Chapter 49 How Hard Was It
The square-faced bodyguard's body shook, and then he collapsed onto the ground like a lump of clay.
He couldn't utter a single word.
As he lay there, his two companions also fell, all of them in such pain that their faces turned pale, and they couldn't speak.
They looked at James in disbelief.
Wasn't he supposed to be a good-for-nothing? How could he be so formidable?
James didn't even glance at them as he stepped over their bodies.
At that moment, amid cheering, Joseph ignored Mary's refusals and kept shouting, "Mary, marry me, marry me. If you don't marry me, I won't get up."
His face was sincere, his affection deep, and his determination seemed unyielding as if he really wouldn't rise unless she agreed.
"Mary, just agree already. What are you waiting for?"
"Yeah, Mrs.Garcia has been kneeling too long. His knees will get damaged."
"He's kneeling for you. If you don't agree, are you even human?"
A dozen women scolded Mary, thinking she was too inconsiderate.
Mary watched this scene, her pretty face gradually turning pale.
She had seen many rogues, but this was the first time she had seen one like this.
Her impression of Joseph worsened significantly.
To help her brother win the beauty, Emily shouted the loudest, "Agree to him, agree to him."
They believed that with enough pressure, Mary would definitely nod.
James and Joseph were incomparable. Even a fool would know what choice to make.
At that moment, James walked over.
Emily was taken aback when she saw James appear. She thought to herself, 'How did the bodyguards let this loser in?'
Then she shouted at James with a show of force. "James, come here and witness the proposing. Don't you want Mary to be happy? Love is not about possessing her, but about ensuring her happiness for a lifetime."
James didn't speak. He just slowly walked up and stood beside Mary.
Mary huffed. "You're late!"
She glared at James fiercely. If James hadn't arrived so late, she could have used him to get away sooner instead of being put in such a passive position.
She tried to leave several times, but Emily and the others blocked her, their group's cheeky smiles preventing her from even releasing her anger.
James gave a wry smile. "Traffic."
Mary stepped back and huffed. "I don't care. Clean up this mess."
James said, "I'll handle it. You don't have to worry."
James's calm words instantly soothed Mary's irritated heart. She didn't want to admit it, but the truth was that James now gave her a sense of security.
"Is this the husband of the beauty? He looks so ordinary."
"I heard he's a live-in son-in-law, a freeloader. He's not good enough for you, beautiful. Why stick stubbornly with a loser?"
"Exactly, Mrs.Garcia is so handsome and wealthy, and he doesn't mind that you've been married before. You should feel extremely honored."
The crowd started discussing again, clearly favoring Joseph, as vanity was a common human trait.
Several women looked disdainful, thinking James was overestimating himself.
Seeing James appear, Joseph's expression remained unchanged, his gaze contemptuous as he threw a bank card.
Joseph said, "Ten million dollars, leave Mary."
Straightforward.
James also threw a bank card back. "One hundred million dollars, stop harassing Mary."
One hundred million dollars to stop harassing Mary?
Everyone was stunned, their mouths agape at James.
Nobody expected Joseph Garcia to offer ten million dollars for James to leave straightforwardly, and even less did they anticipate James countering without hesitation.
Joseph offered ten million dollars, and James just threw out a hundred million dollars, making Joseph Garcia lose his dignity in front of a large crowd.
After all, Joseph Garcia was the heir to a group with assets of three billion dollars.
And James was just a live-in son-in-law.
Emily sneered. "Hilarious, you depend on The Smith Family for a living, and yet you claim to have a hundred million dollars. You're overacting. If youhave a million dollars, I'll..."
James retorted without hesitation. "If I do have a million dollars, would you run naked through the streets?"
Emily was about to respond when she suddenly remembered the bank check and instinctively closed her mouth to avoid running naked.
"You think you are wealthier than me? You loser. Are you challenging me?" Joseph Garcia snapped back, sneering.
James spoke impatiently, "Are you leaving or not?"
Joseph scoffed. "I doubt you're even qualified to challenge me. There's no way you have a hundred million dollars in your bank account."
Emily and several women laughed coldly, clearly believing James was bluffing.
After all, who knew whether his bank card had funds.
James was blunt. "Just tell me, can a hundred million make you disappear from Mary's world?"
"Scumbag, who do you think you are?" Emily Garcia shouted, "Who gave you the nerve to challenge Joseph?"
Joseph Garcia sneered once more. "Brat, are you truly prepared to stand against me?"
He didn't believe James had a hundred million dollars, nor would he agree to leave for a hundred million dollars as it would leave a bad impression on Mary.
James looked indifferent. "Whether you want the money or not, if you keep harassing Mary, I'll make you pay."
Joseph asked, "Do you know who I am? You dare compete with me for Mary."
Joseph heard the funniest joke in the world.
Joseph said, "I am the heir to the Golden Corporation; my family has assets of over three billion dollars."
James interrupted, "I am Mary's husband!"
Joseph continued, "I was admitted to Harvard University at eighteen, earned a double degree in economics and management by twenty, and graduated with a doctorate in law from Harvard at twenty-four."
James kept interrupting, "I am Mary's husband!"
Joseph Garcia went on, "I am a director of Golden Corporation, I own six companies, and my business spans the globe."
James kept interrupting, "I am Mary's husband!"
No matter what Joseph Garcia said, James had only one response. "I am Mary's husband!"
Joseph was nearly driven to fury.
Joseph said, "Although Mary is your wife now, she might be my wife in the future!"
Joseph roared and pulled out his trump card, revealing a box.
As he opened it, a bright light shone forth. A ten-carat pink diamond was unveiled before everyone.
Countless women's eyes instantly lit up.
After all, which woman in the world doesn't love diamonds?
Joseph explained, "Mary, this is the Eternal Heart Diamond, worth ten million dollars, forged from the hardest diamond in South Africa. It represents my love for you."
Joseph Garcia's gaze was fervent. "Mary, give me a chance..."
Before Mary could respond, James stepped forward and picked up the pink diamond.
James said, "Diamond?"
"Scumbag, who let you touch my diamond?" Seeing James pick up the diamond, Joseph Garcia shouted, "It's worth over ten million dollars, and you dare touch it. Put it down right now."
James smiled. "This is a glass bead, right?"
"You are bumpkin, no sense of value. This is a priceless diamond." Joseph looked down scornfully. "The hardest diamond in the world..."
Before he could finish, James squeezed his fingers.
The diamond made a crisp sound and turned into a pile of powder...
James smiled faintly. "How hard is it?"
The entire crowd was dumbfounded.
