Chapter 227 What Kind of Existence
The next morning, James also received the news of Larry's death.
He hit up Scott and had Samuel drive him over to the funeral home.
There, he ran into Scott and Bruce. After throwing on a hood and gloves, he stepped into the morgue.
A cold breeze smacked him in the face, bringing along the stench of booze and blood, making James squirm. He rubbed his nose.
He squinted, checking out the morgue.
The place was packed with tools and chemicals, with a steel autopsy table smack in the middle.
Larry, the big shot of the Los Angeles chapter, was laid out on the table, looking pale and huge.
James walked over.
"Yesterday afternoon, after Larry and Damon got hurt, they were rushed to Harmony Care Hospital," Scott explained. "They wanted to manage the condition and then fly to Stardust City. Damon and John got treated, but Larry took a pill for his internal injuries. He freaked out, kicked everyone out, and stayed alone.
When the chopper landed, Damon sent someone to get Larry, but they found him dead on the bed, eyes wide open."
"One clean stab to the throat!" Scott pointed to a small but deep blood hole in Larry's neck.
The murder weapon was a mystery.
"The attack was brutal and precise," Scott sighed. "The cops think Larry was taken out before he even knew what hit him. No one knows who hated him that much."
Scott was stressed. Larry was a big deal, with high status and connections. His death in Rosewood City brought a ton of pressure.
Several calls had already come in, pushing him to get the cops to solve the case fast to avoid any chaos.
"I looked into Larry's enemies," Bruce said. "None of them had the chance to come to Rosewood City and attack him. They didn't have the skill or the time. When it happened, they were in their own territories. They couldn't have timed it with Larry's incapacitation."
Bruce looked at James. "So this hit is likely more than just a grudge."
James smirked. "I guess I'm the prime suspect now."
"Yeah, Damon and John think you offed Larry, saying you crippled him and then finished him off to avoid payback," Scott nodded. "They claim that since you could cripple Larry, only you could kill him. The whole Los Angeles Mystic Alliance is in an uproar, all screaming for revenge against you. If the cops hadn't restricted their entry, this place would be swarmed by now. But you still need to watch your back. Larry's adopted daughter and top disciple, Ruby, might come after you."
Scott advised, "If you can, lay low for a few days. It's not about being scared, but there's no need to stir the pot."
Scott patted James on the shoulder. "I'll find the killer soon to keep things calm in Rosewood City."
James nodded. "Mr. Miller, don't worry. I'll handle myself."
Scott suddenly asked, "James, why do you think the killer went after Larry?"
"Love ain't it, money's not the motive, and a grudge seems off. That leaves causing trouble," James said, eyes cold. "The killer used Larry's visit to Rosewood City and his injury from me to stir things up. They know my connection to Mr. Davis, so with Larry dead, I'll be in danger, and Mr. Davis will have to protect me. This will piss off the Los Angeles Mystic Alliance, leading to a clash between the two factions. The Rosewood City Mystic Alliance stands with you all. If it clashes with the Los Angeles Mystic Alliance, it'll drag you, Mr. Miller, into the mess. This will throw Rosewood City into chaos."
James stood tall, his words firm. "The killer's goal wasn't just to off Larry or me, or to stir up a fight between the factions. They want a full-scale brawl in Rosewood City to take advantage of the chaos and shake up the power structure."
Scott and Bruce exchanged shocked glances. They hadn't expected James to see so clearly.
James then looked at Bruce. "Where's Mr. Davis?"
"Mr. Davis went to Stardust City last night," Bruce said. "Lancelot came out of seclusion, and he went to congratulate him."
Though Bruce spoke lightly, James knew Richard had gone to deal with the Larry situation.
James sighed. "Mr. Davis has it tough."
As they spoke, the three left the morgue and stood on the steps, soaking up the sunlight, feeling a bit warmer.
Just then, the roar of car engines sounded, and three black Audis rolled up.
The car doors swung open, and seven or eight men and women stepped out, their arms wrapped in white cloth, each with an arrogant expression.
Scott was surprised to see them, not expecting them so soon.
Bruce frowned, recognizing them.
One of the women in black was the leader. She was tall, with her long hair tied up, sharp eyes, and an arrogant face.
She glanced at her phone and then locked her gaze on James. "You James?"
Scott and Bruce noticed the killing intent in her eyes.
Before Bruce could speak, James asked calmly, "Who are you?"
"I'm Larry's disciple, Ruby," she said, glaring at James. "Seems like Damon and the others were right. You used a deterrent stick to intimidate President Green, then crippled and killed him. Otherwise, a hundred of you couldn't have hurt President Green. Enough talk. Kneel, break your own hands, and guard my master's coffin, awaiting the Los Angeles Mystic Alliance's punishment."
Ruby stood with her hands behind her back, exuding fearless bravery.
Her crew also glared angrily, ready to take James down.
James stopped Scott and Bruce from speaking and smiled indifferently. "Break my own hands? Are you even worthy?"
Ruby's face turned cold, her aura intimidating. "James, I advise you to be sensible and not provoke my anger. Otherwise, it won't just be your hands—you might lose your life. And don't think you can scare us with a deterrent stick. Before coming to Rosewood City, we left the Los Angeles Mystic Alliance. We are no longer its disciples and are not subject to the deterrent stick. You can't suppress us. Now, your life and death are in our hands, got it?"
In Ruby's eyes, James was just a bully who knew some impractical martial arts, far inferior to someone of her prestigious background.
She didn't kill James immediately because she wanted him to kneel and mourn Larry. After that, she planned to bury James alive for revenge.
James remained indifferent. "I don't get it!"
"Don't get it?" Ruby was furious. "James, do you not know who you're talking to? Do you know what kind of power is standing in front of you?"
She pointed a finger. "Do you believe I can kill you with one hand?"
