Chapter 206 Deterrent Stick
James yanked Bruce back just as he was about to make a move.
Richard showed some respect, but James? Nah, he couldn't cross the line. Everything needed a bit of wiggle room, and Nathaniel had already gotten his fair share of punishment.
In the end, Richard gave his son a swift kick before calling it quits.
For the next half day, Richard threw a banquet for James, handed him a cool fourteen million bucks, and hired him as a consultant for the Rosewood City Branch of Mystic Alliance, giving him a status on par with his own.
Then, Richard pulled out something that looked like a beefed-up baton, tough as nails.
Richard called it the Mystic Alliance's "deterrent stick."
This was the top reward given to Richard by the Mystic Alliance for his stellar achievements back in the day.
This item carried a great deal of authority over all thirty-six presidents of city branches and the three hundred thousand disciples.
He'd never used it, so today he handed it over to James.
James kept trying to turn it down, but Richard put on his serious face and flexed his authority, so James had to take it.
Luckily, this deterrent stick could shrink down, and with a simple press, it became two inches long, just enough to fit in a pocket.
That afternoon, when James left Richard's estate, he was hands down the most well-connected guy in Rosewood City.
But James didn't let it get to his head. After getting his emotions in check, he went back to taking over Randy's duties in treating patients.
As dusk rolled in, after seeing the last patient, James stood up, stretched, and was about to take a sip of tea when a sweet voice piped up from behind.
"James."
Kaitlyn bounced over from the backyard, grabbed James's arm, and asked, "Got plans tonight?"
Today, Kaitlyn was still rocking black, but her back was mostly exposed, showing off smooth, white skin that was pretty eye-catching.
As she got close to James, he felt a wave of heat, and her unique youthful scent made him feel a bit lightheaded.
"What's up?" James steadied himself and pulled his hand away. "How's the job hunt going?"
Kaitlyn had been crashing at Bright Heart Hall Clinic these past few days but hadn't been slacking, going out almost every day to look for a job.
James didn't treat her like a member of the Smith Family, and Kaitlyn didn't cling to James anymore. They were more like friends now.
But they rarely got the chance to chat because of their different schedules.
So today, seeing her come out so enthusiastically, James was a bit curious.
"I'm hustling on the job search, got interviews lined up every day." Kaitlyn grabbed James's arm again without hesitation. "Don't worry; I'm so pretty and smart, I'll land a good job soon. After all, I'm a top student with straight A's."
She was brimming with confidence.
"Weren't you gonna go to BH Pharmaceuticals?" James asked. "Why didn't you go? Didn't pass the interview?"
He had thought about helping Kaitlyn but knew her stubborn nature and that she needed to gain some experience, so he ultimately didn't step in.
Kaitlyn's face darkened at his words, then she pouted. "I wanted to go to BH Pharmaceuticals, but just thinking about Gary being there made me instinctively disgusted, so I didn't go."
Even though Gary had helped that night, Kaitlyn still resented his attitude towards James, so she would rather not take the job at BH Pharmaceuticals.
"You really are stubborn." James lightly tapped Kaitlyn's head. "Actually, you don't have to worry about Gary. I heard he's already resigned."
Gary didn't just leave BH Pharmaceuticals; Sebastian booted him out of Rosewood City entirely, so Kaitlyn didn't have to worry about running into him.
"Seriously? Why'd he quit all of a sudden?"
Kaitlyn was thrilled, then shook her head. "Too bad I already missed the interview shot."
James chuckled. "Just send in your resume again; you might still have a chance."
"We'll deal with that later." Kaitlyn slapped her forehead, remembering why she came here. "Are you free tonight?"
James nodded. "Yeah, I'm free."
"Then you're booked for the night." Kaitlyn was ecstatic and hugged James. "I've got a party tonight, and I want you to come with me."
"Another party?"
James's eyes widened, and he shook his head without hesitation. "No way. Last time I went to a party with you, it turned into a disaster. This time, there might be another mess. I'd rather just chill at home."
James was a bit worried, feeling that every party or banquet always led to trouble.
He wanted to avoid it if possible.
"Tonight's party is hosted by Sophie, a gathering of the big shots from Stardust City and Rosewood City."
"I didn't want to go either, but I didn't want to let Sophie down, and it's good to network, so I agreed to show up for the first half."
Kaitlyn looked at James with puppy eyes. "Besides, I'm from here. It'd be rude not to go. I'm a bit scared to go alone since I don't know many people, so I can only drag you along. Anyway, the party allows guests. And I heard there'll be tons of good food and drinks."
Kaitlyn gently shook James's hand. "James, please come with me. I swear, this is the last time this month."
"The last time this month, meaning there might be more next month?" James said, annoyed. "No way."
Kaitlyn clung tightly to James. "If you don't go with me and something happens to me, won't you feel guilty? And there'll be lots of beauties at the party. You've broken up with my sister, and you'll need to start a new relationship sooner or later."
She tempted James. "You might find someone at the party, and you'll never have to worry about being alone again."
"Alright, alright, I'll go, okay?" Seeing Kaitlyn talking nonsense, James could only helplessly interrupt her. "Wait a moment, I'll change my clothes. But you must listen to me; no matter how much fun we're having, we leave before midnight."
James was more concerned about Kaitlyn's safety than causing trouble.
Kaitlyn was overjoyed. "Whatever you say."
Fifteen minutes later, James and Kaitlyn walked out of Bright Heart Hall Clinic, and almost simultaneously, a Maserati pulled up.
The car stopped in front of James and Kaitlyn.
The door opened, and a tall girl wearing sunglasses stepped out, exuding a strong presence.
It was Sophie.
Sophie was dressed in a sheer black outfit, revealing a white midriff, and wore soft, thin shorts on her lower half.
Her fair skin and long, straight legs, combined with her beautiful face, drew the attention of passersby.
However, her cold and arrogant expression made many people lower their heads.
"Sophie!" Kaitlyn called out as she pulled James over to greet her. "You're here."
James squinted slightly, surprised that Sophie had come to pick up Kaitlyn, as if she was worried Kaitlyn wouldn't attend.
This made his smile more meaningful.
"Kaitlyn, what are you doing?" Seeing Kaitlyn walking over with James, Sophie's face darkened slightly. "Bringing him along will make Mr. Bell unhappy."
