Chapter 335 Narrow Road for Enemies
At 1 a.m., James followed Charles and his family to the funeral home, where the police had set up an autopsy room.
When James and Mary arrived, they saw a bunch of police cars and luxury vehicles parked outside the building.
The funeral home, which should have been quiet, was now bustling with activity, with people coming and going.
Clearly, they were all here for the Eagle Lady incident.
James and the others were led to the room where the bodies were kept, finding it crowded both inside and out.
Not only had dozens of members of the Smith Family arrived, but Amanda and Jane were also present.
Amanda, leaning on her dragon-headed cane, looked at the lifeless bodies of the Eagle Lady and her companions with a face full of anger and sorrow.
The Eagle Lady had been with her for decades. Though she was just a maid, their bond was as strong as that of sisters. Her sudden death was a devastating blow.
Jane, sitting in a wheelchair, wiped away tears, her grief appearing somewhat theatrical.
James glanced at the Smith Family members before turning his attention to the deceased Eagle Lady.
Her face was swollen, her right hand twisted, and her expression still one of anger, much like when she had left in a hurry.
The only difference was the fatal wound in her throat.
It wasn't deep, but it was enough to kill.
There were similar wounds on the other women's bodies.
Undeniably, the attacker was powerful, overpowering the Eagle Lady and her companions without giving them a chance to fight back.
"How could this happen?" Amanda cried, gently touching the Eagle Lady's lifeless eyes. "Why did you ?"
"Grandma, don't be too sad. The Eagle Lady wouldn't want to see you like this," Jane said, wiping her tears and trying to comfort Amanda. She then glanced at Charles and his family.
She continued, "Finding peace is the best way to honor the Eagle Lady."
"And she wouldn't want us to just mourn. She'd want us to find the killer and get revenge. This isn't just about their lives; it's about our honor."
Jane gripped Amanda's hand tightly. "Grandma, we must avenge the Eagle Lady and the others. They died so horribly."
"It's all my fault. If I weren't so incompetent, the Eagle Lady wouldn't have had to seek justice." Jane began to wail again. "Eagle Lady, I caused your death."
"Is Charles here yet?" Amanda suddenly banged her cane on the floor and shouted, "Get them over here!"
Her wrath rose so intensely, it seemed to swallow everyone, scaring Kaitlyn into James's arms.
James gently patted Kaitlyn, signaling her not to worry.
Hearing Amanda's angry shout, Charles and Mary hurried forward.
Addison also approached. "Mom, we didn't kill them."
Amanda didn't say a word. She swung her cane and started hitting Charles and Addison.
"If it weren't for your schemes, the contract wouldn't have had issues, and Jane would have smoothly become the CEO."
"If Jane had taken over smoothly, there wouldn't have been so many problems."
"If you had come back to resolve the contract, I wouldn't have sent the Eagle Lady to break Mary's leg."
"If the Eagle Lady hadn't gone to your house, she wouldn't have met with such disaster."
"You didn't kill them, but you're responsible for the their deaths."
"I'll beat you to death and make you join them in the afterlife!"
Amanda cursed and beat them, quickly knocking Charles and Addison to the ground, leaving Charles with a bleeding head.
"Dad! Mom!"
"Charles! Addison!"
"Grandma, why are you hitting them?"
Mary and Kaitlyn couldn't help but rush to protect them. No matter how strange Addison was, they were still their parents.
"Die! All of you, die!" Amanda, even angrier, raised her cane to hit Mary on the head.
But before the cane could touch Mary, James caught it with one hand.
"This is a society governed by law, not a place for you to act recklessly." James threw the cane aside. "And I won't let you hurt Mary."
"Well, well, you useless piece of trash, looking for attention again?" Amanda looked at James, her anger turning into a cold smile.
"First, you broke my $2 million cane at the airport, then you injured Jane and Gregory, and finally, you tampered with the contract."
"Now you're directly opposing me."
"No wonder the Smith Family has so many problems; it's all because of you, you bastard."
Amanda's eyes grew colder as she turned to Charles. "Charles, how useless can you be to let an outsider run rampant? Your family doesn't deserve the Smith name."
Charles and Addison held their heads in silence.
"I believe you know the truth of all that you've said." James looked at Amanda without backing down. "If you want to distort the truth, I won't bother explaining."
"I can wake someone who's asleep, but not someone pretending to sleep, and certainly not someone biased."
Although Charles and Addison were problematic, Amanda's blatant favoritism was something James couldn't stand.
"James, you've repeatedly challenged my authority. Do you think I'm weak and easy to bully?" Amanda's face grew more wrinkled with anger, her resentment clear.
James's tone was indifferent. "I never meant that, but you can't hit Mary."
"James, this is the Smith Family's business. It's not your place to interfere." Jane was furious. "Gregory and I haven't even settled our scores with you."
Gregory was dead, yet she still wanted to settle scores.
James glanced at Jane, then spoke in a low voice, "No matter what, no one shall hurt Mary."
James stared at Amanda. "Not even you."
"Not even me?" Amanda laughed maniacally. "James, do you not realize that I'm someone you can't afford to provoke?"
"Guards, seize him." Amanda ordered.
Several Smith Clan bodyguards surrounded James, their expressions cold as they drew their guns.
"No!" Mary instinctively threw herself on James.
At that moment, three flying darts shot towards James's back, fast and deadly.
James dodged swiftly, rolling on the ground with Mary.
The flying darts hit three Smith Clan bodyguards.
Blood splattered.
The three men screamed and fell, their guns dropping from their hands.
Each had a poisoned dart in their chest.
Before Jane and the others could react, a crematorium worker quickly approached, swinging a weapon.
Light flashed, and several people blocking the way clutched their throats and fell.
The crematorium worker was about to attack James, but James sprang up, holding Mary and leaping away as he kicked Jane's wheelchair to block the worker.
The distance between them widened instantly.
"Who are you?" Amanda instinctively shouted.
The crematorium worker leaped back several feet and approached Amanda instantly, raising a dagger to Amanda's throat.
A wave of deathly fear silenced Amanda's rage.
"James, get over here." The worker's voice was cold. "Or I'll kill her!"
James's eyes narrowed. It was Bryan.
