Chapter 310 The Lee Family's Enemy
After Samantha rushed off to her part-time job, James was also dragged by Mary to Peach Blossom Villa No. 1 for dinner.
Mary claimed that it was Melissa who wanted to thank him for treating Samantha, and she had specially prepared a few good dishes. James had no choice but to go for the meal.
As soon as James and Mary entered the house, they heard Addison shouting towards the kitchen:
"Why did you buy so many groceries and fruits today? It's clearly over the $30 budget I set for you. I'm telling you, the extra money will be deducted from your salary," Addison shouted righteously at the busy Melissa. "The Smith Family may be rich, but that doesn't mean we can waste money."
Melissa didn't respond, just kept washing, cutting, and cooking the vegetables.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Mary frowned and shouted, "I told Melissa to buy them. There are three extra people for dinner tonight, and Kaitlyn will be back later. How can we not buy more?"
She added, "I'll cover today's grocery expenses."
"Oh dear, you're back? Was it tiring? What grocery expenses? Forget it!" Seeing James and Mary, Addison immediately turned around, smiling and welcoming them, linking arms with Mary. "You're off work so early today? It seems the crisis is really over. Your dad was worried you wouldn't make it as CEO. But I told him, when has my daughter Addison ever lost to anyone? Jane may have strong backing, but my daughter is even more capable. Those directors and shareholders wouldn't be blind. And I was right; my daughter won again. Hearing that you're the CEO puts my mind at ease. We won't have to dip into our savings this year. I couldn't sleep for two days because of the $300,000 loss from Emerald Country. It made me so nervous, I even felt like dying!"
As she lamented her hardships, she glanced at James out of the corner of her eye, seemingly hinting for him to return the discounted $300,000.
James pretended not to hear, taking a sip of the tea Charles had poured.
"James, you heartless man, give me back my $300,000!" Seeing James feign ignorance, Addison directly said, "You're with Mary now, so I'm your mom. You have no reason to take advantage of me!"
"Mom, enough. Can you be reasonable?" Mary frowned, "James has helped you a lot, and you're still asking him for the money? Do you want to return the property deeds and get back the $3.22 million you owe him? And also, find time to transfer the Smith Family villa and CF Clinic. If you don't go, Kaitlyn and I will. I remember the clinic and villa are under my and Kaitlyn's names."
Addison's face changed, and she cursed, "Oh my God, how did I give birth to such an unfilial daughter? You're talking back to your mom for an outsider? Robbing your mom of her retirement money? Why, dear, why are you doing so? Are you so considerate of him that you've forgotten you're a Smith?"
She glared at James and shouted, "James, how did you bewitch my daughter to make her so infatuated with you?"
James finished his tea in one gulp, ignoring Addison, and got up to head to the kitchen. "I'll go help Melissa."
Addison was furious, "Jerk! Bewitching my daughter and still daring to show attitude?"
"Shut up! You're so heartless, mom! He's your son-in-law, and he helped you a lot. Why do you always treat him so toughly?" Mary was almost infuriated, "Let me tell you, the only reason I can continue as CEO is because of James. It was him who gave me orders and loans, which changed the attitude of the shareholders and board, preventing me from being ousted and Jane from taking over. And Kaitlyn was able to land the Bashful Flower endorsement because James arranged it through his connections. Otherwise, who would hire a newcomer? So think carefully about how you treat him. Without James's strong support, the Smith Family would be finished!"
She left a final remark and picked up her phone to call Kaitlyn.
Hearing Mary's words, Addison's mouth slightly opened, then she snorted, "Bullshit! No matter what, everyone should listen to me in this house! I haven't even bothered him about Reese and her son being arrested."
She then thought about hiding the property deeds for the Smith Family villa and CF Clinic to prevent Mary and her sister from transferring them to James.
"Dr. Williams, thank you for saving Samantha. She said she feels much better now," While Addison was scheming, in the kitchen, Melissa was profusely thanking James. "If it weren't for you, I was afraid she wouldn't make it through this year."
After that, she bowed again, "Thank you."
"Melissa, it is just a small effort. No need to be so polite. Samantha's condition is something I'm familiar with, so my treatment is more effective than other hospitals'," James reassured Melissa, "Don't worry, I'll definitely cure her."
"Alright, you go ahead and treat her. Let me know the cost, and I'll definitely pay you back," Melissa's eyes were firm. "She's my only relative left. I can't let anything happen to her."
"I'll do my best," James smiled, then changed the subject, "Besides you, does Samantha have any other close people?"
Melissa thought for a moment and shook her head, "She's an orphan. Her parents died in a cliff fall while collecting herbs over a decade ago. Her grandparents also passed away from grief. She grew up with the support of the villagers and me. She doesn't have any close blood relatives, and even I'm distantly related to her. She's kind-hearted and simple, but a bit timid and reclusive. Growing up in the mountains, she hardly has any friends. Even at school, she rarely interacted with teachers and classmates. Because she was so poor, she felt she couldn't afford to make friends. She wouldn't know how to repay even a single ice cream. So over the years, she mostly buried herself in her studies and helped villagers dry herbs to earn some money."
Melissa looked at James with a bitter smile, "She's had a hard life."
James nodded slightly, seeing that Samantha had indeed had a tough time.
"Oh, right, I just remembered," Melissa suddenly recalled something and slapped her forehead. "She has an aunt that is also from Hidden Creek, she is quite prominent, even served as the clan leader. But many years ago, she had a conflict with a powerful group, and her village was destroyed. Thousands were displaced, and her family was ruined. Her aunt rarely visited her before, but about seven years ago, she started visiting almost every year, giving her a few dozen dollars."
Melissa gossiped, "Her aunt is also quite strange, always covering her head. I heard her son has been in a coma for many years."
James squinted slightly,' Could Samantha's Nine Netherworld Fire Lotus be related to that cousin?'
James asked, "What's her aunt's name?"
"Molly," Melissa replied.
James was stunned. Wasn't that Trevor's enemy?
