Chapter 239 About to Lose
Michelle wanted to invite Olivia out for dinner, but when she called, Olivia turned her down and suggested they reschedule. Just as Michelle was about to hang up, she thought she heard a scream on the other end. Worried, she called James.
James tried to calm Michelle down and then called Olivia to find out where she was, but he couldn't get through. With no other options, he reached out to Jonathan.
As soon as Jonathan picked up, he greeted James with a respectful, "Good evening, James!"
James didn't waste any time. "I can't reach Olivia. I need to see her right now. Can you help?"
Jonathan hesitated. "James, Miss Lee has something going on tonight. Maybe try her later?"
"So, you know where she is," James said calmly. "Just give me the address, and I'll go find her."
Jonathan hesitated again. "James..."
James cut him off. "Don't give me that. I know she's in trouble. I need to see her now."
Jonathan gritted his teeth. "Alright, James. I'll send a car to pick you up."
Half an hour later, a black Mercedes pulled up at JZL Medical Clinic. As James was about to get in, Francis silently followed.
James was surprised. "Why are you coming? You should stay and rest."
Francis replied coldly, "It's dangerous. I need to protect you."
It was clear Francis knew James was heading into danger and was determined to stick by him.
James smiled. "Don't worry, I can handle myself. You should rest."
Francis shook his head firmly.
"Alright, let's go together then," James said, giving in. "But you'd better wear a mask."
Francis put on a mask without hesitation.
The Mercedes sped away from JZL Medical Clinic and, half an hour later, stopped in front of a nondescript gray building where dozens of luxury cars were parked and Jonathan was already waiting.
Seeing Francis with James, Jonathan was surprised but quickly greeted James respectfully.
Jonathan was full of gratitude towards James. Without him, he wouldn't have become a key figure in WH Group.
"Where's Olivia?" James asked directly. "What happened tonight?"
"Miss Lee and the others are at Taiping Boxing Arena," Jonathan said, not hiding anything. "Miss Lee is safe."
James instinctively asked, "Is this about Bryan?"
He slapped his forehead, remembering Olivia had mentioned that the Rosewood City circle was planning a big fight with Bryan to decide if he could come back.
Jonathan nodded repeatedly. "Yeah, that's the fight."
James pressed on. "What's the situation now?"
Jonathan looked troubled. "Not good."
James narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean?"
Jonathan didn't hold back. "Larry was killed, which implicates you, and by extension, Mr. Davis and the Mystic Alliance."
"Headquarters confined Mr. Davis for the investigation, strictly forbidding the Rosewood City Mystic Alliance from intervening. This left both Mr. Davis and the four heads of the houses unable to directly engage in the conflict." He sighed. "Our strongest cards have been rendered useless."
James narrowed his eyes. "That's favoritism."
Richard, as a representative of the Mystic Alliance, was the backbone of Rosewood City's force. Not allowing Rosewood City to use these people was like tying the hands of the Mystic Alliance.
At the same time, James felt a twinge of guilt. He bore some responsibility. If he hadn't pushed Larry too hard, Richard and the others wouldn't be suffering.
"It is favoritism, but there's nothing we can do. Mr. Davis is in Stardust City, and the Elder Council is strong. The four major leaders can't do much." Jonathan shook his head lightly. "We could only hire a group of strong fighters at a high price."
James said, "These fighters are quite powerful, several of them are at the peak of the lower level, but we didn't expect Bryan to bring in Leopold, a disciple of Maximilian."
"He's a top-notch hitman, at the peak of the intermediate level, just a step away from the advanced level." Jonathan looked helpless. "Our strong fighters can't compete with him."
"What about your own strong fighters?" James asked again. "In such critical times, why aren't you using them?"
He knew that whether it was Raymond, Aaron, or Andrew, they all had powerful ultimate bodyguards.
"They're all wiped out." Jonathan sighed. "We heard Bryan hired Leopold. Figured we'd eliminate Leopold before the fight. Less variables that way. So, each family sent two strong fighters to ambush Leopold when he arrived in Rosewood City. But we didn't expect someone to leak the information. All twelve strong fighters were ambushed and killed."
Jonathan revealed a self-deprecating smile. "The losses are even greater."
James frowned slightly. "It seems your manpower is indeed weak."
He developed a bit of interest in Bryan. This guy was quite slick; he hadn't even shown up yet and had already caused Rosewood City to suffer.
