Chapter 312 Please Don't Drink
After two slaps and a stern warning, Addison was much more well-behaved for the rest of the evening.
Although she still put on airs, she no longer acted bossy or hit people randomly, making James enjoy his meal much more.
After dinner, James had a cup of tea and then left the villa. He planned to find Olivia to talk about Molly.
The car sped along, and in no time, it had covered half the distance. Just as James was about to turn onto the side road, a familiar figure came into his view.
On the steps of the square, a girl sat in a dimly lit corner, brushing her hair aside while eating a piece of bread, seemingly she had just finished a part-time job.
Her thin figure looked especially lonely in the evening breeze.
It was Samantha.
James frowned slightly, parked the car by the roadside, and walked over, "Hey, Samantha! Why are you still out so late?"
"D... Dr. Williams," Samantha was startled at first and instinctively shrank back. Recognizing James, she spoke up, "Ugh... I just finished handing out flyers."
Her cheeks inexplicably turned red, as if she wasn't used to talking to the men.
As she spoke, she also pulled the bread in her palm back, preparing to wrap it in paper and put it back in her pocket.
Although it wasn't the same bread from earlier, it was just as dry.
"You like this bread so much, let me try it, too." James snatched Samantha's bread and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing twice before swallowing.
"Not bad, just a bit dry." James smacked his lips, looking quite satisfied.
Samantha couldn't help but open her mouth wide, her pitiful eyes showing a hint of surprise.
She clearly didn't expect James to eat her bread, especially the half she had already eaten.
This made her panic, not knowing how to handle the situation.
"Anymore left? I'd like to eat one," James asked again, "I'm starving."
"Yea... yeah, here you are," Samantha's mind went blank, and she instinctively nodded. She then pulled out another paper bag with another piece of bread inside.
James didn't hesitate, taking it and eating it in big bites. He quickly finished it, even tossing the crumbs from his palm into his mouth.
Samantha watched James in shock, never expecting him to ask her for bread and eat it so heartily.
"Mmm... the bread is yummy, but I still feel hungry," James patted his stomach and said, "And since I ate your bread, I should return the favor. "
"Come on, have some porridge with me," James nodded towards a nearby restaurant.
"No... no need," Samantha instinctively stood up, "I'm full, I can't eat anymore. I'm going home."
She prepared to leave quietly, like a frightened bird.
"Wait," James suddenly called out to her.
Samantha was startled and stopped in her tracks, glancing at James before lowering her head.
She was actually quite pretty.
"Come here," James's face was stern.
Samantha's eyelids twitched, and she wanted to speak but found no sound came out. Her expression showed she really wanted to leave.
"I said come here," James commanded again.
Samantha bit her lip and walked over. Probably because she was scared, her pretty face was a bit pale.
"Let's go, have some porridge with me," James said, he had figured out Samantha's personality. He no longer asked for her opinion but directly commanded, giving her no chance to hesitate.
After speaking, James walked towards the restaurant across the street with his car keys.
Samantha hesitated for a moment but eventually followed James.
On the way, she squeezed the $30 she had just earned.
James took Samantha to the restaurant, chose a corner to sit in, and then picked up the menu.
He ordered some simple and plain foods, not because he didn't want to treat Samantha to a big meal, but because he was worried that her stomach, used to cold bread and water, wouldn't handle greasy food well.
"Order whatever you like." James handed the menu to Samantha.
Samantha said nervously, "No... no need, I'm not hungry..."
At the same time, she glanced at the menu, checking the prices of the dishes James had just ordered to see if $30 would be enough to cover the bill.
James had treated her and she now still owed him two dollars; Samantha couldn't let him pay.
"I ate your bread, so you have nothing to eat. How can you not be hungry?" James called out to the owner, "Another basket of bread, please."
Samantha's eyelids twitched, and she glanced at the price of the bread again.
Samantha probably had never eaten with a man before. Especially thinking about how James had seen her back that afternoon, her cheeks turned red.
Sensing the awkward atmosphere, James casually started a conversation. "What kind of part-time job do you do?"
"Dressing up as a bunny and handing out a thousand flyers," Samantha lowered her head and replied.
"How much do you make in one night?" James asked.
"S... seven dollars," Samantha said lowly.
"How long does it usually take to finish?" James asked.
"Th... three to four hours," Samantha replied.
"So, you get off work at ten? How do you get home so late? Bus? Subway?" James felt pitiful for her, his voice eager.
"I... I ride a shared bike, it's free," Samantha said.
James asked straightforwardly, while Samantha stammered in response. She was clearly not used to being questioned like this but didn't know how to refuse.
"Oh my god, you shouldn't do it anymore, it's not safe for you. You're just a girl, how can you always work so late in the evening?" James looked at Samantha intently, "I need someone to sort herbs at JZL Medical Clinic. You can work part-time there. Eight hours a day, with meals and accommodation provided, two days off a week, $600 a month."
He had originally wanted to offer $1,000 but was afraid of scaring Samantha, so he gave a lower figure.
"Ugh... work at JZL Medical Clinic?" Samantha opened her mouth in shock. "But... but I don't know anything."
"You've dried herbs for villagers before. With a little training, you'll get the hang of it," James encouraged her, "Even Stephen, that spoiled brat, could get the hang of it after a week. You definitely won't have a problem. Also, you got into Stardust City Medical University, which shows you have a passion for medicine. Working at JZL Medical Clinic will only benefit you in the future. And I have three experts there who are better than your school teachers. You'll benefit for life from a year of learning there. Most importantly, working at JZL Medical Clinic will not only help you save up for tuition but also make it easier for me to treat you."
James made the decision directly. "It's settled. Pack up tomorrow and report to JZL Medical Clinic the day after."
Samantha had just recovered and couldn't work too hard, so James decided to lend a hand.
Samantha's mind was in chaos, she could only nervously wring her hands.
James shattered Samantha's hesitation. "Don't think about it. This will also ease Melissa's burden."
Samantha blushed and bit her lip tightly, "Al... alright."
Seeing Samantha agree to go to JZL Medical Clinic, James was pleased and waved for a bottle of chilled beer, opening it with a click.
At that moment, a small hand reached over.
Samantha's palm covered the bottle's opening, and she looked at James cautiously, "You... you drove here, please don't drink."
