Chapter 378 Invisible Killing
James jumped into the river!
The thought flashed through Mary's mind, and she instinctively followed suit.
The river was deep, the night was dark, and someone jumping in was almost certainly going to end in disaster.
Thinking of James drowning, Mary's anger and confusion vanished, replaced by a single-minded determination to save him.
In that moment, she completely forgot about her own safety.
With a loud splash, Mary plunged into the river, her body sinking rapidly and sending up a spray of water.
Mary underestimated the coldness of the river; her body stiffened instinctively as soon as she was submerged.
For a moment, it felt like her limbs no longer belonged to her, completely beyond her control, as the rushing water engulfed her head.
Her body sank about ten feet before slowing down and starting to rise again. The river was icy cold, and several currents buffeted her body.
The force felt like a hammer blow, making her blood churn.
Mary felt a sharp pain in her chest, almost spitting out blood, but she couldn't worry about herself. She surfaced and shouted, "James! James!"
Ignoring the calm water and the noise from the shore, Mary kept shouting, "James, where are you?"
She was indeed angry seeing James with Olivia at the hotel, but seeing him not fight back and then jump into the river without hesitation convinced her of his innocence.
So now, Mary's anxiety outweighed her anger, her face showing only concern. "James, come out, come out."
"I believe you, I believe you have nothing to do with Olivia. I won't hit you, I won't yell at you."
"Just come out, please."
Mary swam frantically, searching for any sign of James, hoping to see his shadow.
Tears streamed down her face.
Seeing no reaction from the river and realizing she was drifting further from the shore, Mary felt even more anxious.
She couldn't remember if James could swim, which made her worry even more about his safety.
After circling around, Mary cried out, "I'll listen to your explanation, please get out here."
Just as she finished speaking, James surfaced about nine feet away, a smile on his face. "You said it, you'll listen to my explanation."
"You're okay?" Mary was first stunned, then delighted, and then her face turned cold with anger. "You tricked me? James, you're shameless."
Seeing James so composed, Mary realized he had been in control all along, waiting for her to give him a chance.
Thinking of her frantic concern and tears, Mary felt humiliated and instinctively grew angry at James again.
"I was wrong." James swam closer, smiling. "As long as you listen to my explanation, I'll accept any punishment."
Mary punched and kicked at James. "Get lost."
She had been scared to death just now, so she had to get back at him.
The buoyancy of the water made Mary's attacks feel like tickling, having no effect on James.
When Mary's movements slowed, James hugged her waist. "The water is cold, let's get out of here before we get sick."
Mary's tone was still unforgiving. "It's because you watched too many TV dramas and jumped in, causing trouble for everyone."
Being hugged by James, Mary's body softened unconsciously. She thought she would be angry and push James away, but she didn't resist.
James smiled. "Then why did you jump in after me?"
"I wanted to see if you were really dead."
Mary's face was cold. "You think I came to save you? I came to collect your body."
Her words were harsh, but James knew she cared about him.
Jumping in, James had purely wanted to provoke and move Mary, but he hadn't expected her to jump in without hesitation.
The river was dark, the currents fierce, and even a good swimmer would face great danger.
James felt a surge of emotion as he realized how much Mary cared for him.
At that moment, a dozen bodyguards from Smith Corporation appeared on the shore, tossing down a few life rings to help James and Mary.
Then, several soft ladders were lowered into the water, ready for them to climb up.
"Let's get out of here," James said, releasing Mary's waist. "Be careful."
Mary responded coldly, "You get up here too. I need to deal with you later."
She grabbed the ladder and started to climb up. Suddenly, she felt something hit her back. Thinking it was James messing with her, she turned angrily to scold him.
But when she turned, she saw someone clinging to her back.
A round head, long arms and legs, pale skin, blood-red eyes, and a slightly open mouth, like a fish waiting to be slaughtered.
He was swaying with the river; it was unclear if he was dead or alive.
Mary screamed, jumping away in fright, and rushed into James's arms. "A dead body!"
James hugged Mary tightly, simultaneously drawing his Piercing Blade, his eyes sharp as he looked ahead. His aura became instantly fierce.
At the same time, six flashlights from the shore illuminated the scene, revealing guns beneath them. All the gun barrels were aimed at the figure in the water.
After calming Mary's panic, James instructed her to climb up the other ladder while he approached with the Piercing Blade to investigate. He wanted to see who this person was.
Mary, now on the shore, instinctively shouted, "James, be careful."
James nodded lightly, then moved half a meter closer, asking for a flashlight to be thrown down. He shone the light on the pale face. "Clarence!"
He couldn't believe it; the half-dead figure was Clarence. The once proud Riverfront King was now a powerless fish, lying limp on the water, barely clinging to life. His face was even paler than before, his eyes filled with unshed tears and grief. He was on the brink of death.
James quickly had the Smith Corporation bodyguards pull Clarence up. Then James bent down to examine him, and his face changed instantly—Clarence was poisoned, with the same poison as Clifford.
Mary stepped forward. "James, who is he? Do you know him?"
"Stay back, he's infected with Sorcerous Poison." James stopped Mary from approaching, then used silver needles to stabilize Clarence's heart.
Mary stepped back, reminding James to be careful. The Smith Corporation bodyguards spread out, dispersing the crowd and standing guard.
"Save my daughter, save my daughter." As James's silver needles took effect, Clarence quickly regained consciousness, though he had never truly lost it, holding onto his grief and anger.
James was stunned. "Save your daughter? What happened to her?"
"Turns out you escaped here." Before Clarence could answer, a strange laugh echoed from a nearby corner, eerie and chilling. A cold wind blew, and the temperature along the riverfront seemed to drop instantly.
Mary shivered. "Who's there?"
"Who? Someone who wants you dead." The strange laugh grew sharper. "Meddling in my affairs, you'll die too."
Clarence struggled to kneel and shouted angrily, "Give me back my daughter."
A mist emerged from the corner, drifting slowly towards them. James's face changed dramatically. "Everyone, get over here."
Mary and a few bodyguards rushed towards James. Seven or eight Smith Corporation bodyguards were a bit slower, and as they moved, they were enveloped by the white mist.
They fell one after another, their faces turning green, foaming at the mouth, and convulsing on the ground.
Killing without a trace!