Leopold's whereabouts being leaked might have been Bryan's deliberate move to eliminate Rosewood City's effective forces.
"It's not looking good," Jonathan exhaled a long breath. "The strong fighters we hired were slaughtered by Leopold like cutting through butter."
"He almost took down one of our strong fighters with each strike, killing all five of them," Jonathan sighed sadly. "This fight is likely to end badly."
There was still a glimmer of hope, though—Raymond's trump card, Tyler. But using him would subject The Clark Family to everyone's criticism. After all, Tyler wasn't someone who could be publicly known.
James looked ahead. "Take me to see."
Jonathan was stunned and hesitated. "James, Miss Lee has ordered that you not get involved."
"Cut the crap!" James snorted. "I don't want to get involved in your affairs, but I can't just watch you lose miserably."
"Besides, I'm just going to take a look, to see for myself. I didn't say I would intervene." James impatiently waved his hand. "Take me there quickly."
He was already tied to Raymond and Olivia, so how could he ignore tonight's events?
Jonathan wanted to say more, but James's glare made him shiver. He pointed with his hand, "Right this way, right this way."
James led Francis inside.
They walked into the gray building, through the lobby, to the end, and then took an elevator down to the third basement level. They emerged into a long marble corridor.
After passing through the corridor and three iron gates, they entered the center of the underground structure, a circular hall fifty feet in diameter and two stories high.
The top was a transparent glass dome, and in the center of the hall, the focal point of the building, stood a four-foot-high international standard platform.
The stands were filled with wide sofas, each with a marble coffee table in front of it, complete with fruit platters and drinks. There were nearly a hundred seats.
Clearly, not just anyone could enter here.
James quickly spotted Olivia in the crowd.
She was dressed in red, with her hair up, wearing stockings and long legs, looking exquisite and fashionable.
She sat on the left front sofa, surrounded by Raymond, Andrew, Aaron, Bruce, and Taylor.
Dozens of people were protecting her closely.
However, the usually composed big shots had a hint of seriousness on their faces tonight.
To their right was a young man in his late twenties with white hair, looking sinister but with a bright smile that sent chills down one's spine.
The young man also had a team of subordinates behind him, all of them looking competent.
The two sides were close but separated, with a strong sense of hostility in the air.
James guessed that the white-haired young man was probably Bryan's son, Neil.
He also noticed a dozen or so men and women in the audience, all dressed in luxurious clothes, clearly here to watch the fight. But the most eye-catching was a young girl in Floral Elegance top, black skirt, knee-high stockings, and leather boots. She exuded arrogance, with a haughty smile, seemingly disdainful of everyone present. She was accompanied by two men and a woman—one in a suit, one in a black vest, and one in a dress—all of them exuding an air of significance.
"James, the situation is very bad," Jonathan spoke in a low voice, glancing ahead. "Neil's side still has ten people, including Leopold, but we only have five left."
James said calmly, "The gap is quite large."
He glanced at Francis, who looked indifferent, showing no interest in the battlefield.
"The sixth match is starting," the host announced, his voice very enthusiastic. "Welcome Rosewood City, Maurice."
The host dragged out the last syllable, making it sound powerful and prolonged. The audience's applause, cheers, and whistles erupted instantly.
With a flash of lights, a man walked out with firm steps. He had a large head, stood 6 feet 2 inches tall, wore a hat, and had muscles like a bulldozer, evenly distributed across his body. He held two axes in his hands, swinging them with a fierce wind, exuding an impressive aura. Just his size and physique made him a very dangerous opponent.
James saw Olivia smile, looking more relaxed, clearly confident in Maurice.
"This is the headliner, Maurice," Jonathan explained. "He has immense strength and is impervious to weapons. He once single-handedly took down a hundred armed bandits. He was supposed to be the last to appear, but everyone was worried about morale and wanted to turn the tide, so they sent him out now."
At this moment, the host shouted again, "Welcome The Bennett Group, Leopold."
With the announcement of this name, a young man with a straight posture also stepped onto the platform.
He held an exquisite sword with a diamond-encrusted hilt, looking dazzling and proud.
When he and Maurice stood on the platform together, the scene looked very discordant, but it drove the crowd into a frenzy.
"Leopold!" The girl in Floral Elegance screamed excitedly, her pretty face showing the madness of a fan.
James observed the two for a moment, then shook his head and sighed, "We're going to lose."
