Chapter 335 Too Restless
The Wright family's villa was brightly illuminated.
Shirley stood upright in the corner.
Kenneth, engrossed in reading documents, occasionally cast glances in her direction.
"So, are you planning to use the pity tactic now?"Kenneth said.
Taking a deep breath, Shirley responded, "Father, you know we can't be separated. Since that's the case, why don't we both find some middle ground and make concessions?"
Kenneth's face remained cold, saying,"Allowing him to marry you is already my final concession!"
"But you also know that joining our family won't be good for Mike's reputation." Shirley paused, "Can't we find another way?"
"If you're worried that I'll go live over there after the marriage, you can rest assured, I will definitely stay on the Upper West Side! I'll also go to the company! I..."
"Enough, stop talking! Stand properly!" Shirley remained silent, standing in the corner all night.
Suddenly, her phone rang, instantly wiping away her melancholy.
Seeing it was Mike calling, she immediately answered."Where are you?"
"Home."
"I'm coming to see you."
"Huh?" Shirley was stunned.
Mike's voice was exceptionally gentle. "You're right. It's time to face those things."
Half an hour later.Mike arrived at the Wright family.
Kenneth pushed his reading glasses up and looked at him.
"Have you made up your mind?"
Mike said, "I won't easily give up on a relationship, nor will I betray Shirley's love for me. I can agree to your family's request."
Shirley murmured in disbelief, "Mike."
'He has sacrificed so much for me,' Shirley thought.
"Dad!" Shirley's tone suddenly became stern, "If Mike and I have children in the future, can they take his last name?"
Kenneth glared at her and said, "Nonsense!"
"Dad! Please!" Shirley didn't want Mike to lose any more dignity.
Kenneth sighed and thought for a moment, saying, "Then have two."
Mike watched the two of them singing in harmony, with a slight smirk of disdain on his lips
'They really knew how to put on a show.
What people said was indeed true.
If he joined their family and had the children take their last name, he would be no different from a mere sperm donor.
He wouldn't let them have their way.
Since he married Shirley, everything of the Wright family would be his!
The last name Wright didn't sound as good as Weaver anyway.'Mike thought.
On the day of the wedding of the Wright family's heiress, they held a simple banquet attended only by close relatives.
Shirley thought,' Mike's self-esteem was quite strong, if the media and reporters made a big deal out of it, he would surely feel uncomfortable.'
Although, she had always wanted a grand and perfect wedding since she was a child.
But Mike thought,'Since Shirley was unwilling to publicize the marriage, she might hold some ulterior motive.'
Less than two months after the wedding, he discovered Shirley secretly meeting with another man.
He followed them, but from a distance, he couldn't hear what they were saying.
He just felt that the smile on Shirley's face was particularly glaring.
"Thank you so much for last time. The money has been transferred to your account, Charles."
"You silly girl, do I look like someone who needs that bit of money?"
"You may not need it, but I can't feel at ease," Shirley said with a bright smile.
"If you really feel bad, just treat me to a meal. Why bother with all this useless stuff?" Charles grabbed Shirley's hand.
Shirley took several steps back, clearly flustered. She said,"You pick the place."
"Alright."
Mike watched them get into the car and leave, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
"It's said that the prettier the woman, the more restless she becomes. How true," he muttered.
"Shirley dares not make our marriage public, so she can make outsiders think she's still single and she can continue to enjoy being pursued."
"Such a scheme, truly a scheme!"
"But since you are heartless, don't blame me for being unjust!"Mike muttered.
So, when Shirley suggested a family trip, Mike tactfully declined, "If we all go, won't it delay matters at the company?"
"I've just started learning a bit and don't want to give up this opportunity for advancement."
"Shirley, you take Dad and Mom. I'll stay home and wait for you to come back!"
"By then, I'll give you a big surprise!"
Shirley pouted slightly, a bit unhappy. "Alright. Good girl."
Mike kissed her on the forehead.
It was also the last time he kissed her.
This trip was a self-drive tour, with a driver taking Kenneth, his wife, and Shirley.
They visited many places. At each new location, Shirley would take photos for Mike.
[It would be great if you were here, the scenery is amazing!]
Mike smirked as he typed on his phone: [The scenery at my home is even better.]
[You've never taken me there!]
[When you come back, I'll take you.]
However, She never came back.
The brakes had been tampered with by someone Mike had hired to tail them, resulting in a tragic accident on a treacherous mountainside.
Kenneth's last act in life was to protect the two women he loved most in his arms.
Luann opened her eyes.
She sat up abruptly.
There was no light in the pitch-black night.
Instinctively, Luann reached out beside her but only touched the cold bedsheet.
No one was there.
Feeling a bit lost, Luann turned on the bedside lamp.
Cold sweat was dripping down her forehead.
The door creaked open.
Myron walked in from outside, "What's wrong?"
He sat on the bed, gently wiping the sweat from her forehead with a tissue, and asked, "Did you have a nightmare?"
Luann nodded, "I dreamt about my mom."
Myron was taken aback.
In all their years of marriage, it was the first time Luann had voluntarily mentioned her mother.
Myron knew that Shirley's death might not have been an accident, and there must have been some reasons that Luann was away for eighteen years before being brought back.
"What did you dream about?"Myron's large hand rested on Luann's back, slowly moving down, as if to comfort her.
Luann, like a deflated doll, leaned weakly on his shoulder.
"I dreamt about so many things."
"In fact, many memories of my mom are almost gone."
"After I turned five, I never saw her again." Luann steadied herself and suddenly looked up.
Her face brushed against his. It seemed she wanted to capture a bit of warmth.
Although they couldn't see each other's expressions, Myron heard her helpless sobs, an expression he had never witnessed before.
She was like a fragile dandelion now, ready to scatter at a touch.
"I really miss her."
