Chapter 23
The words' Jacob Davis', like a terrible curse, linger in the ear, ceaselessly echoing.
Serena never would have guessed that the private number James had given her belonged to Jacob.
This implied a close relationship between the two.
Jacob may appear weak to James, but he's actually a powerhouse in Rosewood City, controlling most of its grey and black market industries.
With a simple word, he could end Serena's life, and a chill ran down her spine.
Sweat poured down Serena's face, soaking her charming features. She struggled to look at James, only to see him sitting calmly on a chair.
James poured a cup of coffee and said, "Well? Did you get through?"
Serena knelt straight and said, "Mr. Williams, I was wrong; I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please forgive me."
She didn't care about her dignity and slapped herself twice.
The dozen or so security guards also quickly knelt upon seeing this.
Stanley, with a face full of malice, was shocked to see this and asked, "Serena, why are you kneeling? Get up and fight him."
"How could this happen?" Ava and the others also had their eyes wide open, their expressions twitching, wondering why Serena had suddenly knelt.
Mary, Samuel, and the others were even more surprised, completely unaware of what was going on.
Just then, the elevator chimed and opened, and more than a dozen burly men swarmed out.
Two of them even kicked away a few security guards who were blocking the way.
Their momentum was astonishing.
The chaotic footsteps approached, and the onlookers gathered at the door instinctively turned their heads to look.
The club staff also quickly made way, not daring to breathe too heavily.
Despite Jacob's head being almost wrapped up like a dumpling, they still recognized him.
The Buddhist beads around his neck and his unique gait were too distinctive.
Jacob, with his head wrapped in gauze, walked in his demeanor that of an unrivaled king.
He said, "James, finally, I see you!"
By the time Serena turned her head to look at the entrance, Jacob had already strode in.
Seeing James brought relief to Jacob; his eyes lit up, his anxiety eased. Despite the hour-long journey, twice the usual duration due to accidents, and nearly tripping at the entrance, his spirits lifted at the sight of James
Jacob enthusiastically grabbed James's hand and said, "Let's go somewhere quiet; let me take a look at you."
Seeing this, Ava and the others were instantly shocked, their minds buzzing.
Why was Jacob so polite to James?
At that moment, they were in a daze. Wasn't James just a son-in-law who had married into the family? How could he be mixed up with Jacob?
Jacob was the one with a reputation; how did James have to make him so respectful?
No wonder James was always so calm. It turned out that he wasn't pretending but really had confidence.
Ava and Madelyn were shocked but also felt a hint of frustration and unwillingness.
Why was James so awesome?
Stanley's face also changed drastically.
While Jacob and his father, Jared Sullivan, were on par in wealth, Jacob's backing dwarfed that of ten Sullivan families combined. Moreover, Jared and the Sullivans wouldn't dare challenge the SH Corporation.
The Sullivan family developed thanks to the SH Corporation, which protected demolition, renovation, sand, and stone.
Just last week, the Disney project that the Sullivan family got was contracted from the SH Corporation.
So Stanley, despite his rebellious nature, knew that tonight wouldn't end well.
"Go?" James gave a faint smile. "You can't."
"This guy named Stanley..."
"He forced others to borrow money, bullied my wife, hit people, and said that he wanted to call the SH Corporation to deal with me."
"If I leave, not only will I be laughed at by them, but my wife will also continue to be hurt by them."
James casually threw out a few sentences, which instantly plunged Stanley and his gang into despair.
Jacob's gaze became cold as he stared at Stanley. He asked, "Who are you?"
Stanley quickly spoke up, "Mr. Davis, I am Stanley..."
"I don't know you," Jacob rudely interrupted him, "The SH Corporation won't be your backing, and it won't possibly deal with James for you."
"I will ask your elders to explain your words and deeds today."
"Also, I need you to understand one thing. James is a VIP of SH Corporation; he is my friend."
"Opposing James is opposing me and the SH Corporation."
His declaration, filled with murderous intent, left Ava and the others in disbelief.
They had originally thought that James just had some relationship with Jacob, but they didn't expect his status to be so respected and inviolable.
The SH Corporation was even tied to James.
Stanley's body was instantly soaked with sweat.
He was good at bullying women, but when faced with someone like Jacob, he had no confidence at all.
"Who else wants to oppose James?" Jacob narrowed his cold eyes and looked at the crowd, who were like a deer caught in the headlights.
Ava and the others were shivering, frozen in place, unsure of what to do.
The consequences of offending James, who even Stanley had to please, were unimaginable to them.
"Misunderstanding!" Stanley wiped his cold sweat, knowing he had caused big trouble.
Jacob slapped Stanley's face and said, "Misunderstanding?"
"Bullying James's woman, with so many eyes watching, and dare you to say it's a misunderstanding?"
Stanley covered his cheek and said, "Mr. Davis, my father is Jared; I hope you can give him a face......"
Jacob slapped him again and said, "Your father? Are you trying to get Jared killed?"
"Besides, even if I give a face to Jared, can he afford it?"
Jacob looked at Ava and the others and shouted, "Can you afford the face I give you?"
Ava and the others lowered their heads, wishing they could bury their heads in the ground.
For the first time, Stanley felt what it was like to be desperate.
However, Jacob did not let it go at that and said, "James is a simple man; he doesn't like to see blood, but I always repay an eye for an eye."
"Those who offended James tonight, step forward."
"One hand for each person."
"Whoever dares to pretend to be deaf and dumb, that's two hands."
Jacob's words were decisive, a chilling aura enveloping the entire room.
Seeing that the desired effect was achieved, James gave a faint smile and signaled for Samuel and the others to leave with him.
Ava and Madelyn instinctively yelled out, "Mary."
Mary paused for a moment.
James held her hand and walked out of the room.
Ava and the other women started crying on the spot.
Stanley and his followers, who had been trying to maintain their masculine pride, also turned pale.
Although they didn't fall, their legs were already trembling.
A rather glamorous woman collapsed on the ground, crying out in desperation, "I just came to join in the fun!"
"It's not my fault, it really isn't; please don't mess with me!" The cocky young man in the trench coat turned to run but was knocked down by a shotgun blast at the window.
The scene was quickly surrounded by Jacob's people.
There were cries of despair everywhere.
As Mary entered the elevator and heard the screams, she looked at James and whispered, "James,"
"Some people must be taught a lesson." James looked at her and smiled. "Otherwise, they will haunt us, and I can't let them hurt you again."
Mary didn't say anything more. She felt that James had changed a lot; he had grown a lot more capable than before, but it also made her feel a bit unfamiliar.
She didn't know whether to be happy or worried...
"Samuel, help me escort Mary home," When the elevator opened on the first floor, James patted the bruised Samuel and said, "Call me if anything happens."
"Okay, don't worry, James, I will definitely send Mary... no, Ms. Smith home safely."
Samuel, who had been sneaking glances at James, was overjoyed and immediately agreed enthusiastically.
Mary also knew that James had things to deal with Jacob, so she nodded and headed towards the red BMW at the door.
James watched her go.
As Mary opened the car door, she suddenly looked up and shouted, "Come back early."
James nodded and smiled; his smile was brilliant.
