Chapter 272 We can't do it
Willow ignored Jimmy for several days in a row, and then, during lunch on the third day, she received a call from Mother Nelson.
"Mom, why are you calling me at this time?" When Mother Nelson called, Willow was having lunch with Elizabeth at a hot pot restaurant.
"Willow, are you eating? Have you been in contact with Jimmy recently? He's several years younger than you. It would help if you took care of him more proactively. This child is really thoughtful. Last time, when he went to his grandmother's house, your dad casually mentioned that their family's tea was good. Look, this child sent two big cans of tea to your dad. You should treat him to a meal in Horizon City and thank him for us." Mother Nelson spoke excitedly, praising Jimmy nonstop.
Willow mumbled, "I know, Mom. I've been busy recently, but I'll invite him to a meal when I have time."
"Eating a meal won't take much time. You're so stubborn, my child." Mother Nelson's tone sounded a bit impatient, as if she wanted Willow to invite Jimmy to dinner tonight.
"Okay, Mom, I'll try to make time," Willow said helplessly.
After hanging up the phone, Elizabeth, who had been prying for information, asked, "Who did your mom ask you to treat to a meal?"
"A neighbor's younger brother," Willow replied while eating her hot pot.
Seeing that she showed no abnormal behavior, Elizabeth then gossiped about Mitchell: " I haven't seen President Jonah's rumored girlfriend coming to see him lately. She used to come often. Do you know what's going on?"
The reason Elizabeth referred to Laura as the "rumored girlfriend" was mainly because Mitchell always introduced her as a project partner at the company. Still, everyone tacitly agreed that Laura was his girlfriend.
When Elizabeth suddenly mentioned Mitchell, Willow ate with her head down, almost choking on her food. "I don't know," she said reflexively, not wanting to discuss Mitchell and Laura. "Maybe he's just busy with work and doesn't have time to come over."
Willow knew more inside information than Elizabeth, such as how Laura and Mitchell were set up on a blind date, how their parents knew each other and strongly pushed for the relationship, and how she was Mitchell's first girlfriend. Because of this, she didn't think they would break up.
After finishing their lunch, Willow and Elizabeth walked back together. They usually took a short nap during lunchtime, so they didn't spend too much time eating. If they didn't order takeout, they would find something nearby.
As they reached the building of their company, Elizabeth grabbed Willow's arm excitedly. "Willow, look! Isn't that our President Jonah's rumored girlfriend?"
Willow looked up and saw a tall figure wearing a khaki-colored professional suit and high heels walking into the office building. Although she only saw the figure from behind, it was clearly Laura.
While Elizabeth continued talking next to her, Willow didn't listen or say anything. Once she returned to her office, she put on an eye mask and tried to take a nap. However, she couldn't fall asleep, and her mind was jumbled.
Upstairs, Mitchell had planned to have lunch with Willow. However, a meeting had lasted longer than expected, and by the time he was ready to call her, he realized it was already past lunchtime and assumed she must have eaten. He didn't make the call. His assistant went out to buy him a packed meal, and he quickly solved his lunch problem.
Just as he finished eating and sat back down at his computer, he heard footsteps and looked up to see Laura standing at the door. He frowned slightly. "Why are you here?"
Laura walked into the office with her bag, gracefully took a seat on the couch, and said, "What's wrong? Can't I come? My dear fiancé." She emphasized the last few words intentionally, slowly, and solemnly.
Mitchell's expression turned serious as he heard her words. "Laura, I don't appreciate jokes. And this kind of joke is inappropriate."
Laura leaned back on the couch, crossing her long legs and wearing a confident and determined smile. "I'm not joking. Don't you know? Our parents have already been discussing our engagement. So, sooner or later, you'll be my fiancé!"
Mitchell was momentarily stunned, but he quickly realized that this was something his mother would be capable of. He calmly stood up and walked to the edge of the sofa, expressionless as he spoke, "We can't get engaged, and I won't become your fiancé."
Laura was taken aback by his firm and definite rejection without any hesitation.
Mitchell didn't give her a chance to speak again and continued, "I'll deal with my parents, and if necessary, I can explain things to your parents as well."
Hearing his words, Laura became somewhat excited and stood up, saying, "Why? Since we are both single, why not give it a try? How do we know it's impossible if we don't try?"
Mitchell's voice turned cold, "I thought I made myself clear the first time we met."
Laura was persistent and thought they could resolve the situation if they pressured both sets of parents. She assumed that Mitchell didn't care. "Yes, it was clear. We said at the beginning..."
"I have someone I like," Mitchell interrupted her without letting her finish her sentence. Laura was left stunned, and finding her voice took her a while. She had never imagined that Mitchell would be so frank in telling her that he liked someone else. Although she had already guessed and even knew who he wanted, it was still embarrassing to be rejected so decisively face-to-face. She had been pursued in several relationships before and hadn't encountered any difficulties. It was her first time trying to pursue someone, and it was not going smoothly. She couldn't give up and deliberately asked, "Who? Who do you like?"
Mitchell turned around and walked back to his desk. "That's none of your concern."
"How is it not my concern? I need to know who my competitor is. Only by knowing myself and knowing my opponent can I achieve victory in every battle," Laura quickly regained her composure and spoke in a light tone as if she hadn't been affected.
Mitchell sat back down at his computer desk, looked at Laura, and remained silent for a moment before saying, "You've already lost."
Laura seemed not to understand Mitchell's rejection and straightforwardly asked, "It's Willow, right? The person you like is Willow." She said it with a tone of certainty. She had already known during their vacation that the person in Mitchell's heart was Willow.
