Chapter 154 A Narrow Encounter with an Old Foe
Charles stared sharply at James's hand, worried that James might damage his General Jade.
James ignored him and continued examining the symbols and images, realizing they were far more valuable than the jade.
Then, he raised an eyebrow and saw through the reflection in the car window that two people were suspiciously watching them from behind.
Although he couldn't see their faces clearly, their build and behavior suggested they were up to no good.
James quickly guessed that Ellie had likely sent these two to keep an eye on them, indicating that the way back wouldn't be peaceful.
He didn't mind being watched but was concerned about Charles and Abigail's safety.
Seeing James remain silent, Charles urged again, "James, what are you standing there for? Give me my General Jade."
If he hadn't been worried about James dropping it, Charles would have snatched it by now.
Abigail smirked and provocatively said, "Dad, you didn't admit to breaking the porcelain, didn't pay for the fragments, and didn't discover the secret of the base."
She continued, "Now claiming the General Jade is yours is quite unreasonable."
Abigail coveted the General Jade but knew she couldn't get it, so she decided to make things difficult for James.
No matter how capable James was, he couldn't upset his father-in-law.
Charles was momentarily speechless, then angrily said, "Stop talking nonsense. After all, it started because of me. Without me, there wouldn't be this jade."
"Five million, no problem. I'll pay James back when we get back. No, I'll give him ten million, double the profit, okay?"
"Besides, he's living with his wife's family after marriage. I'm his father-in-law. What's wrong with him giving me a piece of jade?"
Charles was very unhappy. 'What's yours and mine? A son-in-law living with his wife's family has no rights. Good things should be handed over promptly.'
"Dad, I'm sorry, but I have important use for this jade." James chuckled, "You like blood jade. I can find you a few pieces later."
He initially wanted to say that since Charles liked money, he could give him three million, but the General Jade had a significant purpose for James.
After a few days of nurturing, the General Jade would become a talisman to ward off evil.
It would eliminate all the bad luck and negative energy.
This way, James would have another powerful tool.
"Can't give it to me?" Hearing James's words, Charles got angry. "This is something I found, and you want to keep it for yourself? Doesn't your conscience hurt?"
James smiled wryly. "Dad, I really have important use for this jade."
He glanced at the glass again and saw the two people still watching.
"Important use? What important use?" Charles was very angry. "You won't even take one million? Aren't you just greedy for three million?"
"I was happy a few days ago thinking you had changed, but I didn't expect you to be so greedy and shameless. I really overestimated you. Your mom was right; you have no sense of humanity."
He had already considered the General his, and James's actions made him furious.
"Fine, the jade is yours. For Mary's sake, I won't fight for it. Can I at least borrow it for a few days?"
Charles pretended to compromise but planned not to return it once he got it.
He didn't believe James would dare to confront him.
James shook his head without hesitation. "Dad, I really can't give you the jade. You should go back; I have things to do."
He knew that if Charles took the General, it would bring disaster.
The two people watching were definitely after the General Jade.
"Haha, you can't even let me see it for a couple of days? Are you worried I'll keep it? You think so little of me."
Charles was furious, glaring at James, and couldn't believe James was so unfeeling. He pointed at James and sneered, "I had a new level of respect for you last night, but now I see you're just arrogant when you succeed. James, I'm so disappointed in you, so disappointed."
He scolded James and then stormed off in anger.
"Dad." Abigail hurried after him, not forgetting to shout at James, "Jerk, is this how you treat your father-in-law? Look how angry you've made him. Wait till I tell Mom and Mary and get you kicked out of the Smith Family."
James smiled indifferently, thinking that things were about to get chaotic again.
But he didn't care. His relationship with Mary was already strained, so he didn't mind more anger from the Smith Family.
He glanced at the glass again and saw the two people hadn't followed Charles.
This made James breathe a sigh of relief.
Then, James got in his car and headed straight for Cloud Top Mountain.
The mountain was high and forested, a perfect place for murder.
As James expected, the General Jade had attracted attention.
As soon as the Audi left the antique market, James noticed someone following him.
A black SUV was tailing him closely, brazenly, with undisguised murderous intent, as if to announce they were following him.
James smiled faintly and stepped on the gas.
The Audi sped off instantly.
The black SUV hesitated for a moment, then accelerated to catch up, sticking to James's taillights.
James abandoned the bustling main road and headed directly for Cloud Top Mountain, taking the same route as last time.
The black SUV didn't notice and kept following James, not giving him a chance to escape.
In no time, the two cars entered the gloomy midsection of Cloud Top Mountain.
Ten minutes later, the Audi arrived at the spot where James had previously fallen off the cliff.
James braked, opened the car door, and got out.
Almost immediately, the black SUV rushed over and stopped in front of James.
Seeing James lazily leaning against the car, the people in the SUV knew their cover was blown and grudgingly acknowledged James's capability.
But they didn't care. The car doors opened, and three men and one woman got out.
They all carried fire axes.
Though they varied in size and height, they all had the same ruthless aura.
They were clearly people who had seen blood and killed before.
Leading them was a middle-aged fat man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing over 200 pounds, exuding hostility.
He looked at James and sneered, "Kid, you sure know how to pick a place. Secluded and quiet, perfect for a burial."
He clicked his tongue. "I'll make sure to find you a good spot."
James said calmly, "Aren't you here to steal the General Jade? Why kill?"
"We'll take the jade and kill you too." The middle-aged fat man chuckled. "No choice, we midnight killers never leave witnesses."
'Midnight killers?'
James squinted slightly, then smiled faintly. "Escaped from Bryan Watson's base, and instead of cherishing your life, you come out to die?"
