Chapter 411 Two Phone Calls
In the dimly lit room, two figures moved in sync.
"You're amazing," Carol purred, snuggling into the man's arms, her cheeks flushed and a sheen of sweat on her forehead. She stroked her swollen belly, smiling seductively.
The man gave her a slightly reproachful look. "Your belly's getting bigger. We should probably cool it with the sex. It's not good for the baby."
Carol pouted playfully. "But I can't help it. Watson's too old and can't keep up. He's done in a minute or two. How am I supposed to be satisfied with that?"
"Well, I'm pretty good at it," the man said, lifting his chin proudly. "By the way, babe, can you give me some more money?"
Carol sighed, supporting her back as she reached for a bank card on the bedside table. "Here, Watson just gave it to me. There's about a hundred grand on it."
"Thanks, babe!" The man pressed his face against Carol's belly, feeling the baby move inside. "What a good kid, already securing a bright future for us. But thinking about my child calling Watson 'dad' after he's born, it kinda bugs me."
Carol shrugged. "As long as there's money. Besides, I never planned to stick with Watson forever. Once I'm fully part of the Curtis family, I'll find a way to get all his assets, then we'll get a divorce and elope to another city."
"Alright, but you'll have to put up with that old, ugly man for a while."
"Whatever, he treats me well, gives me whatever I want, and he's hardly ever around. It's actually pretty comfortable."
They shared a knowing smile.
To avoid raising any suspicions, Mike didn't rush his plan. He waited a week, carefully sending the nurse away.
With the experience from last time, Mike found it easier this time. He timed it to avoid the nurse's medication rounds and managed to crawl out of the ward.
He thought he'd be free once he left the ward, but when he saw the seemingly endless corridor, he was stunned for a full minute. "Luann, you did this on purpose," he muttered.
Mike gritted his teeth, using his hands and elbows to inch forward. After what felt like forever, he finally reached the elevator. But he couldn't press the button.
Mike waited until someone came by. Seeing his struggle, the person asked, "What's going on with you? Should I call a nurse?"
"No need," Mike said, his face pale and lips cracked. "Just press the button for the first floor for me."
The person gave Mike a doubtful look but pressed the button. As the elevator doors closed, they walked away.
Since this was the VIP ward, there weren't many people around. Mike's hospital gown was filthy from being dragged on the floor.
A patrolling security guard noticed and came over. "Need some help?"
Mike nodded. "I need a phone to make a call."
The guard helped Mike up and got him to a nearby chair, then called a colleague to bring a wheelchair.
Sitting in the wheelchair with the phone in hand, Mike felt a wave of relief. He shakily dialed a number.
After a few rings, a pleasant female voice answered. "Hello, who is this?"
To Mike, that voice was a lifeline. His eyes welled up, and he croaked, "Brianna, it's Mike. Get to the hospital, quick! Luann's torturing me!"
There was a long silence on the other end before Brianna hung up.
Mike couldn't believe it. He called again, but she hung up.
On the tenth call, Brianna finally answered but cut him off. "Mike, how dare you call me? You think I'd help you? Don't call again. We're done."
"Brianna, Brianna!" Mike gritted his teeth, his head pounding. "Damn Brianna, I've spoiled her too much! How dare she ignore me?"
Desperate, Mike called Juliet. The phone rang forever before it was answered impatiently. "Who is this? Wrong number?"
"Juliet, it's Dad," Mike shouted, his voice cracking. This was his youngest daughter, his favorite. She wouldn't leave him hanging.
Juliet glanced at the unknown number, raising an eyebrow. "Dad? Whose phone is this?"
"It's the security guard's. You have no idea, that lunatic Luann has me locked up. She won't let me out. I crawled out. I finally got in touch with you. Juliet, come get me, hurry! I can't stay here another moment, I'm losing it."
Juliet held the phone away, waiting for Mike to finish his rant, then laughed softly. "Dad, you're overestimating me. If Luann's willing to deal with you, she won't show me any mercy."
Mike felt a chill. "What do you mean? You're not going to save me?"
Juliet sighed. "Dad, it's not that I don't want to, but I really can't."
Mike gritted his teeth and cursed. "Juliet! Don't forget we got a lot of money from Wilber! Now you don't want to help me?" He couldn't believe Juliet would betray him now.
Juliet propped her chin with her hand, tracing the rim of her coffee cup. "It's not that I don't want to help you, Dad. If you're sick, you need treatment. Besides, wasn't it you who filed the lawsuit against Luann? Now that she's willing to pay for your medical bills and extend your life, you should be happy."
Mike felt a chill run down his spine. "I'm not sick! Are you cursing me?"
