Chapter 209 No Going Home Until We're Drunk
Damon and John were gawking at James, their jaws practically on the floor. They couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that James had just raked in ten billion dollars.
Kaitlyn was just as floored, totally blown away by James's sudden windfall.
James didn't even need to check his phone to know it was from the raw stones. He hadn't hit up Sebastian or even mentioned those stones lately, but he knew Sebastian wouldn't just ghost him. James just didn't expect Sebastian to drop ten billion dollars today, almost top dollar for that batch. This caught James off guard and made him appreciate Sebastian's straight-up honesty, especially since he hadn't even fronted the initial eight hundred million dollars.
"Ten billion dollars? No freakin' way."
While Damon and the crew were squirming, Sophie, who knew the real deal, decided to stir the pot.
"You are only hustling with a voice app, aren't you? With a tiny clinic, where'd you get ten billion dollars?"
"If you were really all that, you wouldn't be shacking up with the Smith Family as a live-in son-in-law."
Damon and the others, who had been floored a second ago, realized they had been played by James after hearing this. A doc running a small clinic, who had been a live-in son-in-law, how could he possibly have that kind of moeny?
"I knew it, wearing those cheap threads, how could he have ten billion dollars?"
"So it was a fake voice, you're really full of it, making Kaitlyn look bad."
"Yeah, look at you, pretending to be some rich kid, have you even seen a million dollars?"
"Someone who buys clothes from street vendors, and you dare to talk big like that?"
"Mr. Bell and Mr. Perez are just messing with you, and you really think you're a big shot?"
Damon and John started getting all riled up, roasting James without mercy, their words cutting deep. They almost got played by this broke dude.
James watched them go off with a smirk.
"Shut up!" Kaitlyn yelled, "That's enough. He's not lying to you; he really has ten billion dollars."
She shouted, "He can earn enough money for an Audi just by treating one patient."
John and the others cracked up at this. 'Earning enough money for an Audi by treating a patient?' That was the kind of cash top docs in Rosewood City could make, how could James, so young, pull that off?
"Alright, give Kaitlyn a break; stop ragging on James, even broke guys need some dignity."
As Kaitlyn was about to blow up, Sophie quickly shut down the laughter. "Kaitlyn hasn't eaten yet. Let's chat while we eat."
Damon slipped back into his gentleman act. "I've got this courtyard reserved, order whatever you want to eat and drink, we ain't leaving until we're hammered."
Sophie and the others cheered, dragging Kaitlyn along, following Damon to the long dining table.
John hung back a bit.
"James, right? Let me clue you in, Mr. Bell's got his eye on Kaitlyn. Whether you're her real boyfriend or just a placeholder, you'd better bounce. If you leave now, I can put in a good word with Mr. Bell and pretend this never happened."
John cracked his neck, glaring at James. "Otherwise, you're gonna regret it."
James grinned, unfazed. "Really? Regret? How so?"
"I don't roll into Rosewood City often, but it doesn't matter." John sneered, "Ray from the Garcia Group in Rosewood City is my uncle. With just one word, he can have you taken out."
He threatened slowly.
"Ray?" James chuckled, then said calmly, "Alright, have him come and break my limbs."
John was taken aback, not expecting that from James. 'That's Ray I am talking about!'
"Do you know Ray?" He couldn't help but remind, "A big shot worth billions."
James grinned. "Go ahead, bring him on."
"Bold move!" John sneered, giving James a sarcastic thumbs up. "Fine, you wanna play with fire? I'll make sure you get burned."
Seeing James totally unfazed, John added, "I'll make you wish you were never born."
John might not have the clout Damon had, but he was still not someone to mess with. There would be endless trouble for anyone who crossed him.
A few socialites nearby watched with smug smiles. Compared to John and Damon, James was a nobody. They figured the real show was about to start.
Despite the tension, they all sat down to eat, mostly because of Kaitlyn. James sat next to her, tuning out the drama.
The food came out fast, and Damon made a big show of bringing out six cases of Bordeaux wine. Thirty-six bottles in total, and he popped them all at once, filling the air with the rich aroma of wine.
Damon shot a look at John, then grabbed a bottle and started pouring everyone a hefty glass.
"I don't drink, thanks," Kaitlyn said, covering her glass. "I'll just have some juice."
After the last bar fiasco, she decided to steer clear of alcohol when out.
"Miss Smith, it's a rare chance that we get together like this," John laughed. "On such a happy occasion, drinking juice is kinda lame. And this is fresh Bordeaux, top-notch stuff, twenty grand a bottle. If you don't try it, you'll regret it. Come on, just one glass."
He cheerfully poured a big glass for Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn shook her head. "I really can't drink."
"Kaitlyn, don't be a buzzkill; just have a little. It's really good wine."
"Yeah, show some respect to Mr. Bell and Mr. Perez."
"They came all the way from Stardust City, and you're a local. Not drinking is kinda rude."
Sophie and the others chimed in, pushing Kaitlyn to drink.
Kaitlyn stayed firm.
Damon smiled. "Kaitlyn, are you still mad about us giving your brother-in-law a hard time earlier?"
Kaitlyn shot back bluntly, "Yes."
Damon squinted slightly, not expecting her to be so tough, then he smiled again. He looked at James and said with a grin:
"James, we were out of line earlier, shouldn't have messed with you. My bad." He gave a mock bow to James, then switched his tone. "But on such a happy day, shouldn't we have a good drink? And the wine's already open, it'd be a shame to waste it."
He pointed to the open bottles.
James smiled faintly. "You're right, we should drink on a happy day. But Kaitlyn's allergic to alcohol, so let's not push her. I'll drink for her."
John's face darkened, about to snap, 'Who do you think you are?' but Damon shot him a look, and he got the message.
John grinned widely. "Alright, alright, since you're Kaitlyn's boyfriend, it's your job to drink for her."
"Come on, let's drink."
He picked up his glass.
Kaitlyn stepped on James's foot under the table, signaling him not to fall for it. She could tell John and the others were up to no good.
James didn't flinch, just laughed heartily. "Let's drink."
He downed his glass of red wine in one go.
"Mr. Williams, you're a real sport!" Damon shouted excitedly, also downing his glass. Meanwhile, he was sneering inside, 'What an idiot, once you're drunk, I'll have all the time in the world with Kaitlyn.'
"Come on, fill it up."
He signaled Sophie to refill James's glass, then stood up and said, "Mr. Williams, I toast to you again. We had beef, but we got to know each other."
"Alright." James didn't hesitate, clinking glasses with Damon and downing it in one go.
