Chapter 168 A Fruitless Endeavor

The assistant's hand had swelled up, hot and throbbing with pain.
She clutched her right wrist with her left hand, her palm uncontrollably trembling.
The resentment in her eyes was evident as she looked at Luann Weaver.
She couldn't fathom why Grace, who was usually so unforgiving, had let Luann off so easily this time, indifferent to all the outrageous things she had said and done.

"Grace, are we really going to just wait here indefinitely?" she asked impatiently. "How long are we supposed to stay?"

If Luann Weaver was deliberately blocking them, could it mean they were stuck there for the entire night?
Grace pondered for a moment.
"Call the police and have them tow her car."
The assistant’s eyes lit up in agreement, and she nodded eagerly.

The police were dispatched quickly.
Jasmine furrowed her brows, worried.
"the Curtis family is very influential in the Upper West Side. Grace probably has some connections in the government. She wouldn't really have Luann’s car towed, would she?"

Noticing Jasmine's gaze, he said with a dismissive wave, "Just enjoy the show."
Jasmine looked confused.

"Miss Grace, which car is in violation?"
The assistant popped open Grace's car door and pointed out the offending vehicle to them.
"Sergeant, that one there; it even hit our car!"
"And it's blocking us, not letting us leave!"
"Grace has a show recording at five in the morning. Her sleep is already short, and this delay is just unacceptable!"

The sergeant looked where the assistant was pointing.
His brow wrinkled in consternation.
The car in question was parked within its spot, not crossing any lines.
Under these circumstances, there was no right to tow it away.
If any car should be towed, it would be Grace's...
"Don't just stand there; tow her car away!" the assistant urged.

The sergeant felt torn, knowing Grace's reputation but also the law.
Grace’s reputation was well known to him, it wasn't easy to counter her orders.
"Whose car is this?" he asked.

Luann Weaver popped her head out, "Mine."
"Could you please move your car?" the sergeant asked, maintaining a calm tone.

Luann Weaver smiled, her demeanor gracious and her dark eyes sparkling like stars.
"You must be mistaken," she said, her voice cheerful. "My car's parked just fine."

The sergeant nodded.
"Look, I know, but their car is blocked in and you're the only person around who can move your vehicle. Could you please shift your car?" Luann Weaver put on an innocent face.

"You give me too much credit. Honestly, I can't move it. How 'bout I hand you the keys, and you give it a try?" she said.

The sergeant said nothing, looking grim.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but I may have to authorize having your car towed. Could you please swing by tomorrow to pick it up?"

Hearing this, Luann's assistant couldn't help but smirk with satisfaction.

Luann drawled a slow "Oh."

"Such a hassle."

"I'm sorry, miss, but we have to follow the procedure."

Luann sighed. "Alright then. Just call Myron Curtis tomorrow; he'll come get it."

The mention of the name brought a hush over the group.

The sergeant was the first to snap back to the moment.

"You mean... Myron Curtis? The same Myron Curtis?" he stuttered.

The assistant piped up, his voice shrill with disbelief. "Don't scare us like that! Since when are you connected to Myron Curtis?"

With a notorious rep for being violent and cold-hearted, Myron Curtis was a name that loomed large over the Upper West Side.

Just dropping that name struck an imposing, unnerving chord.

Luann blinked twice, then eyed Grace whose face had turned livid.

"Wait, didn't Miss Grace tell you, I'm her sister-in-law?"

Grace's expression twisted sharply as if the word 'sister-in-law' was a sharp needle piercing her skull.

"S-sister-in-law? You're Luann Weaver?!" The assistant finally caught on, his eyes wide with shock.

Grace found her voice at last.

"This is your car. Why would Myron Curtis retrieve it?"

Luann raised an eyebrow.

"You've got it wrong. The car was a purchase by your big brother."

"So, if you need somebody to pick it up, it's got to be him."

"Hmm, maybe I should just call him right now?"

The sergeant acted quickly, stopping her with a nervous chuckle.

"Luann Weaver, if you could please bear with us... I made a mistake – your car is parked just fine, no need for a tow..."

Luann's pale hand rested on her chin in contemplation.

"If my car's parked correctly, how did it end up colliding with Miss Grace's?"

The sergeant felt a chill that went beyond the evening's cool breeze as he met her gaze, which was compelling yet devoid of any warmth. He shivered uncontrollably.
He frantically said, "It's Miss Grace's car that’s parked incorrectly!"

"Please get out of the vehicle; I need to tow your car."

The sergeant wiped the sweat from his brow.

Better to upset Grace than to cross Myron Curtis!

Imagine not knowing how it all went wrong—what a tragedy that would be.

Grace suppressed her anger and stepped out of the car without a word.

Once the vehicle was towed away, Luann Weaver turned to Nicholas and asked, "How about a late-night bite?"

"Let's go."

Jasmine hesitated, "Should I go with... or not?"

"Just take my car back. I’ll catch up with Luann and she can give me a ride later," he replied.

Grace looked at the two of them and couldn't help but speak up, "Spending the night alone with another man, does Myron Curtis know about this?"

Luann shot her a sidelong glance.

"Which eye of yours saw us alone?"

"Don’t you count as a person?"

With that, Luann got into her car.

Nicholas quickly followed suit.

Then everyone saw Jasmine walking towards Grace's group.

Under their watchful eyes, Jasmine got into the car that had been parked behind theirs...

The group was visibly frustrated.

Caught between a rock and a hard place.

That was exactly the situation!

So, were Luann Weaver and Nicholas the ones who had trapped them?

And to top it all off, Nicholas hadn't said a word about the car, leaving them all to swallow a bitter pill in silence!

After the cars drove away, the assistant exclaimed in despair, "Grace, they actually... Ah!"

Before finishing the sentence, a slap landed on the face.

Grace narrowed her eyes with a hint of allure.

"What a useless fool—good for nothing!"

"So stupid! Can't even handle such a small matter!"
