Chapter 260 Sleepless Night

Mary woke up on the way and flat-out refused to go to the hospital, and she didn't want James to tell Addison either.

She asked James to take her back to The Smith Family villa instead.

She didn't dwell on what went down at The Bennett Garden or how they managed to get out. As long as they were safe, she was good.

Seeing she was okay, James agreed and took her back to The Smith Family.

Kaitlyn had gone to Peach Blossom Villa No. 1 to shoot a video, so it was just James and Mary at the villa.

Back at the familiar place, James felt like it had been ages since he left, feeling a bit awkward.

Mary left James behind and painfully took a shower to wash off the dirt.

When she came out drying her hair, she heard footsteps outside. Soon, James showed up at the door.

Mary glanced at James. He had just showered too, his hair still wet, wearing shorts and a T-shirt he hadn't changed out of.

He wasn't classically handsome, but his features were sharp and appealing. He wasn't muscular, more on the lean side, but that just added to his clean-cut look. She used to see James as full of flaws, but now she found him kinda pleasing to the eye.

She was just a bit nervous about him coming into the bedroom.

A man and a woman alone at this moment, and she no longer resisted. Mary felt a bit flustered.

More importantly, the perfectionist in her saw her swollen face in the mirror, and she found herself awkward and ugly.

"I heated a cup of milk for you," James said with a faint smile, seeing her flickering gaze. "Drink it while it's hot, and you can have a good sleep."

Mary's face turned red, and she felt a faint pain. "Thank you."

Turned out James had no other thoughts.

James put the milk on the table. "I'll go back to JZL Medical Clinic. Call me if you need anything."

Mary blurted out, "Don't go."

James was taken aback. "What's wrong?"

Mary, rarely showing weakness, said, "I'm scared."

James saw that she wasn't pretending. "Alright, I'll stay at the villa tonight. You sleep, I'll go downstairs."

"Come in!" Mary didn't know what came over her, but she silently grabbed James's hand. "Don't go downstairs, stay in this suite."

James was no longer the one who used to annoy her. His presence gave her an indescribable sense of security.

James was slightly stunned, looking at the hand holding his, finding it hard to believe.

This was the first time Mary had asked him to stay.

While he was touched by Mary, he was also extremely fearful, afraid that it was all a dream and that things would return to the way they were after the emotional wave passed.

He didn't dare to easily fall into this whirlpool again.

The year after their marriage, the psychological contempt, humiliation, and compromise were still fresh in his memory.

How could someone quickly fall in love with someone they once hated? It was nothing more than gratitude for his desperate efforts.

What James least wanted was for Mary to feel grateful to him, so he quickly regained his composure and treated her like a friend.

"Alright, just like before, you sleep inside, and I'll sleep on the couch." James didn't say much more and settled down after a bit of tidying up.

Mary gave James an air conditioner blanket and then went back to the inner room with a satisfied smile.

"James, thank you for tonight, for risking your life to save me." Lying in bed, Mary looked at the slightly open door. "If it weren't for you, I don't know what would have happened."

She had just been taken to The Bennett villa when James, along with Francis, stormed in, saving her from all the torture and humiliation.

"You're welcome. I would have done the same for anyone else," James's voice drifted in. "Besides, it all started because of me, so I naturally had to end it."

Mary's eyebrows shot up, slightly annoyed at James for ruining the mood. "No matter what, I have to thank you. How should I repay you?"

"Really, there's no need," James yawned. "Alright, let's not talk about it. I'm exhausted from today. I'm going to bed."

Mary originally thought James was just making excuses, but after a while, she really heard the sound of him snoring.

She was stunned for a moment, not expecting James to actually fall asleep after she showed some goodwill.

"What a jerk," Mary muttered, feeling her gums itch with the urge to rush out and pinch James's face.

She could tell that even though James risked his life to save her, his feelings for her had changed since they were married.

He still had a place for her in his heart, but she wasn't the only one anymore. Clearly, Olivia was in his heart too.

Mary thought silently, feeling a bit angry. So many suitors had been rejected by her countless times, but their attitudes towards her never changed.

She snorted to herself, "Men are so fickle."

Meanwhile, in a luxury mansion several miles away, a group of well-dressed men and women were lounging on the sofa, chatting.

Leila, Eugene, Lucy, and Keith were all there.

Handsome men and beautiful women, along with fine wine and food, made for a very pleasing scene.

They occasionally discussed various topics, like domestic situations and international policies, analyzing them thoroughly, which earned the admiration of several women.

Lucy, however, wasn't interested in these topics. She took a moment to grab Eugene and asked, "Eugene, you said yesterday that Neil would deal with James and Francis today? And he even brought in Goldenspire, The Shadow Triad, and Thunder to back him up?"

She pressed further, "What's the situation now?"

"That's right," Eugene said, holding a beautiful woman and smiling. "Around four in the afternoon, just before they set out, Neil called to inform me. He asked me to give the police a heads-up, to avoid sending officers to Main Street for the next half day. He said he mobilized over two hundred elite members, with Sadie leading the charge against James and Francis. Oh, and Montgomery also went. She's an even more formidable hitman than Leopold. With so many people and such strength, James and Francis are undoubtedly doomed."

He took a big sip of red wine, his smile brimming with confidence.

Although he had been busy since receiving the call and only came out half an hour ago, without getting timely updates, he believed James would be in trouble.

Neil had many strong fighters; what could James possibly use to counter them?

Hearing Eugene's words, Lucy excitedly pumped her fist. "Well, I hate that arrogant guy the most. He doesn't understand the rules and acts so arrogantly. Last time, he made me so angry. I've never seen such an ungrateful loser. Now that he's dead, in his next life, he should learn to be humble."

She despised struggling losers and was even angrier at successful ones, believing they should stay in their own class.

Becoming famous was a grave offense.

Leila also smiled faintly at this. "This is what you call karma."

Today, she was wearing a black satin low-cut top, a black pleated knee-length skirt, and black stockings and high heels, making her all-black outfit look sexy.

So when she crossed her legs, she was very eye-catching, even drawing a glance from Eugene.

Leila didn't mind the attention, only thinking about that face. With James dead, she felt relieved and happy, but also a bit regretful.

She feared she would never again encounter such a rogue.

It would make life very boring.

Keith also smiled but didn't speak. He wasn't very interested in these grudges.

"Eugene, call and ask how James died," Lucy said, shaking her proud figure. "Are there any photos? Let me enjoy it."

"Alright, I'll ask. Oh, Neil called several times at dusk, probably to report the situation, but I was busy," Eugene said, holding a wine glass in one hand and taking out his phone with the other. "Otherwise, we could have heard James's screams firsthand."

Lucy was overjoyed. "Ask him quickly."

At that moment, the sound of car engines roared at the door, and then a jeep rushed to the entrance.

The car door opened, and their head bodyguard Marvin emerged. "This evening, James killed Sadie, Montgomery, and The Bennett's two hundred elite members. An hour ago, James, with just a sword, stormed The Bennett villa, fought a hundred men, killed The Shadow, Triad Archibald, and Thunder. Neil is also dead, and The Bennetts are completely wiped out."

Lucy and the others were instantly dumbfounded.
