Chapter 117 Who Exactly Saved the Person

After escaping from Katherine's office, James glanced at the inpatient department across the way.

He knew Mary hadn't been discharged yet, so he decided to go check on her. After all, they weren't divorced yet, and he couldn't just ignore her.

When he arrived at Room 8, the door was unlocked. Just as James was about to push it open, he saw a man in a crisp shirt sitting next to Mary's bed.

He didn't need to see the man's face to know it was Joseph.

Opposite him sat Mary. They weren't exactly laughing and chatting, but they were in constant conversation, discussing the characteristics and details of several mutual clients.

Mary asked, and Joseph answered. They were very much in sync. At first glance, they seemed like a perfect match.

From James's angle, he could see half of Mary's pretty face.

She didn't have her usual aloofness. Instead, she wore a faint smile that exuded an indescribable sense of ease and warmth.

James felt inexplicably irritated. Just as he was about to knock and enter, he heard a thud as Joseph dropped to one knee.

"Mary, I can't control it anymore. I really like you. Please agree to marry me. If not, at least be my girlfriend. I can offer you many resources, and only I can help you this way. James could never ease your burdens."

"I swear by God. Mary, I will take good care of you and give you the greatest happiness."

Mary shrank back a bit. "Joseph, I'm sorry, don't do this. I'm still James's wife, and I don't have feelings for you. I'm very grateful for your help and for saving me from Jesse, but I'm sorry."

Her tone was firm. "I don't see us in that way."

Joseph called out, "Mary."

Joseph hadn't expected that even after saying so much, Mary would remain unmoved.

Feeling a surge of emotion, he placed his hands on the edge of the bed and leaned in to kiss Mary's bright red lips.

He told himself that Mary was just pretending.

He knew all too well how much she valued fame and fortune. Otherwise, she wouldn't keep pestering him to introduce clients to her or trying to squeeze into his social circle.

Wealth, glory, and access to the powerful - all of these, only he could give her.

She had no reason to stay with someone as useless as James, so Mary's current restraint was just a pretense.

But before he could touch Mary, she kicked him away.

Joseph flailed and fell to the ground with a thud.

"Joseph, stop it." Mary jumped off the bed. "If you keep this up, we can't even be friends."

In the past, she might have slapped him twice, but remembering that Joseph had saved her, she suppressed her anger.

Joseph clenched his fists in anger, his eyes filled with resentment and confusion. He wanted to pin Mary down and have his way with her.

But he knew that if he did, he would lose Mary completely, and he didn't want a soulless body.

So Joseph took a deep breath and slowly regained his composure, returning to his usual gentlemanly demeanor.

"Mary, I'm sorry. I love you too much. I just lost control for a moment. I'm really sorry."

Joseph bowed in apology, trying to appear as sincere as possible.

"Lost control? Why don't you go kiss Emily?" James coldly pushed open the door, glaring at Joseph. "Messing with someone else's wife can get you killed."

"James!"

Seeing James appear, Mary shivered and instinctively called out.

James glanced at Mary, then looked at Joseph and said, "This is the last time. If I catch you harassing Mary again, I'll kill you!"

"Do you want to kill me? Who do you think you are?" Joseph didn't get angry. He just sneered provocatively. "Take good care of Mary. If anything happens to her, you'll regret it."

James suddenly kicked Joseph, sending him sprawling to the ground. "It's none of your concern!"

Joseph's face twisted with a mixture of pain and satisfaction. He spat out, "Mary is mine, and mine alone! You, just a freeloader, have no right to vie with me for Mary. Dare to lay a finger on me, and I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life behind bars."

Joseph's emotions erupted. After the failed proposal, being scammed out of one million dollars, and Mary's rejection today, he was furious.

Mary was supposed to be his, but James was the obstacle keeping his dream girl away.

James didn't waste words and kicked Joseph again.

Seeing this, Mary shivered and quickly stepped in front of Joseph, her voice filled with urgency and panic. "James, don't be foolish. If you hurt him, you will end up in jail!"

She almost raised her hand to slap James, but fortunately, she managed to restrain herself just in time.

James's voice turned cold. "Why are you protecting this scumbag?"

"Joseph was wrong, but you can't resort to violence. You could end up in jail," Mary advised earnestly, her eyes welling up with tears, her heart heavy with worry. "James, can't you just calm down and keep quiet, please? Besides, Joseph once saved me. If it wasn't for him, I would be dead by now."

She didn't want to bring up that night, fearing it would hurt both herself and James.

James looked at Joseph with a mocking smile. "So I should thank him?"

"Joseph."

At that moment, the door opened again, and Charles, Addison, and Emily appeared.

Isabella was also there. Seeing James, she hesitated, her face showing a hint of discomfort.

Seeing Joseph on the ground, Emily screamed and rushed in, helping Joseph up while yelling at James, "James, why did you hit Joseph? Is hitting people the only thing you're good at?"

Emily was furious. "If you're so capable, go hit Jesse and his gang."

"James, what are you doing?" Addison was also enraged. "It's bad enough you're useless. How could you hit Joseph? He saved Mary."

Charles didn't say anything, but his gaze at James was more profound.

Mary quickly intervened, "Mom, don't bring it up again."

"We must talk about it." James's eyes lit up, "Let Joseph stand up and guarantee it. Let's see if he really saved Mary."

"If it wasn't Joseph, then who? You?" Addison's face turned angry. "Do you want to completely embarrass yourself?"

James replied decisively, "Yes."

Charles coughed, "James, sometimes it's better to be a little confused. It gives you a way out."

James was blunt. "I don't need it."

"James, it's over. I don't blame you." Mary was getting angry. "Don't bring it up again."

"Fine, for Mary's sake, I won't mention it." Emily scoffed, "Otherwise, I'll expose your hypocritical face."

Joseph didn't say anything, but his expression was quite interesting.

"James, for Mary's sake, I won't hold this against you, but don't let your jealousy lead you to ungrateful actions," Addison spoke with authority. "Apologize to Joseph now, and we'll let this matter rest. Your father and I won't bring it up again."

Charles echoed Addison's words. "James, preserve some dignity for yourself."

James ignored them and looked at Mary. "Do you also believe Joseph saved you?"

"James, don't be like this," Mary pleaded, wanting to spare James some dignity as well as to forget his moment of weakness as soon as possible. But James seemed to be dwelling on the matter.

She felt a wave of helplessness.

"Isabella," James called to Isabella, who was lingering at the door. "Come in."
