Chapter 207 This is My Boyfriend
'Mr. Bell?'
James glanced up, curious, realizing Kaitlyn was also trying to use him as a shield.
But he wasn't pissed. If Kaitlyn had other choices, she wouldn't be here bugging him.
Kaitlyn flashed a grin, "It's a friends' hangout. James is my bro-in-law and my buddy, so duh, he can come."
Sophie shot James a look that could kill.
She'd only been in Rosewood City for a week, but James had already turned her life upside down. The antique shop fiasco had even earned her a major chewing out from Keith.
Tonight's shindig was her shot at redemption, and she couldn't afford any screw-ups. Seeing James made her instantly on edge.
"What?" James met Sophie's glare coolly. "Not happy to see me? Fine, I won't go."
Kaitlyn blinked. "James, if you don't go, I'm out too."
"Get in the car," Sophie snapped, clearly not giving a damn about James and acting all frosty.
Even though she was impressed by James' skills at the antique shop and with Nathaniel, Sophie still saw him as a nobody.
How could a small-time clinic owner stack up against the rich kids she knew?
Especially Damon, who had a thing for Kaitlyn.
Damon wasn't just tall and handsome like a movie star; he came from a big-shot family. His dad was a pharmaceutical mogul in Stardust City, and his grandpa was the president of the Mystic Alliance in Glowing Oasis. He was the real deal, way better than Nathaniel.
Keith was even thinking of bringing him into their circle.
Compared to him, James was like dirt compared to the star.
But she was worried Kaitlyn wouldn't show up at the party, so she had to swallow her anger.
Thinking of this, Sophie opened the car door and got in, giving James zero respect.
"James, get in the car." Seeing the tension, Kaitlyn stuck out her tongue and dragged James into the car, sitting in the back seat.
Sophie hit the gas, and the car sped off. It didn't take long for them to reach a club.
Once inside, Sophie let Kaitlyn go in first and cornered James.
"James, this is a waste of time," Sophie said bluntly. "Don't you have any self-awareness?"
James responded calmly, "What are you talking about?"
Sophie's face darkened. "You run a tiny clinic, you're divorced, and only a loser in this city. Why are you hanging onto Kaitlyn? Hasn't the Smith Family ever told you the gap between you two?"
"I know you have some skills, you know medicine, and you get antiques, but those are nothing compared to power and influence."
Sophie was relentless. "You better stay away from Kaitlyn. You're not good enough for her!"
James smirked. "Are you misunderstanding something?"
"What do you mean?" Sophie was fuming. "Are you saying that Kaitlyn is clinging to you?"
"You're really full of yourself. Who do you think you are? You're someone the Smith Family kicked out, and Kaitlyn would cling to you?"
"Let me tell you, you're not even fit to be friends with Kaitlyn, let alone be in a relationship with her. You're not in our league at all."
"I brought Kaitlyn here today to introduce her to a rich heir. Your presence will piss him off."
Sophie was brutally rude, and her words were cutting. "You shouldn't even stay for this meal."
James sneered and was about to put Sophie in her place when Kaitlyn returned.
"James, why aren't you coming in?"
She stepped forward and took James' arm, clearly worried he might bail at the last minute.
"James said he's not feeling well and won't stay for the meal. He asked to borrow some cash from me to take a cab home and rest."
Sophie shot James a frosty look, then handed him $15. "Here, keep it. No need to pay it back."
She was clearly trying to get rid of him.
Kaitlyn asked, worried, "James, you feeling okay? Need to hit up the hospital?"
"Seeing you makes me feel a whole lot better," James said, ignoring Sophie. "Let's go grab some grub."
He took Kaitlyn's hand and strolled into the club.
Sophie stomped her foot in anger. "When Damon gets pissed later, you'll regret it," she muttered.
They walked into a small courtyard named Dream of the South, decked out in vintage style with flowing water, oozing luxury.
Inside, a dozen young men and women were already gathered, all dressed to the nines, dripping with wealth and status.
Seeing Kaitlyn and her crew, everyone turned their heads, and countless eyes lit up.
Kaitlyn's pure and innocent look was a showstopper.
"Sophie, you made it?" One of the young guys laughed and gave Sophie a hug.
The dude had chiseled features, a high nose bridge, and a tall, straight figure. He was rocking designer clothes, and the watch on his wrist looked like it cost a fortune.
He had that noble heir vibe from head to toe.
"Mr. Bell, sorry, we ran into a dog on the way and got held up a bit," Sophie giggled, her face full of charm, squeezing herself into the guy's body. "Hope you understand."
"Your presence is my honor, no worries about being late," Damon said, taking a sip of red wine. He then looked at Kaitlyn. "This must be Kaitlyn, the Miss Smith you mentioned?"
"Yep, this is Kaitlyn," Sophie said, introducing her. "A top student from the University of Communications, as pure as a blank sheet of paper."
"Miss Smith, nice to meet you," Damon extended his hand. "I'm Damon, from the Bell family in Stardust City. I hope Miss Smith will take care of me in the future."
He smiled brightly, but his eyes sparkled, and his breathing got subtly heavier.
Kaitlyn's youth, purity, and innocence had stirred his wicked thoughts.
He had a strong urge to ravage her.
He was very pleased with the gift Keith had arranged.
"Mr. Bell, nice to meet you," Kaitlyn nodded slightly, not shaking his hand, and then pulled James over with a smile. "Let me introduce you, this is my boyfriend, James Williams."
She could see the heat in Damon's eyes, so she used James to divert his attention.
"James?" Damon's eyes instantly flashed. "Boyfriend?"
"Mr. Bell, Kaitlyn is joking with you," Sophie immediately undermined her. "James is Kaitlyn's brother-in-law, ex-brother-in-law, to be precise."
"He runs a small clinic, charges thirty or a hundred bucks for a consultation. How could Kaitlyn be interested in him?"
The whole room burst into laughter, not expecting a small clinic owner to crash a rich kids' party.
Several pretty girls even showed disdain, like they thought James' presence lowered the class of the event.
"Oh, I see, interesting," Damon nodded in realization, then looked at James with disdain. "So, Mr. Brother-in-law, don't overstep; it's easy to get into trouble."
His words were light, but his face carried a threat and anger because Kaitlyn was leaning into James' arms, almost clinging to him.
Kaitlyn hurriedly exclaimed, "James really is my boyfriend."
The dozen or so people present all shook their heads and chuckled, seemingly thinking Kaitlyn's trick was too lame.
"Kaitlyn, stop playing," Damon laughed out loud. "How could he deserve you?"
As he finished speaking, James wrapped his arm around Kaitlyn's slender waist and kissed her on the cheek.
"How about now?"
