Chapter158 Pepper Spray Defense

Peter North looked at Juliet without a hint of emotion.

Encouraged by his gaze, Juliet pressed on, "As much as Luann Weaver is my sister, and I really shouldn't speak ill of her behind her back..."

"But this time, I just can't stand it, and I feel it's so unfair to Peter."

Peter turned his head, raised an eyebrow, and silently questioned her, 'Why?'

"I have no idea how my sister suddenly got into racing or why she joined the competition," Juliet muttered.

"But with Peter's superstar status in racing, there's no way Luann Weaver didn't know about him."
She knew perfectly well that this competition was Peter's first after coming back home, and it was crucial. The media and journalists were all waiting to cover it.

Yet, she not only stole your thunder but also nabbed the first-place prize right out from under you, even cunningly convincing Myron Curtis to place a hefty bet in her favor...

"That first-place spot should've been Peter's!" Juliet Weaver declared with such vivid emotion, her face flushing with excitement.

Her eyes were full of expectation as she looked at Peter North, awaiting his response.

After what felt like an eternity, Peter finally spoke.

"So, you think I need someone to just hand me the title of first place?"

Juliet's expression changed, and she gestured frantically.

"No, no, Peter, that's not what I meant..."

Peter leisurely sipped his tea.

"But it sounds to me like it is."

Juliet, flustered, stammered, "I just meant..."

Peter cut her off.

"This race was open for anyone to enter."

"Why should the contest be limited just because I've decided to join?"

"And you know it's wrong to talk behind people's backs, yet you do it right in front of me."

"Miss Juliet Weaver, you're trying to smear Luann Weaver's name in front of me, while also not wanting to seem like you're spreading rumors."

"You keep calling her sister with your words, but I don't hear a trace of respect."

Juliet was dumbfounded.

Why did Peter's words sound like he was defending Luann Weaver?

Seeing Juliet at a loss, Ally quickly stepped in. "What's with you?"

"Juliet is just trying to comfort you out of concern."

"And besides, that Luann Weaver really isn't a good woman..."

Peter gave them a cold look, clearly displeased.

"Who are you calling not a good woman?"

"Luann Weaver!"
"I won't allow you to talk about her like that."
Confusion painted Ally's face.
"What's up with you?"

Peter's tone was nonchalant and calm. "I don’t care what personal issues you have with her, or how much you resent her, but you can't say a single bad word about her in front of me."

Juliet and Ally exchanged looks, their expressions showing disbelief at Peter's words.
"Have you lost your mind? How long have we all known Luann Weaver, and how long have you?"

Peter North replied indifferently, "Trust me, I've known her way longer than any of you."

"So don't get your hopes up thinking I'd join your little smear campaign."

After dropping those words, Peter North slammed down his glass and stood up to leave, spilling the drink across the table.

Juliet Weaver watched his retreating figure, perplexed. "What's going on? I thought your brother's been abroad for years. How does he even know Luann Weaver, let alone for a long time?"

Juliet continued, pinching the bridge of her nose with a sigh, “Ah, maybe I spoke out of turn just now.”

Ally clenched her fists, irritation lacing her tone. "It has nothing to do with you, it's my brother who's been hoodwinked by Luann Weaver."

"I just don't get it, why are so many men on Luann Weaver's side? What's so great about her anyway?"

Juliet looked down, sadness etched onto her face.

Ally gently stroked her hair, trying to comfort her.

"Don't worry, once I get the chance, I'll make sure to get even for you."

"Thanks, Ally."

Hidden behind the clouds, the crescent moon shyly concealed itself, and the night breeze carried a chill.

Joshua lay sprawled at the entrance to the estate. His exposed lower back was fiery red with welts that looked like the marks of a cane.

"I should've known... that wretched... would snitch to Grandpa..."

Coughing weakly, his eyes were clouded with a gloom.

"Joshua!" The sound of rushed footsteps accompanied by the soft, sweet voice of the girl came from behind.

A young girl in her early twenties, clad in a white floral dress, ran towards him in a panic.

With tears welling up, she knelt beside Joshua, trying to help him to his feet.

"Bro, oh, bro... why did Grandpa punish you again... Can't you just apologize to him?"

"Why do you have to be so stubborn..."

Her delicate, doll-like face was pitiable, especially with tears streaming down.

Joshua lifted a hand hesitantly, and with the clean side of his wrist, he gently wiped away her tears.

"Stop crying, I'm alright, really."

The young girl sobbed and snuffled, “Your back is all messed up, and you say you’re fine! It's all that Luann Weaver's fault, isn't it? Don’t worry, bro, I'll take care of her for you!”

Upon hearing these words, Joshua's concern flared, and he tried to straighten his back, only to wince from the pain.
"Emma, you're no match for Luann Weaver. Stay out of this," he warned.

Emma shook her head vehemently, her pigtailed hair bobbing slightly.

"How can I just sit back when she's walked all over you like this?" she protested.

"Not only did she snatch your job, but she also put you through so much pain. I'm not going to let her sit pretty in the executive position!"

There was a brief silence from Joshua. "It's Director," he corrected.

"Oh, right! Director!" she said, her fists clenched, a fire of determination burning in her eyes.

Joshua massaged his temples, feeling a headache coming on.

"I told you not to make a scene. Just stick with Grace... where is she?"

Emma's gaze shifted, avoiding his question.

"She... she's off to a film shoot!"

"Joshua, I'll head upstairs to get organized. Tomorrow, I'm going to confront that Luann Weaver!"

Without another word, Emma dashed to the third floor and into her room, rummaging through her things. Items scattered across the floor as she pondered her choices.
