Chapter 276 A Little Midnight Incident
After Mitchell went upstairs, he directly lay down on the bed, feeling a bit dizzy in his head. Looking at the ceiling above, he chuckled at himself, never expected that at his age, he would make such a childish move, drinking with someone, especially a young man who hadn't even graduated from college.
Mitchell lay on the bed, half-closed his eyes, and many past scenes flashed through his mind before falling asleep like that.
Thirsty in the middle of the night, he woke up only to realize he hadn't changed his clothes or taken a shower and had actually fallen asleep like that. Now that the alcohol had worn off, he was much more awake. He went downstairs in his daytime clothes to pour some water to drink. Just as he reached the first floor, he heard some noise coming from the kitchen. Mitchell walked into the kitchen and saw a figure illuminated by the moonlight. He intended to call out to her but found his throat a bit dry, so he walked over. Just as he reached behind her, the person suddenly turned around. Due to the close distance, Mitchell's lips accidentally kissed her forehead, leaving both of them stunned.
Willow was not just stunned; she was completely shocked. Feeling a bit thirsty in the middle of the night, suspecting she had eaten too much spicy shrimp, she prepared to get some water to drink. Why didn't she turn on the light? She was staying at someone else's house and was worried about disturbing others, so she slowly made her way downstairs in the dark. The kitchen window was open, allowing the moonlight to shine through and provide enough visibility. Just as she finished pouring a glass of water and was about to return to her room, a sudden, unexpected situation occurred as she turned around.
The two were in close proximity, and Willow could even feel the warmth of Mitchell's breath as he accidentally kissed her forehead. He still had a faint smell of alcohol on him, with his eyes and brows slightly lowered, a look that could captivate the heart.
Mitchell snapped back to reality first, his eyelashes fluttering, looking at Willow in her nightclothes, a blush creeping up to his ears. He cleared his throat, slightly turned his face away, took a step back, and hoarsely asked, "Why didn't you turn on the light?" his voice rough.
Willow lowered her head, tightly gripping the hem of her clothes, feeling nervous. "I... I can see," she said before Mitchell could respond, and she swiftly ran off. "Mitchell, I'll go upstairs first."
Willow ran back to her room in one breath, closed the door behind her, leaned against it, and slowly squatted down, placing a hand on her chest. In the darkness, she could clearly hear her heart beating fiercely. After a while, she couldn't help but smile foolishly.
After lying back on the bed, Willow still felt her heart beating fast and took a long time to fall asleep.
After Willow ran off, Mitchell silently poured two large glasses of cold water and gulped them down to quench the fire inside him. He forcefully removed his tie, stood in the kitchen for a while, and finally smiled slightly.
Mother Jonah heard Daniel mention that Willow was also there the following day, so she hurriedly prepared more breakfast. Looking at the abundant breakfast spread on the table, Daniel remarked, "Mom, you're biased. You know Willow is here, so breakfast is more lavish than usual."
Mother Jonah chuckled and said, "Of course, Willow hasn't been here in a long time. I have to treat her well." She kept urging Willow to eat more.
Willow obediently said, "Thank you, aunty."
Daniel, while eating breakfast, didn't see her dad or brother around and casually asked, "Why haven't I seen my dad and brother? Haven't they woken up yet?" Daniel found it somewhat unbelievable as her brother was known for his discipline, yet he hadn't woken up today. Did he really drink too much last night?
The busy eating Willow had spent quite some time in her room before coming downstairs, worried about the awkward encounter with Mitchell in the morning. Not seeing him downstairs, she suddenly felt relieved but also a bit disappointed.
"Your dad woke up early, had breakfast, and went fishing," Mother Jonah said. However, she was also puzzled as her son had always been as disciplined as an old man since childhood, so it was really unusual for him to wake up so late today. "Daniel, go upstairs and see when your brother came back last night. Was there anything unusual when he returned?" Mother Jonah asked, concerned.
Daniel, holding a freshly peeled egg, took a bite and stood up, preparing to go upstairs to wake Mitchell up. He mumbled a response to Mother Jonah, "He came back around eleven, and everything seemed normal when he came back last night." Just as he stood up to pull out the chair, he saw Mitchell coming down from upstairs.
"He's already up, so there's no need for me to go wake him," Daniel said as he sat back down to continue eating breakfast. Seeing her son up, Mother Jonah quickly called him over to eat.
Mitchell leisurely walked over, pulled out the chair opposite Willow, and sat down. Since Mitchell came downstairs, Willow buried her head even lower, not daring to look up at him.
After sitting down, Mitchell furrowed his brows slightly. He hadn't slept well last night. After taking a shower in the middle of the night, he lay in bed with images of the girl sitting in front of him, eating breakfast with her head down, filling his mind. He had dozed off for a while just before dawn.
Lately, with his daughter frequently coming home, Mother Jonah visibly enjoyed the lively atmosphere at home, feeling very happy. Thinking back to her recent conversation with Laura's mom, she couldn't help but happily say, "Son, are you doing well with Laura lately? I haven't seen you bring any girls home for dinner. Every time, I have to accompany the girl shopping and eating meals. No matter how busy you are, you should make time to accompany the girl. How can you pursue a girl like this?"
Listening to her mom's words, Daniel paused in her breakfast actions. She was now very concerned about Mitchell's emotional state, her eyes fixed on him, seemingly waiting to see his reaction. After observing for a while, with no change in Mitchell's expression, she couldn't discern anything.
Willow continued to eat her breakfast with her head down, pretending not to hear Mother Jonah talking about Laura.
Mitchell remained expressionless, slightly furrowing his brows, not saying a word. He looked up at the girl sitting in front of him and, not knowing what she was thinking, suddenly remarked, "You're eating your third egg."
Willow looked up at Mitchell, her face quickly turning red uncontrollably.
Mother Jonah and Daniel were both stunned. Mother Jonah quickly scolded Mitchell, "Why are you staring at Willow like that? If she likes to eat, let her eat more. What's wrong with eating three eggs? I once saw someone online eat ten eggs." She then handed another egg to Willow, saying, "Willow, eat your own, don't mind him."
Willow awkwardly took the egg, smiling foolishly. Mitchell looked at her, a barely noticeable smile playing on his lips.
Finally, she was willing to look up at him.
Mitchell peeled an egg himself and said, "Laura and I are incompatible."
