Chapter 215 Charles's Ambition
"The Smith family’s in deep shit?"
James was floored and blurted out, "What the hell happened?"
"It’s Damon and John," Kaitlyn said, all flustered. "They splashed blood on my front door, tossed a bunch of dead cats, and even killed the Smiths' dog."
"My folks got hit by their car while driving, almost caused a major wreck."
"My big sis and her hubby got jumped by some dudes in burlap sacks."
"When I heard the news, I rushed back. As I was getting home, someone tried to snatch me, but thank God the security guard stepped in."
"Damon had Sophie pass a message, telling me to meet him at the Four Seasons Hotel tomorrow night. If I don’t, they’ll keep messing with my family, causing car crashes for my parents and sister. And they’re coming for you too. They said they wanna break your arms and legs to blow off steam."
"James, what did you do to piss them off so bad yesterday?"
She was sharp and knew just getting John drunk wouldn’t lead to this mess; something else must’ve gone down after she left.
James thought about Damon and John's antics and smirked. "Nothing major, they probably got wasted and felt humiliated, so now they want payback."
James then switched gears. "Don’t sweat it, I'll end what I started. I’ll handle it right away. But you should lay low for a few days. Since you’re back at the Smiths', stay put for a bit."
Even though he knew Damon and John would be pissed, he didn’t think they’d go this low against the Smiths.
James didn’t care much for the Smiths and even thought it was good for them to get a taste of trouble, but he knew he had to fix this to keep Kaitlyn safe.
Kaitlyn nodded like crazy. "I trust you."
"James, listen, you shouldn’t go out for the next few days either. Close the clinic and find a safe spot. Damon and his crew won’t stick around Rosewood City for long."
She advised James, "After a while, things will cool down."
Before she could finish, Addison’s angry voice came through the phone.
"Kaitlyn, who are you talking to? Is it that jerk?"
"That bastard, after causing us so much trouble, still has the nerve to call and mess with you?"
"Tell him to go to hell."
Then the call cut off.
James looked at his phone and sighed, then his eyes narrowed. Damon really didn’t know his place.
"James, what’s up?"
Nathaniel, who’d been watching James, handed change to a patient and took a sec to shout, "Did you have a run-in with Damon and his crew?"
Even though he hadn’t been eavesdropping, he heard Kaitlyn mention Damon a bunch of times.
James didn’t hide it and nodded. "Just a minor thing. He can’t handle it and is messing with the Smiths."
"James, let me take care of this."
Nathaniel, always ready to prove himself, slapped his thigh. "I’ve got connections with Damon. Let me handle it. Give me a day, and I promise he won’t bother the Smiths anymore."
Nathaniel’s face was full of confidence.
"You?"
James’s eyes showed doubt, but then he remembered Nathaniel knew Sophie, so it made sense he had ties with Damon’s crew.
"Alright, I'll leave it to you," James said, giving Nathaniel the green light.
If this could be sorted out without more drama, James was all for it. "Just make sure they get the message to back off the Smith family."
Nathaniel was pumped. "Don't worry, James, I got this."
Seeing Nathaniel so confident, James decided to chill. Just then, his phone buzzed.
After a quick chat, he headed straight to the Miller family.
Brandon had woken up, and David had called James to check on him.
As the sun started to set, James finished a round of acupuncture on Brandon in the Miller family's backyard pavilion and had him down a big bowl of medicine.
After the treatment, Brandon looked way better. His cough was gone, and he was breathing easy.
If it weren’t for the wound near his heart, Brandon would’ve been ready to hit the gym.
"James, I really owe you."
Brandon personally brewed some fancy tea for James. As soon as he poured it, the pavilion was filled with its aroma.
With Cloud Top Mountain in the distance, the scene was pretty damn picturesque.
"Mr. Miller, you're too kind. Saving lives is my job," James said, keeping it humble. "Besides, you trusted me with your life. How could I let you down?"
"Well said, well said." Brandon didn’t hide his admiration. "At your age, with your skills, and yet so humble, it’s truly rare."
He genuinely liked James more and more. If he had a granddaughter, he’d probably want James in the family.
James smiled. "Thanks for the compliment, Mr. Miller."
Brandon suddenly switched gears. "James, got any plans for the future?"
Without missing a beat, James replied, "Practice medicine, save lives, make some cash, and live a chill life."
Brandon was taken aback, then laughed. "With all your skills, that’s all you want?"
"Without ambition, there's no greed. Without greed, there's no fear of loss," James said with a grin. "This is the life I’ve wanted since I was six. Now that I can have it, I’m grateful. No bigger dreams for now."
Brandon was surprised. He didn’t expect James to say that, or to have such a mindset.
These days, any young person with some skills was usually cocky and hungry for attention.
Even those who acted humble were just showing off in another way.
But with James, there was no BS. What had this young guy gone through to be so chill?
"James, I dare say, you’re gonna be very successful." Brandon gave James a firm pat on the shoulder. "You’re a hundred times more capable than your ex-father-in-law."
"Charles?" James was a bit surprised. "Was he really that ambitious?"
James’s view of Charles was that he was mediocre, henpecked, and vain. To put it bluntly, just a bit better than useless.
James had never seen any ambition in him.
"See that?"
Brandon didn’t answer directly but pointed to Cloud Top Mountain.
James was puzzled. "Cloud Top Mountain?"
"That’s Charles’s ambition."
Brandon stood up and waved his hand. "If it weren’t for an unexpected event, it would’ve been the landmark of Rosewood City."
James’s wrist trembled, spilling his tea.
