Chapter 502 Gave Birth

Madison went back to her hometown the day after Christmas to visit her grandfather's grave. She was two weeks from her due date, and Matthew was worried. What if something happened? Even though Madison had been fine during her pregnancy, he was still concerned.

But visiting her grandfather was important.

In Horizon City, it's a tradition to visit deceased relatives on Christmas. Matthew had planned to take the kids only while Madison stayed home, but she wanted to go. The doctor said it was okay, so they all went.

On Christmas Day, Matthew, his family, and William visited Matthew's parents. The next day, they went to Madison's hometown, paid respects to her grandfather, and came back the same day.

Madison's belly was big, so even short walks took longer. They returned right after the visit. Matthew drove a business car with a reclining seat so Madison could rest during the drive.

After that, Matthew didn't let Madison go out anymore. She could only walk around Nelson Mansion for a few minutes after meals, and then he made her rest. Madison didn't mind since she felt heavy in her lower abdomen. The doctor said she could go into labor anytime and should be ready.

Five days before her due date, in the evening, Matthew helped Madison out of the bathroom. Her belly was so big that bathing was hard, so Matthew stayed with her.

As they reached the bed, Madison felt wet. Her pajama pants were soaked. She realized her water had broken.

"Honey, get the hospital bag we packed," Madison said calmly.

A week ago, Matthew had packed the hospital bag under Madison's direction, just in case. She worried that if contractions started first, Matthew might panic.

Matthew didn't know her water had broken. He put down the pajamas and asked nervously, "What's wrong? Is your belly hurting? Do we need to go to the hospital?"

Madison stood still. "My water broke."

Matthew froze, then picked her up and ran downstairs, calling Valerie to get the hospital bag.

William and the kids were asleep, so Matthew didn't wake them. He put Madison in the front seat and told her to elevate her legs. Valerie brought the hospital bag down.

"Is Ms. Johnson going into labor?" Valerie asked anxiously.

"Yes, Valerie. We're heading to the hospital. Tomorrow morning, let my grandpa and the others know and have them come to the hospital. It's too late for everyone to go now," Matthew instructed.

"Okay, go quickly," Valerie nodded.

Matthew tossed the bag in the trunk, jumped in the car, and sped to the hospital. They'd been doing prenatal check-ups at a private hospital and planned to deliver there. He called the hospital on the way, so when they arrived, doctors and nurses were ready with a stretcher.

Madison was quickly taken to the delivery room.

Following the nurse's instructions, Matthew changed into sterile clothing and went in with her.

Madison had a fetal heart monitor, an oxygen tank, and other devices hooked up. She seemed okay; her water had just broken, and the contractions were still mild.

Matthew sat by the bed, holding her hand, more nervous than she was. "How are you feeling? Don't worry, I'm here."

Madison smiled. "I'm okay for now."

Having given birth before, she wasn't as nervous.

The doctor told Matthew to get some food for Madison, estimating she wouldn't deliver until early morning.

Matthew drove a bit to find a porridge shop, packed some porridge, and brought it back. By the time he returned, Madison's contractions were more frequent. She only managed a few bites before the pain got too intense.

The doctor asked if they wanted an epidural.

Matthew immediately said, "Yes, give it to her. Will it stop the pain?"

The doctor smiled. "It will help, but it has to be turned off before delivery. She'll need to push on her own."

"Okay." Matthew's eyes were red. Seeing Madison in pain, gripping the bed rail, he just wanted to take the pain away.

After the epidural, the doctor told Madison to rest. They checked her dilation every half hour. Finally, around 4:00 a.m., the baby was born.

It was a boy, weighing 9.98 pounds.

As soon as he was born, he cried loudly, full of energy.

The nurse weighed him, dressed him, and placed him in a small bed next to Madison.

Madison needed to be observed in the delivery room for two hours, with the baby and Matthew by her side.

After the baby was born, Matthew only glanced at him briefly. His focus was on Madison. The delivery had been heart-wrenching for him. He couldn't hold back and cried. With red eyes, he held Madison's hand and said tearfully, "Thank you for your hard work."

He thought, 'If I had known childbirth was this painful, I wouldn't have had this one. Quentin and Hannah are enough.'

Yes, he regretted it.

Madison, seeing him like this, comforted him instead, "It's okay now. The baby is born. Go take a look at him. Isn't he cute?"

"I don't want to. He made you hurt so much; he's not cute at all." Matthew buried his head in Madison's arm, mumbling. He really didn't look at the baby again.

Actually, in that brief glance, he found the baby quite cute.

The baby's skin was fair and rosy. He had long eyelashes, and the nurse said he had double eyelids, though Matthew hadn't looked closely. He didn't know if Quentin and Hannah looked like this when they were born. The baby was tiny, with closed eyes, lying quietly in his little bed. Matthew didn't even dare to hold him.
