Chapter 395 The Punishment Was Too Lenient
At midnight, the doc came out, looking beat. "The patient's not doing great. We moved him to the ICU for closer watch. You gotta be ready. Go pay the fees first."
Brianna wobbled, and Juliet caught her.
The ICU wasnot just pricey; it was a place where making it out ain't a sure thing.
Juliet hesitated. "Doc, how long's he gonna be in there?"
"Depends on his condition."
After the doc left, Juliet held Brianna's hand. "Mom, Dad's in a lot of pain. Even if he pulls through, he's still got cancer. Maybe we should..."
Brianna's eyes welled up. "Juliet, that's your father in there."
Juliet nodded. "I know, but we gotta be real. Even if he makes it, the treatments will cost a ton. He'll suffer, and so will we. You know our situation. If we blow all our money, he might not make it, and our future will be rough. You gotta think about us, too."
Brianna was firm. "I won't use your money. I've saved some over the years. I'll go get it now."
Juliet's heart skipped a beat. "Mom, you had savings? Why didn't you tell me?"
Brianna replied, "It's money your dad gave me years ago. I bought some branded stuff, sold what I didn't need, and saved the cash. It's not much."
"Mom, let me get it for you," Juliet offered, her eyes shifting.
"Alright, but hurry back. It's in the safe under the wardrobe." Brianna handed her the key.
"Okay." Juliet quickly left the hospital.
'I don't see the point in saving someone who's dying,' Juliet thought. She had no intention of bringing the money back. With that cash, she and Brianna could enjoy themselves.
Juliet went home, found the money, turned off her phone, and bailed.
Brianna waited at the hospital for two hours. Even if Juliet had gone back and forth a few times, it would've been enough time.
She called Juliet, but the phone was off.
"Where did Juliet go?" Brianna asked the maid over the phone.
The maid said, "Ms. Weaver didn't say where she was going, but she went into your bedroom and seemed to take something."
Brianna realized. 'Did Juliet take the money and leave because she didn't want to save Mike?'
Brianna's body went limp, and she sat in the chair, dazed. Tears silently streamed down her face.
Her phone screen stayed on Luann's contact number, but she didn't dial.
From her perspective, she and Mike were husband and wife, and she could spend money to save him. But from Luann's perspective, Mike was the one who killed her family.
"If I call Luann now, it'll just add to her pain." Brianna thought, closing her eyes and giving up the idea. But then, Luann called. "Brianna."
"Luann?" Brianna quickly wiped her tears, trying to sound normal.
Luann got straight to the point. "Did he make it through?"
Brianna started crying again. "You know?"
"Yeah."
"He's not out of danger yet," Brianna said, not mentioning the money. She knew Luann wouldn't want to spend a dime on Mike, the Wright family's enemy.
But then Luann asked, "Do you have enough money?"
Brianna was stunned. "Luann, why are you asking?"
"I transferred a million bucks to your account. Use it to save him," Luann said and hung up.
A second later, Brianna got the deposit notification.
Brianna sobbed, covering her face. "Luann, thank you, really thank you."
Luann leaned against the headboard, tossing her phone aside. Myron sat next to her, gently holding and patting her back.
Luann's muffled voice came out. "He thinks he can die so easily? That would be too light a punishment. When my mom lost my grandpa, she lived in pain and torment every day, taking a lot of meds. He should feel that kind of pain, too."
Struggling on the edge of death was excruciating.
"Luann," Myron said, gently kissing her hair.
Her tone was light, but her whole body exuded a shadow of hatred. He didn't want to see this side of Luann, buried in resentment. "He won't have a good ending."
"Luann, calm down," Myron spoke softly, trying to comfort her.
Luann lifted her head from his embrace, smiling faintly. "Don't worry about me. I know what I'm doing."
She had lived with Mike for four years, hiding it well. So, there was no need to think she would lose her head at such a critical moment.
"Okay," Myron said, not knowing how to comfort her. The only thing he could do was stay by her side, quietly guarding her. This silent protection was more useful than a thousand words.
"Alright, it's late. Let's get some rest," Luann said lightly, lifting the blanket and getting in.
She closed her eyes, back to Myron, seemingly sleeping soundly. But when the light was turned off and Myron hugged her from behind, a tear rolled down her cheek, soaking into the pillow and disappearing quickly.
Brianna paid the fees with Luann's money. The long rescue process began.
The ICU didn't allow family visits, so Brianna could only occasionally wear protective clothing and look at him from a distance.
Mike's injuries were severe. Although the airbag deployed and protected him somewhat, his chest was severely compressed. His leg was also severely fractured. His body was covered in tubes, an oxygen mask on his face, wrapped like a mummy.
Brianna prayed, "Mike, I hope you get better soon."
