Chapter 269 Furious Out of Shame

"What are you running out for?" James quickly composed himself and grabbed Mary by the waist. "Aren't you supposed to be on a blind date?"

Mary's body trembled slightly, clearly not used to James's touch, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she let out a playful hum, "Such a narrow-minded man..."

She adjusted the umbrella to cover James a bit more. "Why'd you run so fast? Now we're both soaked."

"Or what was I  supposed to do? Just wait there for Aunt Reese and the others to humiliate me?" James's fingers slid across Mary's waist. "Besides, you were just sitting there. If I stayed, it would've looked like I was pestering you."

"Am I not worth that?" Mary snapped back, then explained more calmly, "I knew if I didn't leave, it would embarrass you, but I had to respect them."

After all, it was Keith and his family who were angry now.

James got what Mary meant and then said with a sly smile, "So you chased after me. Does that mean you have feelings for me?"

"You're overthinking it," Mary shot back, following James. "I just felt sorry for you, worried you might jump into the river, so I came out to check."

James didn't buy it as he crossed his arms before his chest and said confidently, "Rejecting a proposal to marry into a wealthy family just shows you still care about me."

He knew deep down that Mary chasing after him not only meant the blind date failed but also might make Keith hold a grudge, making her future even tougher.

Mary, shy and unable to hold back, shouted, "If you keep babbling, I'll kick you into the river."

"I was tricked out by my mom and the others today." She hesitated for a moment, then finally explained, "They said they were taking me to a fancy restaurant for dinner, with my dad and sister coming along. I didn't suspect anything and followed them here, only to find out it was a blind date. I have no feelings for Keith at all. We met at a business association event and I've known him for quite a while. He hasn't harassed me directly but has sent some signals. Last time, the loan officer from Hundred Flowers Bank even pressured me with a loan to help Keith. How could I possibly like someone who has hurt me in such a dirty way?"

Mary didn't even know why she was explaining so much as if worried James might misunderstand something.

"Why are you explaining so much to me?" James said provocatively, "I'm just your ex-husband."

Before he finished speaking, Mary grabbed James's hand and bit down hard next to where Riley had bitten.

James couldn't help but scream in pain.

"You're really like a dog." He shook his wrist; it was much worse than Riley's.

"You deserve to be single." Mary angrily let go of James's wrist, ready to ignore him and hold the umbrella herself. Just then, her eyes narrowed slightly.

A black car slowly approached in the rain, not fast or conspicuous, but it made Mary's heart race.

The cold river wind blew, and Mary suddenly felt something was wrong.

Just as James also sensed danger and turned around, the black car suddenly accelerated, charging at James like a mad bull.

"Watch out!" Before James could grab Mary and dodge, Mary screamed and threw herself at James, pushing him away.

James stumbled forward several feet, just out of the car's collision range, but Mary stood in his place instead.

The car crashed into Mary with a roar, sending her flying over ten feet.

Blood spurted out!

"Mary!" James shouted, turning and rushing towards her.

The car screeched to a halt, and the door opened. In the next second, two masked men jumped out.

Their eyes were cold and cruel, and they directly stabbed at James.

They held two knives aimed straight at his heart and kidney. They were quite skilled.

When the knives pierced his clothes, James instinctively grabbed them with his hands, but all his movements froze like a statue.

James's gentle eyes turned confused and pained because, in his vision, Mary was lying a few feet away, her face pale and contorted in anguish.

Her eyes still flickered in the sunlight, yet they went far away as if life was being extracted from them. But the concern and care in her eyes hadn't diminished at all despite the car crash. Even a hint of resignation and acceptance appeared at the corner of her mouth, "Run!"

Blood gushed from her mouth, just like the crimson on James's hands. James wanted to shout but couldn't open his mouth. His whole body trembled in the rain, gripping the two knives tightly despite the pain. Blood flowed freely, but he stood firm as a mountain, preventing the blades from advancing any further.

Seeing James's ferocity, the two assailants reached for more weapons, pulling out military daggers. The sharp blades were intimidating. This glint of light brought clarity back to James's eyes.

James roared out all his anger. The two assailants' bodies trembled, their strength instinctively weakening. They felt as if their spirits and souls had heard a sorrowful, uncontrollable roar. The power of that roar was immense, fierce, and penetrated their hearts.

James's usual gentleness vanished, his eyes shining brightly, exuding a beast-like aura. James's hands sank, breaking the two knives. Before the assailants could react, James swept his left foot, breaking their legs, sending them flying with screams. Before they hit the ground, James moved, thrusting the broken knives into their throats. They fell to the ground. Life extinguished.

"Bastard!" The death of the two men caused someone to burst out of the car. It was Marvin from Keith's circle. He held a gun. James sensed danger and immediately moved three feet away. Almost as soon as James moved, a bullet hit the ground, leaving a shocking bullet hole. James twisted his body, rolling away to avoid the subsequent attacks!

Seeing his first shot miss, Marvin coldly advanced, firing continuously. The violent bullets, mixed with his killing intent, formed terrifying lines of fire. It was unstoppable. A bullet drilled into James's left shoulder, making him shudder, blood spraying out. James rolled to the side, kicking a corpse towards the approaching Marvin.

With a sideward glance, Marvin relentlessly squeezed the trigger, a torrent of bullets tearing through James's body, a stark testament to his unwavering desire to end him. When the silenced pistol ran out of bullets, Marvin pulled out another short gun. He kept firing, creating bullet holes everywhere, smoke filling the air.

James was hit three times, bleeding profusely, and was forced to hide behind a tree. As Marvin took a step forward to kill James, his gun clicked empty. His face changed slightly, realizing he had forgotten to reload. Just as he reached for a new magazine, a flash of white light appeared above the sycamore tree.

A cold gleam instantly reached Marvin's throat. Marvin had never seen such speed, nor such a fast sword, even better than Francis. This sword, with its stunning elegance and unmatched killing intent, struck with an unstoppable force. The sword cut throught the air, followed by a sharp sound.

Raising his gun, Marvin felt a chill on his neck. Marvin retreated. The last thing he registered was the widening gash in his neck, spreading to a full inch in width. In front of him was James's cold face.
