Chapter 394 Brake Failure
The key hit the ground right by Luann's feet, kicking up a little dust cloud.
Mike, all worried about what Luann might do, just hopped into the car the driver brought. He stuck his head out the window and spat. "Just you wait!"
Without waiting for the driver, he started the car himself.
Luann watched him drive off, not even a bit annoyed. She grinned. "I gave you a choice, Dad, but you blew it."
She picked up the key and got into her own car.
Mike sped down the road, constantly checking the rearview mirror to see if anyone was tailing him.
Still uneasy, he kept glancing back. Seeing Luann hadn't caught up, he felt more confident. 'She must've messed with that car. Did she really think I'd fall for it?'
Feeling relieved, Mike couldn't help but feel a bit proud of himself. "How does this GPS thing work?"
He held the wheel with one hand and fumbled around with the other. He hadn't driven in years and was clueless about the car's settings.
"My phone's dead, and there's no one around. I'll just wait until I find someone to ask." Mike hummed a tune, tapping his fingers on the wheel like he was on a joyride.
After a turn, he saw a car speeding towards him.
He wanted to slow down and ask for directions, but something felt off. 'Isn't that Luann? How did she get ahead of me? Is she trying to block me?' Just as he thought that, Luann's car came straight at him.
Mike jerked the wheel, tires screeching. He barely avoided Luann's car.
"Crazy! If you wanna die, why take me with you?" Mike yelled.
But before he could relax, Luann rammed him from behind again!
Mike couldn't match her and tried to speed up to shake her off.
He knew even racing legend Peter couldn't beat Luann, let alone him. He needed to stop the car and run into a narrow alley where she couldn't follow.
He hit the brakes, but nothing happened.
In disbelief, he stomped on the brakes several more times, but the car didn't slow down. "How can this be?"
The car was hit hard from behind, spinning wildly and sliding dozens of feet.
"Luann!" Mike roared in fury.
He thought he had it all figured out, but Luann outsmarted him. "If my car can't stop, then you won't get off easy either! Come on! If we're going down, we're going down together!"
Mike's eyes turned bloodshot, madness creeping in. 'If I have to die, fine! But Luann has to pay, too!'
The two cars sped towards each other like bullets, aiming to collide.
Through the open window, Mike's face twisted in rage. "Luann! Today, I'm gonna kill you! I'm gonna wipe out the Wright family!"
He saw her face getting closer through the windshield. Luann's expression was cold, not like someone about to die. Just as Mike braced for impact, Luann smiled. Her smile was like warm sunlight melting ice.
At the last second, Luann veered off course, brushing past Mike's car. "You really overestimate yourself," she said. Mike saw a towering tree behind where Luann had been.
Panicked, Mike swerved but couldn't avoid crashing into it. The airbag deployed just in time. Luann drove off without looking back.
In the VIP ward, Brianna stood with a lunchbox, staring at the empty bed.
Just as she wondered where he had gone, her phone rang. "Hello, is this Mike's wife, Brianna?"
"Yes, it is."
"Your husband has been in a car accident. Please come to Northgate General Hospital as soon as possible."
The lunchbox fell, spilling its contents. Brianna gasped and hurriedly knelt to clean up.
A nurse walked in. "I'll take care of it."
"Thank you," Brianna said and rushed out.
Outside the emergency room, with its red light flashing, Brianna and Juliet waited anxiously. But their feelings were different. Juliet was more afraid of Mike dying because she hadn't scammed enough money yet!
"Mom, should we call Luann? If Dad dies, she has to pay, right?" Juliet said.
Brianna, eyes red, looked at her in disbelief. "What nonsense are you talking about? Your father will be fine!"
Juliet pouted.
Suddenly, the emergency room door opened. A blood-stained doctor walked out. "Where are the patient's family members?"
Brianna rushed forward. "I am! I'm his wife. How is he?"
The doctor didn't answer but nodded slightly. A nurse handed over a document.
"A critical condition notice?" Brianna's tears fell instantly.
Juliet urged, "Mom, sign it quickly; don't delay the treatment."
Sobbing, Brianna picked up the pen and signed her name.
The doctor went back into the emergency room.
Brianna and Juliet waited the whole day.
