Chapter103Choosing Gifts
The competition had ended, and with some time to spare, Madison, holding Matthew's hand, was excited to go shopping for presents for the twins and Rachel.
Matthew was excited, even without her bringing it up. He had already intended to buy presents for the kids as well.
The idea sparked a touch of yearning in both of them. Despite their daily video calls, nothing could replace the joy of actually holding the little ones.
"Matthew, do you still have work in Paris?" they strolled down the Champs-Élysées, their hands clasped.
"Nope," Matthew thought to himself. He was here purely to be with her, devoid of other commitments.
"Then let's head back tomorrow. It's been almost a week, and I miss Quentin and Hannah."
"Sure, I'll have Brian book the flights. Home tomorrow," Matthew nodded, always agreeable to her wishes.
They stepped into an upscale boutique where Madison planned to purchase a handbag for Rachel. With the prize money from the competition, she thought it was the perfect opportunity for gift shopping.
Discovering the prices to be quite reasonable, Madison chose a classic handbag and proceeded to the cashier to make the purchase.
Matthew followed and, knowing she seldom indulged in luxury, reached out with his card before she did.
"This one's for Rachel. I just won some prize money. Let me pay," she pushed Matthew's card back at him.
"Well, pick one for yourself then, and I'll pay for it," Matthew insisted. It seemed only right for him to treat his wife while she treated someone else.
Madison, not one to indulge in luxury items, thought it wasn't really essential. However, for Rachel, it was a different story. She had noticed a purse in a magazine and had playfully mentioned the idea of treating herself to it. Now, with the opportunity and a more reasonable price, it seemed like the perfect gift.
Madison was taking a shower when Matthew received a call from Brian.
"Matthew, I've booked the flights for you and the lady for noon tomorrow. I'll send you the e-ticket information shortly."
"Great, thanks a lot," Matthew replied, surprising Brian on the other end of the line. A thank you from the usually stoic Matthew was a rarity. It was clear to Brian that Madison's influence was tremendous, and he made a mental note to stay on their good side for future favor.
"Uh, of course, Matthew, no trouble at all."
After hanging up, Brian was still in disbelief. Was that really their boss on the phone? The change was unbelievable.
After her shower, Madison found Matthew by the window with his phone. "Your turn for the shower," she offhandedly remarked.
Matthew briefly checked the flight details that Brian had sent before putting his phone aside.
"Yeah, Brian arranged our flight for noon tomorrow. He called to tell me about it," Matthew volunteered, fearing Madison might think someone else was on the line.
"Oh." Madison patted her hair with the towel, curious about why he seemed so eager to explain. Was he genuinely concerned that she might find her unreasonable?
Feeling relieved that she wasn't bothered, Matthew went to take a shower.
Emerging in his bathrobe with dry hair, he found Madison snugly wrapped up in bed, engrossed in a movie on TV.
Matthew couldn't help but chuckle. She didn't have to tuck in quite that tightly.
He slipped into the bed from the other side without a word.
Madison was hooked on a romance flick she'd found.
"Flipped," an old film from 2010, chronicled the tale of young Juli and Bryce's evolving love. With love at first sight, Juli made every attempt to get close to him while he tried just as hard to keep his distance. But ultimately, misunderstandings paved the way for Bryce to see Juli's kindness, warmth, and beauty truly.
Madison loved getting into movies, laughing, and crying with the characters. Matthew preferred quiet company, sitting beside her while playing Candy Crush on his phone since romantic films weren't his favorite.
Their feet accidentally touched under the covers.
A sudden spark shot through Matthew, igniting a silent fire in him.
