Chapter 40

Emily knew that Mary gave James an allowance every month, but ten million dollars was absolutely impossible, and Mary couldn't have come up with that kind of money. So Emily's first reaction was that the check was fake.

But upon closer inspection, she saw that the seal was complete, there were no alterations, the case was consistent, and although the signature was unclear, it was done in one go. Her professional instincts told her the check was real.

When everyone heard the check might be fake, they all looked over, whispering among themselves.

James calmly spoke up, "The check is real."

"Where did you get this check from?" Emily shoved the check into her pocket, her gaze fierce as she stared at James. She asked, "Did you steal it from the Smith family?"

"I'll give you one chance to answer honestly, or else I'll call Mary over and then call the police to arrest you."

Even if the check was real, it couldn't possibly belong to James.

A crowd gathered around, hearing about a man who married into a family carrying a check for ten million dollars. They all clicked their tongues, mocking James for his unclean hands.

Which family would give so much money to a son-in-law?

Several female employees curled their lips in disdain, mocking James for living off a woman and also for stealing. He was despicable.

James's voice deepened. "This is my check."

"Your check?" Emily scoffed, "How could a man living off Mary have a check for ten million dollars?"

"You must have stolen a check from the Smith family."

"I'm telling you, you've committed a crime."

Then, she picked up her phone and called Mary, "Mary, come to the bank quickly, there's been an incident."

"You are being unreasonable," James was angry. "I want to see your bank manager."

"The bank manager isn't at your beck and call," Emily exclaimed fervently. "Stay put. I can't wait to see you squirm when Mary arrives and discovers your theft of the check."
Her eyes glittered with anticipation, certain that Mary's discovery of James' deceit would inevitably lead to their divorce.

Once they were divorced, Joseph could directly marry Mary.

"What's going on? Emily." Soon after, a red BMW pulled up at the entrance, and Mary rushed into the bank.

When she saw James, she was slightly taken aback and asked, "James, what are you doing here?"

At the same time, several people came through the employee passage, and a middle-aged man with a stern face demanded, "What's going on?"

Emily hurriedly explained, "Mr. Mitchell, someone tried to cash a stolen check."

Gregory Mitchell's brows furrowed.

"It's this bastard. He stole a check from the Smith family, and I caught him red-handed," Emily pointed at James and shouted, "He won't admit it, but I've brought the rightful owner here."

Then, she turned to Mary and said, "Mary, you should call the police and arrest him, then you can divorce him."

Mary was also confused and asked, "A check?"

"Yes, here it is, for ten million dollars," Emily took out the check and said, "He's trying to empty the Smith family in one go; what an ingrate."

Mary took a look and was stunned. "This isn't the Smith family's check."

"Isn't it from the Smith family?" Emily was at a loss, then stared at James and said, "Then he must have stolen it from somewhere else or found it on the street."

"What a greedy jerk!"

She looked at him with scorn, saying, "And a foolish one, too. Did you think you could just cash a check you found?"

Mary narrowed her eyes and asked, "James, what's going on here?"

"That's right, this check isn't from the Smith family, it's not stolen, and it's not found," James calmly met Mary's gaze and said, "This is a cashier's check from Jacob. I did him a favor, and he gave me ten million dollars as a reward."

"What kind of favor could a loser like you possibly do?" Emily sneered, "Who would give you ten million dollars? Jacob, more like Jacob the Fool..."

"What? Jacob?"

Emily's pretty face changed mid-sentence. "The chairman of the Davis Association?"

Gregory took a look at the check and said, "This is Mr. Davis's check. I can recognize his signature at a glance."

Mary also confirmed and said, "James indeed was a freind of Mr. Davis."

"You've got some nerve." Emily was shocked. "How dare you steal Mr. Davis's check?"

"I've said it; this is a fee from Jacob to me," James said calmly, "If you don't believe it, you can make a call to ask."

Gregory hesitated for a moment, then picked up the phone and made a call. Soon after, his face was embarrassed as he hung up.

He said, "Mr. Williams, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding."

"Please be magnanimous and forgive us."

Gregory forced a smile, having confirmed the check's authenticity.

