Chapter 268 Crisis
James wasn't really trying to cause trouble, he mainly just felt hungry.
Besides, whether the blind date would be successful was up to Mary. His interference wouldn't make any difference.
As James walked into the restaurant, Keith's phone rang. He picked it up and walked to the back door to answer it.
Addison's smile hadn't even faded when she saw James walk in.
"Damn! He followed us here." Addison's face instantly darkened. "How shameless can he be?"
She assumed James was here to ruin things for Mary.
Addison was genuinely angry.
Charles and Mary were also taken aback when they saw James, seemingly not expecting him to show up.
"Ridiculous!" Reese's face immediately darkened, "In such a high-end place, what's a driver doing here? Get him out."
She had a very low opinion of James, not only because he had stopped her and Juan from exchanging gifts in the car but also because he had left them midway to rescue someone who had fallen into the river.
This showed a complete lack of respect for them.
Moreover, when Juan drove back to Peach Blossom Villa No. 1, he wasn't familiar with the car and hit the guardrail a few times, scaring them both.
Although Addison and the others didn't say anything, Reese still blamed James for it.
Addison turned to look at the back door and saw that Keith was still on the phone. She quickly got up and blocked James as he walked over, "James, what's the point? You and Mary are divorced. Why are you still bothering her? Is it because you found out my Mary is making money and bought the Peach Blossom Villa No. 1, so now you have bad intentions again?"
"I'm telling you, don't even think about it." She spoke with conviction, "I won't let Mary get back together with you, and you better not think about ruining her blind date."
Ever since moving into Peach Blossom Villa No. 1, Addison had been mentioning it to everyone.
Reese was initially stunned by Addison's words, but then she understood after Addison whispered to her. She was instantly both shocked and angry, "Bastard, who let you in here? Don't ruin things for my Mary."
"Get out."She never expected that James was Mary's ex-husband, and she was extremely anxious.
She didn't know why the Smith Family had James pick them up yesterday, but she knew she had to get rid of James immediately.
If Keith saw James, Mary's ex-husband, it would definitely upset him, and today's blind date could fail.
She could made four million dollars in introduction fees, Reese couldn't let that go.
James looked at Addison and Reese and said calmly, "Don't block the way. I'm here to eat."
Reese was almost furious. "Stop pretending. This is the Red Maple Club. A meal here starts at $20,000. How can someone who lives off a woman afford to eat here?"
Addison, out of pride, hadn't told her about James's changes, so Reese still saw James as a freeloader.
A son-in-law who had been supported by the Smith Family for a year and then kicked out, living in his wife's house after marriage, how could he have money to eat here?
"James, can you be reasonable? Can't you stand to see Mary doing well?"Addison changed her strategy to persuasion, "And aren't you an expert? Go make your own fortune."
In the brief conversation earlier, Keith had clearly shown interest in Mary. With a little more time, it would work out between them.
So Addison couldn't let James ruin it, "I'm begging you, please leave."
Seeing Addison anxious, James smiled and just looked at Mary, who was watching the scene unfold.
Mary was cold, sipping her tea, completely indifferent to James.
"James, let me tell you, Mr. Morris is very powerful. If he finds out you're here causing trouble, you will be in danger, do you understand?" Seeing that James wasn't listening, Reese couldn't help but threaten him, "Leave while he's still on the phone."
Then she turned to scold Mary, "Mary, do you know what you're doing? Who let you bring this poor guy in? Never mind that this is a blind date, even the Red Maple Club requires a certain status to enter."
Reese was aggressive, she said to Mary, "We were able to come in entirely because of Mr. Morris. And you brought him in without permission. If Mr. Morris finds out, what can we do?"
Before Mary could speak, Addison took over the conversation, "Mary didn't bring James. I've been watching her."
Reese was stunned for a moment, then realized and snapped at James, "So you followed us here secretly? Didn't Addison and the others make it clear to you that you and Mary are different? Now you're not only clinging to Mary but also causing trouble in a place like this."
"Leave, leave now, and don't bring trouble to our family." She impatiently waved her hand to shoo James away.
James smiled indifferently, "This isn't your home. I can come here if I want, and you have no right to kick me out. Step aside. I'm here to eat."
He could tell that Mary wanted to get out of the blind date, but since Mary hadn't said anything, he didn't bother to make a fuss and just wanted to eat his meal.
Reese sneered, "Stop putting on airs and making a fool of yourself."
"If you weren't standing with us right now, the security would have already thrown you out." Reese was very annoyed by James's arrogance. She thought he had no real ability but acted as if he was the best in the world.
James said bluntly, "Get lost!"
"Bastard, how dare you?"Reese was furious, "I'll call security right now."
"I'm just here to eat, and you insist I'm causing trouble."James laughed, "Fine, then I'll show you what causing trouble looks like."
He turned to look at Mary. Mary had remained silent the whole time, watching him with an inscrutable expression.
"I'm about to leave now. If you want to continue with Keith, stay seated and continue your blind date. If you don't want to, then come with me, and you'll never see each other again."After saying this, James looked intently at Mary.
Mary looked at James but didn't respond.
Addison and the others wanted to speak but were stopped by Charles.
Seeing Mary remain motionless, James felt a pang in his heart. He had thought she would get up without hesitation, but she didn't move at all.
James instinctively reached out to grab her wrist.
Mary pulled back.
James grabbed her arm, trying to pull her up.
Mary's upper body swayed slightly, but she quickly steadied herself.
James clearly saw that Mary's left hand was gripping the edge of the table tightly, anchoring herself so he couldn't pull her away.
James was stunned and gave a self-deprecating smile.
He understood Mary now. She accepted this blind date, it was purely wishful thinking that he thought Mary was unwilling.
Her displeasure, disgust, and resistance to the blind date were likely just a show of modesty.
"Got it."James withdrew his hand and then nodded to Addison and the others, "Aunt Addison, I'm sorry for the disturbance."
He then turned and walked alone towards the door, coincidentally meeting Keith's gaze as he walked in.
Seeing the arrogant and disdainful look in Keith's eyes, James thought to himself, why should he blame Mary for her choice?
In terms of background, connections, and achievements, Keith was far superior to him.
Seeing James leave dejectedly, Addison and Reese were full of pride.
The Red Maple Club wasn't large, but its design was unique. It took James about ten minutes to reach the outside.
Outside was the river, vast and turbulent.
James walked along the deserted riverside road without an umbrella, letting the large raindrops pour down on his head.
He was soon drenched.
James didn't know what was wrong with him; he just felt a bit sad and hurt at the thought of Mary marrying another man in the future.
He had once thought he could handle the divorce gracefully and constantly reminded himself of Mary's bad temper, but he hadn't expected that a string in his heart was still attached.
This string tugged at his emotions and was connected to Mary.
In the rain, James suddenly stopped and laughed, "It's time to end this, time to say goodbye. She never liked me, let alone loved me. No matter how hard it is to let go, it's time to let go."
Unconsciously.
The rain seemed to have stopped.
However, the sound of rain persisted, and the river surface was still rippling.
James slowly looked up.
There was a semicircular arc, gathering raindrops into a few strands of water, gently falling.
It was an umbrella.
He jerked his head around.
Outside the umbrella was Mary, expressionless.
