Chapter 264 Reese

Faced with Addison's endless chatter, James didn't think twice before hanging up the phone.

He grabbed some meds, bought a pot of porridge, and headed straight to The Smith Family villa.

Just as he thought, Mary was home, not at work, busy with her laptop in the living room.

When she saw James, she was a bit surprised, her expression softened, but then she snorted, "What are you doing here? Didn't you say you wouldn't care about me?"

She was grateful deep down but couldn't let go of her pride.

"You're like a dog, always ready to bite," James shot back, placing the stuff on the table. "I brought you some porridge, meds, and got your phone back."

"Being so nice to you, and you don't even thank me, just throw a fit?" James handed her the package.

Mary's face softened a bit seeing the stuff, but she still acted tough, "I didn't ask you to do it."

James, getting impatient, said, "If you keep this up, I'll take everything back."

Mary finally stopped arguing and started gulping down the porridge.

James didn't expect a thank you and continued, "By the way, your mom called a few times about fifteen minutes ago."

"I accidentally answered, and she wants you to go to the train station to pick up Aunt Reese," he checked the time, "She'll be here in half an hour."

"Aunt Reese?" Mary groaned, dropping her spoon and grabbing her phone. "My mom's nuts, dragging Aunt Reese into this."

"I remember Reese, who married into Stardust City, barely interacts with The Smith Family. She didn't even show up at any gatherings last year," James recalled a proud, chubby face. "The only time she appeared was in a New Year's video greeting."

Though James had never met Reese, he knew about her from Addison and Alice's gossip. She was the Moore family's star back in the day.

She got into a top university in Stardust City, became a civil servant at the pharmaceutical bureau, and married a local from Stardust City.

She turned her life around but got super arrogant.

Living in the nation's central city, Reese looked down on places outside Stardust City and avoided people like Addison and Alice.

In over twenty years, she'd only met Addison and the others five times, mostly communicating through video and phone calls.

Reese didn't even show up for Mary's wedding.

So hearing Reese was coming to Rosewood City, James was curious, "She didn't even come back for New Year's, so why now?"

"Well, my mom posted a bunch of photos of Peach Blossom Villa No. 1 on Facebook, with the price tagged," Mary laughed. "So a bunch of relatives reached out, and Aunt Reese said she wanted to come to Rosewood City to check it out. She wants to see if it's real. If it's fake, she'll expose my mom. If it's real, she'll try to get closer to her."

"We shouldn't have let your mom live there," James felt a headache coming on, "Now with all this, I bet all your relatives will show up soon."

"Probably," Mary stretched lazily with her phone, "I suggest you go to Peach Blossom Villa No. 1 and take it back, so I can have some peace."

"How am I supposed to take it back?" James wanted to kick Mary, "Mary, you borrowed the house. Shouldn't you be the one to kick them out?"

"I admit I borrowed it, but I can't kick them out," Mary said shamelessly.

"You're starting to sound like Addison. The only sane one in The Smith Family is Kaitlyn," James decided to drop the subject. "I'm not taking back Peach Blossom Villa No. 1 right now. Let Addison stay there, and you can too."

James secretly hoped Addison and Reese would clash.

Mary didn't say anything, just stared at James's left hand, where a clear bite mark was visible on his wrist.

James noticed her gaze and instinctively pulled his hand back.

"Olivia bit you?" Mary didn't give James a chance to dodge, her voice trembling slightly. "She saw you stayed here last night and bit you?"

"You're overthinking it," James sighed. "She wouldn't get jealous over something like this."

"You seem to care a lot about her. Really sticking up for her," Mary teased lightly. "If it wasn't her, was it a dog?"

James nodded without hesitation, "Yep, a dog bit me."

In his mind, Riley was just a little dog.

Hearing this, Mary's face softened a lot. She could tell it wasn't Olivia, as James wouldn't consider her a dog.

Although she was still curious about who bit James, as long as it wasn't Olivia, she felt at ease. "Let me see your hand."

"What for?" James quickly hid his hand behind his back. "I'm telling you, don't even think about biting me too."

"Idiot," Mary scolded. "I'm going to put some medicine on it and a band-aid. Don't get infected."

She brought out a first aid kit, disinfected and medicated James's wound, and put on a breathable band-aid.

"Alright, thanks. I'm leaving," James felt a bit dazed, a bit unreal, experiencing Mary's care for the first time as if it brought back memories of a cold winter eighteen years ago.

So after she finished, he grabbed his car keys and headed out.

Mary called out, "Where are you going?"

James didn't look back, "I'm going home for dinner."

"It's still early. Since you're here, do me another favor," Mary hurriedly ran up to pull James. "I'm too bruised to go out. Please help me go to the train station to pick up Aunt Reese."

"No way!" James ran off immediately.

In less than half an hour, James appeared at the Rosewood City train station.

He resisted Mary's request, but he didn't expect her to have Kaitlyn ask him.

Naive Kaitlyn thought it was an opportunity to ease the tension between them, so she asked James to do this favor.

James couldn't refuse and ended up coming to pick Reese up.

It was already 5:45 PM, fifteen minutes past the time, so James easily spotted two robust figures by the roadside.

The woman looked to be in her forties, dressed in designer clothes, wearing a watch, and a diamond necklace, exuding an air of arrogance.

She looked like a hard nut to crack for sure.

The man appeared to be in his early twenties, with shoulder-length hair, wearing sportswear, and holding a new phone.

James took out his phone to compare and found that it was indeed Reese and her son, Juan Moore.

James parked the car by the roadside and walked over with his phone.

As he approached, he heard Reese shouting into her phone, "Addison, what do you mean? We've been waiting for fifteen minutes, and no one has come to pick us up. Have you gotten rich and now look down on your poor relatives? If you didn't want us to come, you should have refused. And now you're avoiding us. Is this how people should act? I didn't ask you and Charles to come personally. Do you know how many dinners and people want to see me in Stardust City? And don't forget, if it weren't for my introduction, how would you have had the chance to please Mr. Morris? Do you believe I'll cancel the blind date the day after tomorrow?"
