Chapter 258 Bold Speculation

Daniel was visiting her parents today and had no idea her brother would be back, too. They had already finished dinner and tidied up. After dinner, her dad and mom went out for a walk, and she was sitting on the couch in the living room, watching a boring variety show, thinking of calling Willow to chat. Her brother suddenly appeared behind her silently, and she had no idea how much he had heard.

Mitchell put down the car keys, loosened his tie, took off his suit jacket, unbuttoned his shirt, and casually said, "I just got back."

Just as Daniel let out a sigh of relief, she heard Mitchell ask, "Were you just on the phone with Willow? Is she sick?" Daniel was taken aback. How much had her brother actually heard? She hesitated and tentatively replied, "Yes, Willow accidentally caught a cold. I told her to rest for a few days and not push herself to go to work."

Mitchell nodded, "I see, probably because both of you have the habit of using air conditioning and kicking off the blanket at night." Listening to Mitchell's words, Daniel finally completely relaxed. Her brother probably hadn't heard the earlier conversation and didn't know that Willow got sick because Jimmy took her to the mountaintop to stargaze. She didn't know why, but she didn't want her brother to see the reason behind Willow's illness. Despite her brother's smooth progress with Laura, it still felt unreal to her.

Mitchell took his suit jacket and turned around tiredly to go upstairs. Daniel watched her brother's back, and for some reason, she felt that her brother looked lonely for a moment. Suddenly, she felt a little soft-hearted and asked with concern, "Mitchell, have you eaten? Do you want me to make you some food?"

"I ate outside." Mitchell didn't even turn his head as he took his jacket and went upstairs.

"Okay then." Daniel sat back on the couch, continuing to watch her variety show, but couldn't focus at all. The current shows were getting more and more boring. She glanced upstairs as she changed channels with the remote control, feeling like her brother wasn't quite right today.

Mitchell returned to his room and undressed before taking a shower. When the young girl from the project team came to deliver the files yesterday, he initially thought it was Willow. However, he was caught off guard when he looked up and saw someone else. He finally realized it when the young girl called out to him a few times. Willow always handled Laura's company projects, so when there was a need for additional agreements, Mitchell assumed it would be Willow delivering the files. He had planned to personally tell her about the possibility of receiving extra bonuses by the end of the year, and he even imagined how excited the money enthusiast would be upon learning about the additional reward.

At that moment, feeling a bit awkward, Mitchell lightly coughed and casually asked after taking the folder, "Where is Ms. Nelson?". He remembered the young girl rolling her eyes before replying, "They are all busy, so I brought them up., President Jonah. Is there anything I can help you with?"

"No, everything's fine. You can go back now." Mitchell waved his hand, dismissing her. He watched the young girl leave with a cheerful demeanor, sighed heavily, and then put down the pen in his hand. He leaned back in his chair and spent the rest of the afternoon lost in thought, unable to focus on anything.

As it approached the end of the workday, Mitchell went downstairs to wait for Willow. He planned to take her to the same Baked Macaroni restaurant they had previously enjoyed together. He was worried that she might not have a proper meal again at night and didn't want to make it obvious that his invitation was intentional. Therefore, he decided to make it seem like he was doing it "by the way." However, when he saw Willow walk out, a young man hurriedly approached her from outside the door and walked toward her. Mitchell watched them through the glass, and he recognized the young man as Willow's former junior high school classmate. The two of them stood face to face, engaging in a conversation he couldn't hear. The young man put a hat on Willow and then carried her into the car before they both drove away.

After they left, Mitchell slowly released the tight grip of his fists. At that moment, a wild idea sprouted in his mind – if Willow wasn't waiting for her classmate who went abroad anymore and was willing to accept someone else, did he also have a chance? This idea grew bigger and bigger as if it wanted to break free from some chains.

In the end, Mitchell went to the Baked Macaroni restaurant by himself and had a bowl of Baked Macaroni. Then, he returned to the office and sat alone until dawn.

After showering, Mitchell came out of the room and took a small iron box from the deepest drawer of his closet. He sat on the edge of the bed and cautiously opened the box, carefully taking out its contents.

Inside the box were several small cards and a few yellowed old photos indicating their age. Mitchell took out one of the photos and stared at the person in it. The picture showed a girl wearing a school uniform with her hair tied in a ponytail. Even though it was just a profile view, her radiant smile was evident. Furthermore, from the angle of the photo, it was taken secretly. Mitchell stared at the picture for a while, flipping it over to find strong handwriting that read: "May your smile be as beautiful as flowers throughout your life."

There was another beautiful font on the small cards, and most of them contained little wishes, such as becoming an honor student, scoring 100 on an exam, getting into the desired high school, securing concert tickets, or being admitted to the architecture department at A University. There were a dozen or so of these small cards, all written by the same person.

Mitchell flipped through each card, carefully putting them back into the drawer of the closet. Then he walked out onto the balcony, took out his cell phone, and hesitated about whether to contact Willow. He clicked on her Facebook profile picture, then exited, and finally sent her a message.

[Daniel said you have a cold, are you okay? If you're not feeling well, rest at home for a few days.]

Daniel was chatting with Willow on Facebook in the living room downstairs.

Daniel: [When Willow called you just now, Mitchell came back home without anyone noticing. You have no idea how startled I was.]

Without waiting for Willow's reply, Daniel continued to send her messages.

Daniel: [I don't know how he came back so late. Are you guys really busy over there? He came back from work overtime today. However, he happened to hear me telling you to rest more, so Mitchell already knows about your cold. But he probably didn't hear about Jimmy taking you to the mountaintop to watch the stars.]

Willow finished showering and picked up her phone, seeing several messages from Daniel. Suddenly, she saw one from Mitchell and quickly clicked on his profile with the nickname "Mitchell." She was puzzled by the greetings Mitchell sent her. How did he know she had a cold? Then she opened Daniel's messages and understood. She casually took a screenshot of Mitchell's message and sent it to Daniel, along with the words: [I've already received Mitchell's concern.]

Daniel looked up at the upstairs, suddenly coming up with a bold guess in his mind.
