable that his parents hid things from him when he was young, but it was inconsiderate of him not to notice anything unusual about Virgil after turning eighteen.

If only he hadn't been so focused on Jennifer during those years.

"Don't worry, his injuries aren't severe. He shouldn't be in any danger." Seeing James restless, Mary gently comforted him. "When I brought him to the hospital, he was still breathing steadily."

She reminded him. "Do you want to call your mom?"

James shook his head. "No rush, let's wait until my dad's condition stabilizes. Otherwise, she'll be too overwhelmed."

He was afraid of giving his mother hope only to disappoint her again, which she couldn't bear.

Mary nodded lightly. "It's up to you."

James hesitated before speaking, "Thank you."

Their relationship was at a low point, but he appreciated Mary for rescuing Virgil.

If it had been someone else, they might have mistaken Virgil for a beggar or an insurance scam.

Mary sighed faintly, "It's good that you're here. I have something to do, so I'll go first."

"Why is there no one in the emergency room?" Before Mary could finish, James glanced through the window of the emergency room, "Aren't the doctors supposed to be saving people?"

His eyes were very sharp. He noticed that in the room, separated by five or six blue curtains, three or four emergency patients lay on the beds, but there wasn't a single medical staff member in sight.

"When I brought your father here, the doctors were gathering for a photo."

Mary was slightly taken aback. "Even the emergency room staff went over. They told me that they would be back soon and it wouldn't delay the rescue of the patients."

"They also reminded me to first pay a deposit of fifteen thousand dollars."

"I took over ten minutes to pay. I thought they would have returned to the emergency room now."

She also looked through the small window and found the emergency room indeed to be as quiet as a church.

James couldn't help but curse, "Isn't this nonsense?"

"Don't get angry. I'll go call them again."

Mary, worried that James might smash up the emergency room, quickly grabbed his arm to calm him down, then ran to the main hall to find the doctors.

Not long after, Mary ran back. "They're coming."

Seeing Mary running around, James's irritated heart calmed down a bit. "Mary, thank you."

Mary gently shook her head. "I'm not trying to please you. I just hope your father is okay."

James nodded. He knew that although their relationship had somewhat improved because of Virgil, the deep-seated barriers between them hadn't disappeared.

After waiting for another three minutes, the doctor still hadn't arrived. Before James could take action, Mary ran to the lobby again.

She ran back and forth five times. Each time, the medical staff said they would come right away, but it took half an hour for a female doctor and three young nurses to arrive.

The name tag on the female doctor's chest read Harmony Carter.

James recognized her at a glance. She was the seductive woman at the scene of Gabriella's car accident, the girlfriend of the hook-nosed perpetrator.

What a small world.

"What's the rush?"

Harmony didn't recognize James. She walked slowly towards the emergency room, shouting impatiently at Mary, "What's wrong with you? Didn't you see we were taking a group photo? Do you know how much trouble you've caused us?"

The pretty young nurses also looked at Mary with annoyance.

Mary's pretty face became serious. "The patient's condition is critical. Instead of saving lives, you all went to take a group photo. Where is your medical ethics?"

Harmony shouted, "No matter how big the issue, it has to wait until we finish taking the photo. I'm telling you, we're going back to continue taking photos. If you're not happy, take your patient and leave."

Harmony snapped sharply. "I don't care if the patients are in danger."

Mary was furious. "I'm going to file a complaint against you."

A complaint?

The nurses laughed mockingly, looking at their clear nail polish with indifference as if Mary's complaint was childish and ridiculous.

Didn't she know they didn't give a shit to complaints?

"Feel free to lodge your complaint." Harmony retorted with a dismissive snort. "Call whomever you want - the Department of Commerce, the Medical Bureau, the Police Department. If anyone you summon can intimidate us, then I'll bow my head to you."

James didn't tolerate her behavior and slapped her directly.

Harmony screamed and fell to the ground.
