Chapter 519 Narrow Encounter
Elizabeth was fuming over Savannah's sarcastic tone and wanted to confront her.
'Like we can't afford a few thousand-dollar clothes, huh? And I only have two small snacks. Where did that weird smell come from?' She'd never met such a pretentious and annoying intern.
Elizabeth had enough and was ready to charge forward, but Willow quickly pulled her back.
It wasn't worth it. Just let her talk. If things got out of hand, company policy would punish Elizabeth too.
Willow was naturally gentle and liked to avoid trouble.
Elizabeth thought about Willow's pregnancy and the risk of accidental harm. With Willow holding her back, she held in her anger.
Elizabeth linked arms with Willow and kept walking, planning to get some cupcakes.
But if she didn't stand up for herself, people would think she was easy to bully.
As they passed the two interns, Savannah kept making snide remarks, "Elizabeth, I wasn't talking about you. I don't know who was eating, but the smell is awful. Did you smell it too?"
Elizabeth was speechless. She coldly replied, "My nose isn't that sensitive. I can't smell anything."
Then, she turned to Willow and said, "Let's go, Willow. The air here is really bad, especially for someone pregnant like you. You should avoid it."
Though she was talking to Willow, she stared at the two interns.
The interns knew the words were aimed at them.
The shorter intern didn't think much of it. She was usually intimidated by Savannah and followed her around because Savannah promised to help her stay after the internship.
She came from a remote area with poor conditions and had a younger brother. She studied hard to change her fate and settle in the city. The job at JK Group was precious to her. If she could stay, she'd be ahead of her classmates, especially with JK's great benefits. If she worked long enough, she might even get a chance to buy a house at a low price or get one for free, which was a huge deal for her.
Elizabeth had been with the company for a while but mostly worked quietly on her drawings and didn't interact much with the interns. Unlike others who took the interns to job sites and social events, she wasn't very familiar with them.
Savannah, on the other hand, was great at getting along with colleagues, especially the male ones, with her delicate demeanor. This made her feel superior in the project team. She'd been there less than a month and already didn't take Elizabeth and other low-key seniors seriously.
In front of the leaders, she always volunteered for tasks but never did them herself, relying on her looks to get others to do the work. Female colleagues were already tired of her.
Willow and Elizabeth had just taken a few steps when Savannah finally recognized Willow.
'Isn't she the one I saw in Mitchell's office at noon, having lunch with him?'
Savannah hadn't figured out that the woman in Mitchell's office was actually his wife. She tried to chat with the secretary earlier, but only an intern was there who didn't know anything. Seeing Willow with Elizabeth, she assumed Willow was from a partner company. Otherwise, she wouldn't be with Elizabeth and seem so friendly. She guessed they just happened to meet at noon, and Mitchell invited her to lunch.
As they reached the elevator, Savannah called out, "Elizabeth, where are you going?"
She still wanted to follow and find out more.
Elizabeth turned and coldly said, "Savannah, does it concern you?"
"I'm just worried that if the manager asks, we can cover for you," Savannah replied shamelessly.
"Thanks, but no need. Not being at my desk doesn't mean I'm slacking off. I'm not skipping work, so there's no need for cover," Elizabeth said as the elevator arrived. She pulled Willow in, not wanting to deal with Savannah anymore.
The two interns were left standing there. The shorter one curiously asked, "Who is that pregnant woman next to Elizabeth?"
Savannah glared at Willow and Elizabeth's backs as they entered the elevator and harshly replied, "How would I know? Probably someone sent by a partner company. Coming to work with a big belly, she must be poor, and her husband must be useless."
She then turned and walked back to her desk.
The shorter intern frowned slightly at her words, as poverty was also her sore spot. It felt like her "good friend" was looking down on her too. She said nothing more and returned to her desk.
Savannah sat down and prepared to review the plans.
The manager had given each of them two plans to analyze and summarize their pros and cons.
Savannah opened the plans but couldn't focus. She looked at the person in front of her, who was seriously reviewing documents, and got up with her two folders. She walked to the shorter intern she had been with earlier and said, "Jenny, have you finished your summary?"
Jenny looked up. "I've done half of it."
Savannah placed her two folders on Jenny's desk. "Can you help me with mine too? I have a lot of other work that I can't delegate."
"Okay." Jenny hesitated but agreed, as Savannah had promised to secure her a spot to stay after the internship.
"Thanks, I'll treat you to coffee sometime," Savannah said casually and returned to her desk, taking out her makeup bag to touch up.
The manager's meeting would end soon, and Mitchell would return to his office.
Savannah planned to take the unsigned documents from the morning to him and see him again.
