Chapter 217 Intrusion
Before it got dark, James bailed from the Miller family crib.
Brandon didn't wrap up Charles's tale, but James could see that Charles, who once had it all, had hit rock bottom.
The project delays and stoppages totally screwed with progress, cash flow, and team spirit. The whole "will we, won't we" about restarting the project just made everything worse for everyone.
But the real kicker? Finding all those coffins. Dragon tomb or not, it freaked out the big shots of Rosewood City.
No matter what went down with Cloud Top Mountain, the elites of Rosewood City weren't gonna buy homes there, thinking it was bad juju.
So, the two billion bucks? Pretty much down the drain, and Charles would be benched in the Smith Family.
Anyone who blew through two billion dollars would probably get booted from the family's inner circle.
Charles went from paradise to hell, losing not just his status and glory, but also his spirit and vitality. No wonder he ended up like this.
Thinking of Charles, who once fought for General Jade, and then managing the billion-dollar Cloud Top Mountain, James couldn't help but shake his head.
Fate's got a twisted sense of humor.
Then he frowned, wondering about the current state of the Smith Family and whether Brandon and the others were still stirring the pot.
While James was lost in thought, Mary was heading back to the Smith Family villa from work.
Charles and Kaitlyn had gone to the hospital to visit Christopher and his wife, so the big house felt really empty with just Mary there.
The dining table was even more desolate, with no warmth at all.
A trace of sadness flashed in her eyes as she remembered that when James was still with the Smith Family, no matter when she came home, there were always lights on and someone there.
And there was always hot food.
But now, there was nothing.
James probably would never return to the Smith Family. Thinking of James's determination and Olivia's agreement, Mary felt a pang of sorrow.
She then shook her head, tossing her car keys and bag onto the sofa.
At that moment, several car headlights shone from the entrance, glaringly bright, instantly overshadowing the villa's chandelier, causing Mary to squint slightly.
Then, the sensor door was forcefully pushed open, and several Audis roared in, all stopping beside the steps.
The car doors opened, and seven or eight young men and women got out. Behind them were two strong men, each about 6'6" with solid muscles.
Leading them was Sophie, dressed in black.
She led the group straight into the Smith Family villa.
Mary stepped forward and shouted, "Who are you people? How dare you barge into our house?"
Sophie didn't respond. With a wave of her hand, several bodyguards and the musclemen immediately spread out, kicking open every room to search for people.
Soon, they returned to the hall, shaking their heads.
Mary was furious. "What are you doing? Barging into our house and kicking doors? Who gave you the right?"
"You're Mary, right?" Sophie glanced at Mary, then her pretty face darkened. "Get on the phone, call James, and tell him to come to the Smith Family."
Mary instinctively asked, "Who are you people? What do you want with James?"
"Who we are is none of your concern." Sophie stared at Mary with contempt. "What you need to do now is call James and tell him to come here immediately."
"Sorry, I divorced James," Mary said bluntly. "I don't know where he is, and I won't call him."
"If you got business with him, go find him yourself. Don't come here and act all crazy."
Mary wasn't just annoyed by Sophie's attitude; she also sensed some serious bad vibes and worried that calling James might put him in danger.
"I couldn't find him at White Rock, and I missed him at the clinic, so I had to come to you, his ex-wife, to get him." Sophie shot Mary a cold look and snorted, "You better call him right now and not piss us off."
She already knew James listened to two people—Michelle and Mary.
Unable to track down James for now, she had to try Mary; otherwise, the muscle she brought would be wasted.
"Don't you get what I'm saying?"
Mary's face turned icy. "This is the Smith Family. You're not welcome here. Get out."
Before she could finish, Sophie slapped Mary hard.
Mary groaned and stumbled back, her cheek marked with five red fingerprints.
Sophie sneered, "Who do you think you are to challenge me? Kneel down! Tell James to come back immediately."
Sophie stared at Mary with oppressive eyes. "You can get up when he arrives."
Mary covered her face and shouted, "Don't push me too far. This is my home. You have no right to act like this here. I'm calling the cops to report your illegal entry and assault."
She reached for her phone.
Sophie was livid. "Looks like you need a lesson to understand who I am."
At her words, several female companions surrounded Mary, knocking the phone out of her hand.
"What are you doing?" Mary struggled but was quickly overpowered.
Some grabbed her hands, some her hair, and some her neck, pinning Mary down in no time.
Then, they pressed Mary onto the sofa, immobilizing her.
Several girls even pressed down on Mary, tying her hands behind her back with a thin rope, making it look like they were dealing with a criminal.
Mary couldn't break free and could only shout angrily, "You are lawless."
A girl with bangs walked up to Mary and shouted, "Kneel down."
Mary raised her head. "I won't."
The girl with bangs slapped Mary twice. "Kneel down!"
Mary endured the pain and shouted, "I won't."
The girl with bangs sneered, grabbed Mary's hair, and pressed her head down while raising her knee to hit her hard.
Mary felt a sharp pain in her abdomen, her strength fading.
At the same time, two other girls kicked the back of Mary's knees.
Mary lost her balance and knelt on the ground.
She had a rebellious temper, but against sheer strength, how could she compete with these people?
Sophie sneered, looking down at Mary and said, "Aren't you tough? Now you're kneeling."
The girl with bangs and her companions looked at Mary with schadenfreude, thinking she was too unwise.
Mary was furious. "I can even bow to you three times."
"Still stubborn." Sophie tilted her head slightly, and the boxer stepped forward, kicking Mary down.
"Everyone, beat her."
At Sophie's command, the girl with bangs and her companions immediately went over and took turns slapping Mary's face.
They hit her hard and with excitement, finding it satisfying to mistreat a woman prettier than themselves.
Mary's hands were tied, and she could only let them slap her face one after another.
Mary was in great pain and anger but gritted her teeth, maintaining her last bit of dignity.
Before long, Mary became dazed and collapsed to the ground.