"What?" Emily was shocked. "It's really ten million dollars from Mr. Davis to him? How is that possible?"

"How is it not possible?" Gregory sternly said, "Mr. Williams is a distinguished and talented man, and he has a deep relationship with Mr. Davis. A fee of ten million dollars is quite normal."

"This is absolutely impossible." Emily was desperate. She said, "How could such a freeloader befriend with Mr. Davis?"

"It must be a mistake."

She couldn't accept it and said, "Mr. Mitchell, you ask Mr. Davis again. He must be mistaken."

Mary stepped forward with a wry smile. "Emily, James does have a good relationship with Mr. Davis."

At the same time, she glared fiercely at James. He had promised her not to cash Jacob's check, yet here he was at the bank.

She would definitely deal with James when they got home.

"Forget it, Mary, don't make excuses for him. I know what James is made of," Emily interrupted Mary and looked back at Gregory, saying, "Mr. Mitchell, ask again."

Seeing Emily so certain and James dressed in cheap street clothes, Gregory hesitantly called Jacob again.

Quickly, his face turned ugly, undoubtedly scolded.

After hanging up, Gregory shouted at Emily, "Ms. Garcia, I'm ordering you to apologize to Mr. Williams right now."

Emily was momentarily dazed.

Could this be true?

Gregory demanded, "Did you hear me? Apologize."

Emily's pretty face changed drastically. In her eyes, James was nothing but a loser, and apologizing to such a man was hard for her to swallow. But seeing Gregory's stern gaze, she could only grudgingly say, "I'm sorry."

James said with a smile, "You mocked me, slandered me, and even called Mary here, and now you apologized so reluctantly?"

Emily's eyebrows shot up. She said, "James, don't push it too far."

Mary also softly said, "James, it's just a misunderstanding; let it go."

"If you don't admit your mistake, then you're fired," James said and looked at Gregory, "Keeping such an employee will only cause you trouble."

"You're quite confident," Emily sneered, "Fire me? Who do you think you are?"

Mary looked at James. Jacob might provide James with ten million dollars for his help, but he might not listen to his advice to pressure the bank.

Gregory was even more skeptical.

How could Jacob disrupt their cooperation because of James?

Most importantly,  the SH Corporation's funds, which accounted for ninety percent of the assets, were in Hundred Flowers Bank. The BH Bank only had a trivial part.

He could show Jacob proper respect, but not enough to fire a lobby.

Emily was a rich girl with a prominent background; the Garcia family's dealings with the BH Bank were no less than those with Jacob.

So he shrugged at James with a smile and said, "Mr. Williams, let's not go overboard. I can't fulfill your request."

"Do you think knowing Mr. Davis means you can do whatever you want?" Emily was even more smug upon hearing this. "James, you're too naive."

She added, "And let me tell you, Joseph is coming back in a few days, and I'll make sure he deals with you properly."

She suddenly became fierce and said, "I'll make you realize that I'm not someone you can mess with."

James smiled faintly. "I'm afraid you're the one who's naive."

"James, stop arguing with Emily. I'll go start the car, and we'll go home together." Mary glared at James and then turned to leave and start the car.

She knew Emily's connections. James wanting to fire her was completely wishful thinking.

James looked at Gregory with a smile and said, "It seems Mr. Davis's influence isn't enough."

Gregory laughed noncommittally. "Indeed, it's not enough."

Seeing James embarressed by the bank manager, the female employees either sneered or looked at each other and laughed, their expressions contemptuous, as if they thought James was too full of himself.

"Is this one enough?" James handed over a second check.

'HC TCM Clinic, fifty million dollars.'

Gregory's face changed.

"Still not enough? Then I'll add another one." James handed over a third check.

'Thousand Treasures Corporation, one hundred million dollars.'

Gregory nearly collapsed. He looked at James in disbelief, not expecting that he not only knew Jacob but was also on good terms with Mark and Raymond.

These were all major clients, with annual transactions of tens of billions of dollars.

James's ability to obtain such huge funds from them indicated that he had an extremely significant influence on them.

The next second, he slapped Emily aside and said, "Get out; you're fired."
