Chapter 402 You Were My Greatest Joy
When Willow was born, Mitchell had just started first grade. One day after school, he saw his mom holding the less-than-one-year-old Danielle and saying they were going to the Nelson Mansion to see the new baby. Richard had yet to come home. From his mom, Jessica, Mitchell learned that Patricia from the Nelson Family had just given birth and was coming home from the hospital today. Several families were going to see the new baby.
Although Mitchell was still very young, he already showed some handsome features. Even in his school uniform, he looked elegant and attractive, making him a favorite among the ladies. Listening to Jessica, he showed no expression on his face but thought to himself, 'What's so special about a baby? They all look like Danielle.'
Jessica said that if he didn't want to go, he could stay home and do his homework. After thinking for a moment, Mitchell decided to go with Jessica.
When Danielle was born, she was underweight and had jaundice, so she looked small and not very fair. Mitchell thought all babies looked like that. So when he followed Jessica to see Willow lying in her little bed, he was taken aback. Willow was chubby, fair, and very cute. Mitchell pondered, 'Why did this baby look different from Danielle?'
Standing by the little bed, Mitchell reached out his hand. Willow, just a few days old, waved her tiny hands and grabbed his finger tightly, even seeming to smile at him. Mitchell was stunned, feeling something stir deep inside him. He smiled back at the little one, who didn't understand anything yet.
He ran to find Patricia, who was chatting with Jessica, and asked, "Patricia, is the baby a boy or a girl?"
"It's a girl," Patricia said with a smile. Mitchell thought to himself that the baby would definitely grow up to be prettier than Danielle.
"Mitchell will have to take care of two sisters from now on," Jessica added. Mitchell took this seriously. From then on, Willow received the same treatment as Danielle from him. Whatever Danielle had, Mitchell would make sure Willow had it, too. In the long years that followed, he took meticulous care of Willow, who had grabbed his finger tightly the first time they met.
From then on, Mitchell often saw Willow. Since Danielle was only a few months older than Willow, Patricia and Jessica were always together with the kids, either at the Nelson or the Jonah Mansion. Every day after school, the first thing Mitchell did after putting down his backpack was to greet Danielle and Willow. Danielle grew as chubby as Willow. Both of them were fair and cute, and the older boys loved to play with them. Cheryl, who was born a month before Danielle, seemed to envy Willow and Danielle since his parents adored them.
Among the older boys, Mitchell was the most attentive to the two little girls. Patrick and Liam preferred to stay after school to play basketball before heading home. Matthew and Victor seemed more mature. They were always focused on their studies and were often seen seriously reading or studying. Only Mitchell couldn't wait to get home every day after school to take care of Willow, taking on the responsibility of being an older brother silently.
At one year old, Willow began to babble and take her first steps. Besides her parents, she would always call out "Mitchell" and, even when she was still unsteady on her feet, would walk towards Mitchell whenever she saw him. Seeing her wobbly steps, Mitchell would immediately drop whatever he was doing and run to her, afraid she might fall.
At two years old, Willow was already adept at walking independently and articulating a myriad of words. She frequently strolled hand in hand with Danielle in the yard, while Cheryl, with a runny nose, was a constant presence in their midst. Both little girls were adorned by their mom, resplendent in elegant dresses, truly resembling little princesses themselves.
At three years old, Danielle started kindergarten. Willow, being a few months younger, wasn't supposed to go yet. Hearing that Danielle was going to school, she cried and insisted on going, too. Fortunately, Lloyd and Patricia sent her along as well, and Cheryl was in the same class. There were many kids in the kindergarten, but Danielle and Willow still preferred to play together. Danielle, being bold and queen-like from a young age, led the other kids in play, especially bossing Cheryl around every day.
After the girls started kindergarten, they had more playmates, and Willow no longer followed Mitchell around as much. However, Mitchell still saw her often. Willow was always playing with Danielle on the mat at home or riding toy cars in the yard, looking carefree and happy. At that time, Mitchell didn't have much homework in elementary school, so he often came home early to play with them.
For Willow, kindergarten was a very happy time. Her quiet and well-behaved nature made her popular with both teachers and classmates. When playing games and role-playing, Danielle was always the queen or princess, and Cheryl was her servant. Those times, in retrospect, were joyful and fleeting.
Soon, Danielle was ready to start elementary school, and Mitchell moved up to middle school with more demanding coursework. This time, no amount of crying from Willow could change the fact that she wasn't old enough to start elementary school. Willow cried at home for two days, and no one could console her; she just wanted to go to elementary school. Finally, Mitchell and Danielle went to see Willow together. Danielle promised to wait for her at the elementary school, and Mitchell assured her that he would often visit her at kindergarten. Only then did Willow, sniffling, gradually stop crying.
Willow remembered this well. Every day after school, she would eagerly wait at the door for Danielle and Mitchell to come and play with her. Danielle, having just started school, didn't have much homework and finished early, so she still played together with Willow every day. However, Mitchell had noticeably less time to play with them. By the time he finished his homework and had dinner, Willow was already asleep.
Willow was always happy, and Mitchell would rush through his homework at school so that he could have time to play with them when he got home.
