Chapter 74 A Slap in the Face
Kelsey shouted, "Donna, is this your level of decency?"
Hearing these words, Kelsey's enthusiasm cooled instantly.
"My decency is indeed not as high as yours." Donna crossed her arms and smiled. "But I'm in good health, with no muscle atrophy. I have parents to rely on, and I earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. What do you have?"
Upon hearing that both James and Kelsey were poor, the female sales assistants immediately looked disdainful, feeling that their time was being wasted.
"I will file a complaint with your company." Kelsey shouted, "Complaint about your rudeness and insulting a customer."
She didn't mind being offended, but she couldn't let James be humiliated.
"Customers?" Donna's lips twisted into a mocking grin. "You're claiming to be our customers? That's the most hilarious thing I've heard all year. You can't possibly afford the clothes here. Even the least expensive piece costs over two thousand dollars. Can you handle that kind of price tag? One of you is a son-in-law living off his wife. The other is a desperate patient, selling everything she owns to afford her treatments. And you dare to call yourselves our customers? Don't think we're oblivious. You're just here to soak up the air conditioning, snap a few photos with the clothes for your social media, and pretend to be something you're not. Customers? You're just posing."
The pretty sales assistants gasped, realizing James was a freeloader, their eyes filled with even more disdain and contempt.
James couldn't be bothered to argue with Donna. He pulled Kelsey and said calmly, "Kelsey, let's take this set and leave."
Donna glanced at Kelsey's suit. "This is a luxury store. Check the price before buying to avoid embarrassment."
Kelsey then looked at the tag, $13,200, and was startled.
James ignored Donna and asked Kelsey directly, "Do you like this one?"
Kelsey shook her head vigorously. It was too expensive.
Donna snorted in disdain. "You two put on quite a show. If you can't afford it, admit it. What's the point of discussing preferences in this matter?"
"Leave quickly, don't disrupt our business."
The female sales assistants also mocked, urging James and Kelsey to leave and not affect their sales.
Seeing the commotion, other customers gathered to watch.
Kelsey's face turned cold. "Donna, we are customers!"
Donna said, "Only paying customers are gods. We do not serve ordinary people who are here only to enjoy free air conditioning."
Donna tilted her head towards a sales assistant. "Take the suit for maintenance later to avoid giving other customers a bad experience."
The pretty sales assistant nodded respectfully. "Yes!"
Kelsey was furious. "Donna, we have no grudges. Why are you treating me like this?"
"Grudge?" Donna smiled indifferently. "Kelsey, you're too naive. I'm not targeting you. I'm the store manager here, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. And you, seriously ill, jobless, hanging out with James."
Her words carried a hint of mockery. "There's nothing about you worth targeting. You're just paranoid and utterly clueless. And if you really want to buy clothes, this isn't the place for you."
Donna pointed to the street outside the window and said, "Street vendor goods are more suitable for you, though even those cost over $15 apiece. If you really want to indulge in vanity, fine. For old times' sake, I'll take you to pick some discounted outdated clothes."
Seeing more people gathering to watch, Donna's desire to humiliate them grew stronger.
Donna said, "Bring out a few clearance items from last year."
"Kelsey, return the clothes to her!" James shed his usual gentleness and exuded an air of dominance as he instructed Kelsey to throw the suit back. "We'll buy from another store."
Kelsey complied without hesitation.
With a flick of her finger, Donna signaled the sales assistant to take over and reminded her once again."Take it for maintenance, and remember to disinfect it. Try a different store, but you can't afford the clothes in this mall even if you have gone to ten different stores."
The sales assistants and female customers sneered, thinking it was pointless to keep up the pretense.
James ignored them and led Kelsey to a store across the way, one even larger and more upscale than Donna's.
Trendy Vibes!
Donna looked at them indifferently. They couldn't even afford street-stall goods. How could they possibly afford Trendy Vibes?
Several Trendy Vibes sales assistants, though aware of the earlier commotion, still approached with friendly smiles. "Sir, Miss, how can we assist you?"
Kelsey tugged at James, wanting to leave.
"Take her measurements. I want a set of everything, including the underwear," James said, throwing out a bank card. "Remember, everything!"
"Every single item?" Upon hearing this, Donna burst into a charming laugh. "A freeloader, thinking he's a rich second generation? If his card can swipe $2000, I admit defeat."
Donna thought, 'Even Brian doesn't dare to buy clothes like this. Where does James get the money to pay?'
The Fashion Fusion sales assistants crossed their arms, waiting for the spectacle.
The sales assistant at Trendy Vibes hesitated but ultimately provided attentive service.
Soon, ten boxes were filled with clothes, totaling three million dollars.
James successfully swiped his card, paying in full in one go.
Instantly, Trendy Vibes was abuzz!
The surrounding sales assistants looked at James with admiration and at Kelsey with envy and jealousy!
No one had expected James to be so wealthy and spend so lavishly.
"Impossible."
A few sales assistants from Fashion Fusion were dumbfounded, tightly clenching their fists, their minds filled with intense regret.
Just moments ago, they had been gossiping that James was an ordinary man, a son-in-law living off his wife, only able to buy street vendor goods.
Now, they were filled with regret.
The most stunned of all was Donna. Besides disbelief, she felt an indescribable discomfort.
Donna thought, 'Why were you so weak and incompetent before, having to kneel to borrow twenty thousand dollars, but now you've become so extravagant?'
She had just said James wasn't a customer, just there for the air conditioning, and now James had spent three million dollars. How dare she look down on him?
Her hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual salary were nothing compared to James.
But there was no remedy for regret in this world. Donna could only endure the mocking gazes of everyone around her.
"By the way, everyone should know that this three million dollars was originally meant to be spent at Fashion Fusion, but Donna looked down on me." James smiled faintly at Donna. "So this three million dollars was pushed away by her. She harmed her fellow sales assistants, damaged the company's reputation, and cost the company millions in lost revenue."
These words not only made Donna hated by her colleagues but also made the company question her competence. Her high-paying job was as good as gone.
A killing blow to the heart.
Desperation washed over Donna.
At that moment, James's phone vibrated. He picked it up, and Daniel's anxious voice quickly came through. "James, something's wrong. The FDA is here to shut down the store."
