Chapter 173 Blame It on Finding Someone Too Exceptional
She hadn't expected this man to be capable of such a domestic task, and once again, he surprised her with a new aspect of his personality.
What to do, her interest in him was growing...
Her mother specifically prepared the lunch. Even though she didn't cook it herself, personally delivering it was almost the same. If he liked it, she could even consider learning to cook.
She had always been a proud person, accustomed to everyone else chasing after her. It would have been unthinkable for her to lower her stance before.
But if the subject was him, maybe it wasn't too much to break her own rules, especially since the more challenging the task, the more she relished it. And she liked a good challenge.
After Willow descended the stairs, she slumped into her chair, exhausted. Most colleagues had gone out for lunch, leaving the office unusually quiet, which made the vibration of her phone startlingly conspicuous.
Willow fished her phone out of her bag. Mrs. Jonah?
"Hey, Mrs. Jonah, why are you calling me at this time?" Willow asked, surprised by the call.
"Willow? Are you resting? Did you have lunch yet?" Mrs. Jonah inquired.
"Yeah, I ate already."
"Ha-ha, the thing is, Mrs. Jonah recently met a new friend, and as it turns out, her son works in Horizon City, and he's a doctor, no less. Maybe... you two could chat?"
Willow was absolutely stunned by her mother's phone call.
Oh my goodness...was this...was she being set up on a blind date? Had she reached that age already?
"Maybe not. I've been pretty busy lately," Willow said. Her first instinct was to decline. Sitting face to face with someone she didn't know, having to introduce family backgrounds, work situations, and even income details...
Being chosen or rejected, she really didn't want that!
"Oh, come on. You're not going to meet right away. Just add each other on Facebook. You young people can have a chat first and see how it goes."
"Alright." Willow, a dutiful daughter, didn't know how to say no to her mother and reluctantly agreed.
"Great, then I'll send your Facebook to them. Remember to accept the young man's request."
Mrs. Jonah ended the call happily.
Willow felt even more downcast and started venting in her group chat with Daniel and Ophelia.
Willow: [She's asking me to go on a blind date, do I look that old?]
Ophelia: [A blind date? What does he look like? Do you have a photo? Send it over!] Ophelia immediately jumped in, her curiosity palpable even through the screen.
Willow: [Ophelia, you really belong in the entertainment industry, don't you? A little gossip queen. It would help if you considered becoming a paparazzi; you might earn more than from acting and commercials.]
Ophelia: [You just gave me a new idea. A side job would be all right, ha. Plus, I'd be dealing with real news, ha-ha-ha.]
Willow was momentarily speechless.
Willow: [What about that younger guy from last time? There's nothing shameful about blind dates. It doesn't hurt to meet.]
Willow: [Why don't you go for me?]
Willow: [It's not a bad idea. Maybe I'll meet my soulmate!]
Willow felt the conversation was too overwhelming; her friends were too much.
Putting down her phone, Willow decided to skip her nap; she couldn't fall asleep anyway. She opened her laptop and dove back into work, completely missing the sound of someone quietly entering the room behind her.
"Why don't you take a break?" Mitchell was still a bit concerned about her and decided to come downstairs to check on her. The chairs provided to the JK Group staff could recline for a quick nap. Most of the others were still out for lunch, and those who had returned were already napping with eye masks and earplugs.
Willow was startled and nearly jumped out of her chair. Why did Jonah make no sound at all every time he walked? It wasn't very comforting.
Mitchell felt innocent as he watched the girl pat her chest in alarm. She had been too focused on her work. He had coughed twice before speaking, but she was still startled.
"Jonah~"
Willow glanced behind him. Had Marigold left?
"Is there something behind me?"
"Oh, no... nothing."
"Why don't you rest for a while? You'll be dizzy again later."
"I slept too much yesterday. I can't fall asleep now," Willow whispered in reply.
"Have you looked at the proposal?"
"Yes, it's just..." Willow was preparing to tell him they should assign someone else to follow up on this project.
"Is there a problem with the proposal?"
"No, no," Willow quickly waved her hand, "it's just... I've been pretty busy lately. Is it possible for someone else to take over this project?"
"Didn't Luca assign someone to help you?"
"He did..."
This time, Luca had been very accommodating, filling in wherever needed and providing whatever was necessary for the project, which Willow was obliged to lead.
"If you're too busy, let others work on it with you. You're not the only one in charge; you can lead, and the project team can be responsible together. It's a good opportunity for practice."
"Oh~" Willow replied dejectedly, muttering under her breath, "I don't even want this opportunity."
"What did you say?" Mitchell only saw the young girl with her head down, mumbling something, not quite catching her words.
"No... nothing. I'll definitely do my best and won't let you down," Willow suddenly looked up, standing tall and full of fighting spirit, as if she were heading to battle.
Mitchell couldn't help but laugh at her demeanor. "It's just a small project, so there's no need to be so worked up."
"But it is your girlfriend's project. She might be your future bride, you know. How can I not put in the effort?" Willow said quietly.
"You girls and your imaginations. What's this about a future bride? Just review the proposal. If it needs changes, have them come over and discuss it."
"Okay~"
"And try not to work late tonight. Matthew and Victor are catching an early flight tomorrow."
That's right. She almost forgot that Matthew and his group were heading to Italy tomorrow; they all intended to go to the airport to see them off.
"I almost forgot," Willow muttered to herself.
Mitchell heaved a soft sigh and placed a bottle of fresh milk on Willow's desk before walking away.
Willow made a face at his retreating figure, then vigorously twisted off the cap and guzzled down half the bottle in one go, finding some relief.
Truthfully, Jonah had always been very kind to her, which solidified her feelings and made it impossible for her to settle for anyone other than younger Madison. Who could she blame? Was it wrong to find others less appealing because the one she admired was so outstanding?
Liking expensive things was one thing; she could always earn more money to buy them. But admiring someone so exceptional was different; no matter how hard she tried, there was no guarantee they'd feel the same way. Making money seemed much easier in comparison.
