Chapter 44 The YC Sword

"Answer it, quick!" Upon hearing that it was a call from Thousand Treasures Corporation, Alice's body shook with urgency as she pressed Lydia to answer quickly.

Lydia hurriedly picked up the phone. After a brief conversation, she hung up with astonishment on her face.

Alice immediately asked, "Lydia, who was that? What did they say?"

Charles and Addison also leaned in closer, curious.

Lydia said, "Mom, it was a call from Thousand Treasures Corporation," Lydia announced excitedly, "Secretary Sanders from Thousand Treasures Corporation said they've seen my resume and asked me to prepare my documents for training at their company tomorrow."

"They will also pay me a salary of three thousand dollars a month, and if I perform well, I can start an internship after three months."

"If I make no mistakes during the internship, I can then become a permanent employee, enjoying a basic salary of six thousand dollars plus bonuses."

Thinking of becoming a member of Thousand Treasure Corporation and earning so much money, Lydia's excitement made her speak more arrogantly.

"Really?" Alice looked at her daughter skeptically. "Are you sure it was Thousand Treasures Corporation calling?"

"Yes, I checked. The number was indeed from Thousand Treasures Corporation, and I recognize Secretary Sanders' voice," Lydia confirmed earnestly, "She once gave a lecture at my school."

Mary glanced at James, her expression a mix of surprise at his efficiency and annoyance at Olivia's compliance with his requests.

James understood the unspoken words, but he could only offer a wry smile, unable to explain that Taylor had taken him as a mentor.

Alice was thrilled to receive confirmation. "That's wonderful; my daughter is going to work at Thousand Treasures Corporation. Heaven really does watch over us."

This meant not only a bright future for her daughter but also a chance for her to boast proudly.

"It's not just heaven watching over us," Addison snorted, "James played a big part in this."

Mary and James exchanged a smile, appreciating the rare acknowledgment from Addison.

"James?" Alice snapped back, scoffing, "Are you deaf? Didn't you hear Lydia say that Thousand Treasures Corporation saw her resume?"

"It's clearly Lydia's excellence that Thousand Treasures Corporation recognized, choosing her from among thousands."

"What does this have to do with James?"

"Do you really think I would believe that Lydia got into Thousand Treasures Corporation because of a phone call he made?"

Her gaze was scornful. "That's just a coincidence."

Lydia also sneered, "Aunt Addison, not to mention James is just nobody; even if he has some connections, you can't enter Thousand Treasures Corporation just through connections."

"They must have been attracted by my looks and personality; that's why they hired me as fresh blood."

She momentarily forgot that she had come here to pull strings.

Mary was taken aback. "Lydia..."

"Enough, stop it." Alice interrupted Mary impatiently. "If you want to give James some credit, just say so, but don't attribute Lydia's own merits to his capabilities."

"He is just a son-in-law who still depends on the Smith family for pocket money, how could he help my Lydia get into Thousand Treasures Corporation?"

"You can't even get a favor from Raymond; how could James possibly manage it? Go fool someone else."

She refused to believe James had any influence.

Addison couldn't help but stand up. "James indeed isn't a figure, but he knows Olivia..."

"James, tell her, did you help?"

She was about to explode with frustration.

She knew well that Lydia, with her capabilities, couldn't even get a job as a nurse at the CF Clinic, let alone be chosen by Thousand Treasures Corporation for a salary of three thousand dollars.

It must have been James pulling strings with Olivia.

She didn't like James, but she couldn't let Alice forget the contributions of the Smith family.

"Aunt Alice..." Just as James was about to explain, Alice rudely cut him off.

She said, "Aunt Alice? Do you think you can call me that?"

"Enough, let's not drag this out any further, or we'll end up bringing Aaron into this."

"Today, Lydia got into Thousand Treasures Corporation, and I'm happy so that I won't argue with you opportunists anymore."

"If saying James helped makes you happy, then let's declare he did. Whatever floats your boat, alright?"

"But I won't be coming through these doors again. I'll leave the gift box as a farewell gift."

"Take care of yourselves."

With that, she proudly walked away with Lydia.

As Lydia left, a moment of doubt crossed her mind. 'Did I actually apply to Thousand Treasures Corporation?'

Then, dismissing the thought, she reassured herself that no matter what, she was now a part of Thousand Treasures Corporation, soon to reach the pinnacle of her life.

Alice and Lydia's figures quickly disappeared, leaving Addison and Charles with grim expressions, clearly stifled with frustration.

James gave a wry smile, realizing he had caused trouble for Taylor, and vowed to make it up to her.

Mary tried to soothe her parents. "Dad, Mom, let it go; there's no point in arguing with Aunt Alice..."

"Useless." Addison slammed the coffee table, scolding James, "You can't even handle a small matter."

Then she stormed upstairs with a darkened face.

"James, since you helped them, this is the gift Aunt Alice sent; you keep it." Charles tossed the gift box to James, then also left in a sullen mood.

James, puzzled, shook his head. "Mr. Smith, you keep it; I don't need these things."

"Just take it. Don't make a fuss," Charles waved dismissively, not allowing James to say another word.

Mary gently tugged at James's sleeve, hinting it was better to go along for now.

"I'm going to change. I'll help you cook later." Mary let go and headed upstairs with her handbag.

James opened the gift box to find a ceramic piece that was neither particularly old nor new, looking like a flawed product from the 1970s.

Believing it wouldn't fetch more than 30 dollars in an antique market, James was about to set it aside when the Life Gem on his left hand twitched slightly.

Sensing a strong malicious intent, he grew cautious.

Yet, when James examined the ceramic closely, everything seemed okay. It appeared utterly ordinary.

However, the Life Gem grew increasingly active, as if something within was drawing it.

James rushed to the kitchen and smashed the ceramic in a secluded corner.

Instantly, a beam of light burst from the shattered pieces.

James squinted reflexively.

A soft sword about five inches long appeared before him.

It was thin as a cicada's wing, flexible as water, shaped like small intestines, yet seemingly extremely sharp.

James was ecstatic. "The YC Sword!"
