Chapter 218 I'll Handle It
When James got the call and bolted to Harmony Care Hospital, it was already 10 PM.
In the hallway, he spotted Charles, Addison, and Kaitlyn pacing like caged animals. The emergency room doors were locked up tight.
"James!" Kaitlyn's face lit up like a Christmas tree when she saw him. "You're here."
James strolled over to the Smith family. "Kaitlyn, how's Mary?"
"How dare you show your face here?" Addison snapped before Kaitlyn could answer. "If it weren't for you, the Smith family wouldn't be in this mess. Christopher and Mary wouldn't be hurt."
She looked like she was about to slap him.
Kaitlyn quickly held her mom back. "Mom, this isn't James's fault. It's because of me."
"And you're still defending him? Those people were after James. When they couldn't find him, they came after us. You can't stay out of trouble, can you?" Addison fumed. "If anything happens to Mary, I won't forgive you."
James took a deep breath. "Mary will be fine."
"Alright, alright, this is a hospital. Keep it down," Charles said, trying to calm things down. "This isn't what James wanted. Those people went after the innocent; it's not his fault."
He looked at James. "Don't take it personally. Your mom's just worried about Mary."
James was surprised by Charles's understanding. Usually, Charles would join in on the scolding.
He nodded. "I get it."
Charles turned to Addison. "We've had enough drama. Let's not add to it."
Addison stopped yelling but still glared at James.
"How's Mary?" James asked, knowing Addison's temper and not taking it to heart.
"We just got here too," Charles said, looking beat. "The security guard said her hands were cuffed, her face was swollen, and she was bleeding. They treated her like a criminal. If the guard hadn't called the cops, who knows what would've happened."
Worry was clear in his eyes.
Addison looked sad too. She might not like James, but she loved her daughter.
James turned to Kaitlyn. "Was it Brandon and his crew?"
On the way over, James had heard a bit about what happened. A group had broken into the Smith family villa, beaten Mary, and left.
He immediately thought of Brandon and John.
Anger flashed in his eyes. He thought those guys would stop at some point, but breaking into the villa and hurting someone was too much.
"Yeah, it was them," Kaitlyn nodded. "But they erased the surveillance footage, and the cops are in their pocket. We can't get justice for my sister."
"Aren't you supposed to be so capable? Got connections, right?" Addison shouted again. "Go kill them. That'll settle it."
"Don't worry, I'll take care of it," James said firmly. "By tomorrow, this will be resolved."
Just then, the emergency room door swung open, and several doctors walked out.
Leading the group was Katherine, looking exhausted.
Addison rushed over first. "Ms. Gomez, how's my daughter?"
"She's not in life-threatening condition, but it's serious," Katherine replied, spotting James and giving him a nod. She turned back to Addison. "She has thirteen soft tissue injuries, a severe head injury, and her hands are torn from ropes. The worst is her abdomen; a kick broke a rib and damaged her internal organs."
The kick from the boxing champ had been brutal.
"I've stabilized her for now, but we need to monitor her. I'll transfer her to the inpatient department soon. Someone should handle the paperwork."
Katherine reassured them. "Don't worry, I'll have a nurse keep an eye on her."
Charles and the others thanked her profusely. "Thank you, Ms. Gomez."
"If you want to play it safe, you could have James take a look," Katherine suggested, smiling at James. "He's very skilled in medicine. Treating Miss Smith would be easy for him."
She had complete confidence in James's skills, having seen him save lives and cure her own skin condition.
Kaitlyn quickly spoke up. "James, please check on my sister."
Charles nodded. "James, why don't you take a look?"
"Don't you dare," Addison snapped, glaring at James. "Skilled in medicine? It's all luck. I don't trust him. Ms. Gomez and her team are enough for Mary. We don't need him."
She was as resistant to James as ever.
"Alright, then I'll leave it to you, Ms. Gomez. Keep me updated on Mary's condition," James said, not pushing the issue. From what Katherine said, Mary's condition was stable, so he wasn't in a rush to intervene.
He didn't stay to look after Mary. After a brief chat with Kaitlyn, he left the hospital.
Kaitlyn followed Katherine to handle the paperwork.
"Charles, were you out of your mind just now? Why didn't you help me teach that heartless person a lesson?" Addison scolded Charles once everyone had dispersed.
Charles spoke calmly. "Why should I beat up James?"
Addison retorted angrily, "The Smith family is in chaos because of James. He needs to be taught a lesson."
"James is just a pawn in a bigger scheme," Charles sighed. "This was all intentional."
Addison was taken aback. "What do you mean?"
"If it were just street thugs causing trouble, it would be one thing," Charles said. "But Sophie and her group are from Stardust City and connected to the Morris family. They know who we are. Under the Smith Clan's prestige, even we, the outcasts, shouldn't be targeted so blatantly. Their audacity is driven by someone behind the scenes."
He looked out the window, toward Stardust City.
"Are you saying they're targeting the Smith family?" Addison's eyelid twitched. "Is it to disgrace the Smith Clan or wipe us out completely?"
Charles didn't respond. He simply clasped his hands behind his back and walked away from the hallway.
His steps were unsteady, but his shadow on the ground sharpened, resembling a knife.
