Chapter 50 Whose Car Was Blocking the Way
My goodness!
What astonishing finger strength!
Everyone who witnessed this scene couldn't believe their eyes.
A diamond worth millions, crushed into powder by James.
Everyone should know that even if a hammer were to strike it, a diamond wouldn't look like this.
The gaze of everyone present towards James was now filled with a touch more fear.
Even Mary's pretty face registered surprise. She hadn't expected James to be able to crush a diamond with his bare hands.
She then flashed a smile, feeling relieved from Joseph's harrassment.
Emily Garcia stormed up, shouting, "You bastard. You destroyed my brother's diamond. You owe us compensation."
"It was Joseph who claimed it was the hardest diamond, so I wanted to see just how hard it was," James replied with a calm smile. "But it turns out, this hardest diamond doesn't even need a hammer. It just crumbles with a squeeze."
James said, "Miss Garcia, Joseph was duped by the seller. He should seek compensation from them!"
He dusted off his hands and stood by Mary. "Besides, could something that my fingers can crush still be called a diamond?"
"You... you..." Emily was so incensed that she was practically seething, but the crushed diamond left her unable to muster a comeback.
Yes, how could something that crumbled so easily still be called a diamond?
Joseph also clenched his fists tightly, a flash of viciousness in his eyes, but it quickly faded to calm.
James said, "Joseph, let me warn you, Mary is my lawful wife."
James further scorned Emily and Joseph."Stay away from my wife in the future, or don't blame me for being rude!"
Seeing James's icy gaze, Joseph inexplicably shuddered, but he quickly recovered, wondering why he would be afraid of such a nobody.
Joseph asked, "Your wife? What right do you have to be her husband?"
Emily Garcia was furious. "You live off the Smith Family, spending Mary's money. How can you compare with Joseph? Mary can only be my sister-in-law."
"You keep saying Mary is your wife, but what have you ever bought for her?" Emily pressed aggressively. "Nothing at all!"
"We don't need those things," Mary said with a stern face. "James, let's go home."
"Mary, is it that you don't need these things, or is it that James has never given them to you?" Emily was set on making James uncomfortable. "James, why don't you tell us, have you ever given anything to Mary?"
"Indeed, I haven't," James admitted with a light smile. "But just because I haven't before doesn't mean I won't now or in the future."
Joseph sneered. "Show us by presenting Mary a gift worth ten million dollars right now. Do it in front of everyone, with your capabilities, and I promise I'll never bother Mary again. If not, you should leave the Smith Family and stay away from Mary."
He was pushing James to the edge. "I'm giving you three days to purchase the gift. Is that sufficient?"
Emily also smirked. "Yes, do you dare to accept this wager?"
James said, "No need for three days. I'll give Mary a gift right now."
James responded calmly with a smile, then pulled out a box from his pocket, the very thing Taylor Clark had given him.
On his way here, worried about being tricked by Taylor, James opened it and found a diamond necklace inside.
He hadn't studied it closely but felt it seemed of decent quality and could serve as a gift.
"A gift?" Emily scoffed sarcastically. "As if you had been intending to give Mary a gift from the start. Stop bluffing. You're just trying to salvage your dignity. If you have a gift, then reveal it. Don't keep it hidden. If you don't reveal it, who knows whether it's jewelry or just some cheap trinket inside?"
The crowd laughed, clearly thinking James was putting on an act.
How could a son-in-law possibly afford a gift worth ten million dollars?
Mary tugged at James's sleeve. "James, let's not argue with them. Let's go home. I'm tired."
She hoped James could give her a gift, but she feared that the gift in the box would not be up to par, giving Joseph and the others even more reason to mock.
She didn't mind, but she worried that James's hard-won self-esteem would be trampled again.
James didn't speak. Just opened the box.
A beam of light shone forth.
"Looks like there's something there, but unfortunately, given your status, whatever you bought must be trash." Emily mocked. "Bought from a street stall, right?"
Several women giggled behind their hands, disdainful of James's pretense.
James opened the entire box, exposing the contents completely.
A dazzling light burst forth instantly.
A necklace made up of twelve diamonds appeared.
It shone brilliantly, its pure and clear facets directly touching the heart.
It was stunningly beautiful and luxurious.
No one had seen such clean, dazzling diamonds before; for a moment, everyone forgot to react.
Joseph's eyes also turned stiff.
James picked it up and placed it around Mary's neck.
Mary instantly brightened.
James turned her around, her figure shimmering with light, radiant and majestic.
In that moment, Mary stood proud and regal, like an empress.
The female guests exclaimed in unison, "It's so beautiful."
Emily struggled to speak, "This must be a fake..."
"My God, could that be the legendary Alluring Love Diamond?"
Suddenly, a beautiful woman screamed.
The crowd looked at her, recognizing her as a major figure in the fashion and jewelry industry.
Soon, another lady excitedly exclaimed, "Yes, yes, that's right, it's the Alluring Love Diamond."
"What Alluring Love Diamond? Can it be better than Joseph's Eternal Heart Diamond?" Emily scoffed disdainfully.
As soon as she finished, another woman spoke up, "Ignorant! This diamond is worth at least a hundred million dollars!"
Everyone stared at James in shock.
No one had expected James to be so wealthy.
Even James himself was startled. He thought the necklace was worth at most ten million dollars, not realizing it was worth over a hundred million dollars.
Taylor's generosity was indeed grand.
Those who had just mocked James as a poor son-in-law were now awkwardly looking down, their entire fortunes probably not worth as much as the necklace.
Emily and Joseph were the most embarrassed. Their cheeks burned as if they had been publicly slapped, and their necks turned a deep shade of red.
Joseph's carefully prepared diamond, not only crushed by James but also worth less than a fraction of the Alluring Love Diamond. What a monumental blow to his pride.
They had intended for James to be humiliated, but instead, they were the ones embarrassed.
"A hundred million, is that a lot?" Emily looked at James with disdain. "A hundred million is just a drop in the bucket for Joseph. But for you, it's probably all you have, right? Maybe the necklace isn't even yours. Do you have anything else of value to show?"
Just then, a traffic officer rushed in, shouting, "Whose car is blocking the way? Please move it."
"Could it be Joseph's Ferrari blocking the way?" Emily responded loudly on purpose. "Joseph, you better move it."
The traffic officer said, "No, it's a Lamborghini that's a bit more expensive than your brother's Ferrari."James said, "Sorry, I'll move it right away."
James took out the Lamborghini keys and left with Mary...
The room fell silent once again...
