Chapter 77 Witchcraft Charms
When James left the police station, Kyle and Harold collapsed to the ground. James did not inquire about their fate; he knew it would not end well for them. Even if David had not eliminated them, Jared and Jonathan would not have let them off easily.
At three in the afternoon, in front of JZL Medical Clinic, David personally brought James back. He had also reissued the business license for JZL Medical Hall, which Samuel promptly hung up, taking a photo of James and David in the process.
Police Chief Scott followed David closely. Compared to David's steadiness, Scott was much more unruly, with an air of gunfire about him. He scrutinized James with sharp eyes as if trying to uncover something from him. However, he did not interrupt any of David's actions.
"James, Kyle, and Harold have already been taken down and held accountable. Their past corruption is enough to ruin them," David said, his tone markedly respectful towards James, a stark contrast to his high-handed demeanor the previous day. "Harold confessed that it was Mary who instructed him to do this."
James fell silent for a moment, surprised that the woman had indeed followed through, trying to shut down JZL Medical Clinic. "But Mary only wanted him to prevent you from practicing medicine, fearing that your lack of skill might harm the neighborhood," David relayed the confession truthfully to James. "The one who really wanted to take you down and had Kyle closely cooperate was the young master of TG Company."
James smiled faintly. "Joseph?"
David nodded with a smile. "It seems James is well aware."
A trace of mockery crossed James's face. Joseph was indeed ruthless, using Mary to strike at him with no room for escape, able to advance or retreat as needed. Whether or not JZL Medical Hall was ultimately shut down, he could still sow discord between him and Mary.
Scott also looked at James with amusement. To him, such a man who allowed his wife to close down his medical practice must surely be a monumental failure, a veritable coward in the game of life.
"David, thank you. I'll handle the rest," James said, no longer concerned with the matter, and smiled at David, "Did something happen yesterday?"
David immediately grasped James's hand upon hearing this, "I didn't realize your capabilities." He unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a sturdy chest with four severe bruises, dark and blue but not fatal. He then took out the charm James had given to Patrick. The red paper charm had turned into a pile of ashes, which scattered in the wind.
Scott was slightly surprised. "David, what exactly happened?"
David glanced at Scott and then recounted the events of the previous day. After leaving the Enchanted Vine Tavern, he drove home to take a nap. For some reason, he couldn't wake up from the nap, even though he was conscious. His body and eyelids felt unbearably heavy.
Fortunately, just as he was about to suffocate, a burning sensation in his chest brought him back to clarity, allowing him to open his eyes and breathe.
Even so, he was exhausted, drenched in sweat.
Scott muttered, "That's just being overtired. What's so strange about that?"
"Shut up," David reprimanded Scott and continued his story.
He had initially attributed it to fatigue, but his daughter's actions in the evening gave him a fright.
His seven-year-old daughter had taken her mother's lipstick, painted her lips a glaring red, and then played a horror game with a white cloth—pretending to hang herself. He tried to rush over but found his legs too heavy to move.
Fortunately, a sharp pain in his chest allowed him to call out to his wife, who saved their daughter.
Hearing this, Scott's eyes widened in shock, not expecting his niece to go to such extremes.
However, he still didn't think much of it, attributing it to a child imitating what she saw on TV. After all, he had once pretended to commit seppuku as a child.
After comforting his daughter to sleep in the hospital, David wanted to talk to his wife, only to find her climbing over the eighth-floor balcony, looking dazed.
If not for the burning sensation in his chest that gave David the speed of a cheetah to rush to the balcony and pull her back, she would have been a splattered mess on the ground.
The strangest part was that this morning while driving his wife and daughter home, they were involved in a thirteen-car pileup on the highway. Seven cars lost control and crashed into David's vehicle, with the last one being a large truck that nearly crushed them.
Several times, David thought he was doomed, but the burning sensation in his chest kept him alert.
This clarity allowed him to instinctively turn the steering wheel, narrowly avoiding seven collisions and even escaping being buried alive by the truck's sand.
The family of three miraculously survived without harm.
David later realized that the burning sensation in his chest was caused by the charm James had given him.
However, when he took it out, it had turned into a pile of ashes. Knowing he had underestimated James, David immediately sought out Patrick after settling his wife and daughter.
Patrick made things easy for him by providing a phone number and the address of JZL Medical Hall.
When David called, Kyle happened to answer. Upon hearing that James was practicing medicine without a license, David went to JZL Medical Hall to investigate, then had Scott trace the phone and headed straight to the police station.
After hearing David's account, Scott found it thrilling but mostly considered it a series of coincidences. He thought the string of incidents was just bad luck.
However, Scott remained silent, hands behind his back, watching James, curious about how he would handle the situation.
"James, I've witnessed your abilities," David said, his tone filled with respect, unlike Scott's skepticism. "But my car hasn't been to any graveyards or come into contact with anything bad." He added, "I even personally searched the car and found nothing suspicious."
"Let me take a look at the car first," James said with a faint smile, then began to circle the Audi. Despite the numerous accidents, the Audi was undamaged, which confirmed James's suspicion that the car would only be destroyed if the person died. Since David survived, the Audi, as the source of the negative energy, remained intact.
David and Scott followed, looking left and right like curious children but finding nothing. "David and I personally searched the car," Scott said flatly. "There was nothing suspicious."
James didn't respond. He continued to examine the car until his gaze locked onto the underside. He lay down, eyes fixed on the chassis, and then reached out and tore something off.
With a crisp sound, a witchcraft charm appeared in James's hand. The charm was eerily pale, wrapped in endless resentment. David was shocked. "A witchcraft charm? How did this get on my car? Who did this?"
Scott was also surprised, noting that the charm seemed to have been there for some time.
"Just a single piece of paper can't create such intense negativity," James observed, scrutinizing the design on the charm. He then maneuvered himself back under the Audi and, after a bit of rummaging, retrieved a altar cloth approximately three feet in length.
David's eyes widened, not expecting such an item to be entangled under the car.
James examined the altar cloth and crawled back under the car, this time retrieving a red shoe. David's body trembled, and Scott felt a chill run down his spine.
James placed the items on the ground and rolled under the car once more. Three minutes later, he emerged with a photograph in his hand. It was a memorial photo!
