Chapter 443 Who Exactly Was It

Luann gave a faint smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She patted Holly's shoulder and said softly, "Don't worry. I'm okay."

Holly looked concerned. "Why are you pretending to be tough in front of me?"

Luann went quiet. She couldn't really put her feelings into words. It felt like she had avenged Shirley and the Wright family, but also like she hadn't. Mike's death didn't bring her any satisfaction.

Myron said coldly, "Let's head inside."

Luann nodded and followed him.

Eddy, who had been yawning against the wall in the distance, pulled Holly aside. "Can't you take a hint? Stop hovering around. Luann's got Myron to lean on."

Holly snorted, "What do you know? Love and friendship are different."

Geoffrey was handling the case. Seeing them arrive, he quickly stood up. "Ms. Weaver, three hours ago, Mike was taken from the hospital and driven to an abandoned area in the city. Our preliminary investigation shows that Mike was pushed off the rooftop. There was a witness who saw the whole thing and called the police in time."

Luann frowned slightly. She had gone to bed early last night and hadn't checked the footage on her tablet, so she had no idea Mike had been taken. "Who did it?"

Geoffrey replied, "Wilber."

"Wilber?" Luann was stunned and exchanged a glance with Holly.

They both saw the surprise in each other's eyes, having no idea why Wilber, who should be dealing with Juliet, harmed Mike.

Luann asked, "Was there anyone else besides Wilber?"

Geoffrey answered, "The route was too long to investigate thoroughly, and we haven't reviewed the surveillance footage or the fingerprints on the victim yet."

In other words, there were no leads yet.

Luann asked calmly, "Where's Wilber?"

"He's temporarily detained. Do you want to see him, Ms. Weaver?"

Luann nodded.

In the interrogation room, Luann found Wilber unusually quiet. He sat there, not struggling or resisting, looking as if he had been scared out of his wits.

Luann asked, "What happened?"

She knew Wilber's temperament; even when angry, he would never do something like this. Moreover, this had nothing to do with Mike. He shouldn't get involved in a murder.

Wilber raised his bloodshot eyes, his teeth chattering as if he had seen a ghost.

Luann asked again, "Wilber, tell me, what exactly happened?"

Wilber seemed deaf, unable to communicate normally. The gruesome sight of Mike's death lingered in his mind.

"Wilber, speak." No matter what Luann said, Wilber didn't respond at all. She had to leave.

Geoffrey said, "He seems to be in shock and doesn't want to communicate, so we can't take his statement for now."

Luann asked, "Do you think he did it?"

Geoffrey smiled but didn't answer directly. Before the evidence was conclusive, Wilber was a prime suspect. "Before this incident, Wilber was also involved in a rear-end collision."

After leaving the station, Luann got into the car. Myron drove her to a nearby breakfast stand.

"For him, this might be a kind of relief. Maybe he was always thinking about how to escape the hospital," Luann suddenly said softly.

"He deserved it, no need for pity," Myron said coldly, without a trace of warmth.

"I'm not pitying him; I just think it was too easy for him." Luann leaned back in her seat, looking at the brightening sky outside. "My mom suffered for so many years and died depressed. But for Mike, it was only a few months. I wonder if he regretted everything he did in his last moments."

Myron slowly said, "The scariest thing is when someone believes what they did was right."

Luann nodded. "You're right."

After breakfast, Luann went back to sleep. When she woke up, news of Mike's death had spread all over the internet. Many netizens commented.

[Didn't they say he had a few more months to live? How did he die so suddenly?]

[Pushed off a rooftop? What's going on? Someone wanted to kill him! This needs to be thoroughly investigated!]

[Oh my God, he was already so miserable, practically a dead man. Who could be so cruel?]

Luann had no desire to get involved in these discussions. She was about to go abroad, and with Mike's death, time was tight.

Crisp footsteps came from outside the door. Holly asked, "Luann, are you awake?"

Luann said, "Yes."

Holly pushed the door open, quickly walked over, and sat down beside her, muttering, "There are all kinds of rumors on the Internet. I just discussed with Myron and decided to mention the Wright family's old case to clarify things, so people stop speculating." It was making her annoyed.

Luann nodded. "Handle it as you see fit."

Mike was already dead, so the aftermath didn't really matter much.

Holly asked anxiously, "By the way, did you check the footage? What happened last night?"

Luann grabbed the tablet. Holly immediately leaned in. The two of them watched together.

Luann fast-forwarded the footage to last night. When the caregiver got up to open the door, she slowed the video back to normal speed.

Holly, upon seeing Juliet appear in the surveillance footage, was deeply shocked. She said, "Juliet? Why would she go to Mike's room? What is she saying? What's that document she's making him sign?"

Since the surveillance video had no sound, Holly was anxious to know what had happened. Juliet didn't stay long before leaving, and then Wilber came in and took Mike away.

Holly frowned. She knew things were definitely not as simple as they seemed. "The last footage from the hospital shows Wilber pushing Mike out. Luann, what do you think?"

Luann stared at the video for a long time, then shook her head slightly. "I'm not a detective, so I don't know."

Wilber had no motive to harm Mike. Luann felt conflicted and wondered whether Juliet would really be that cruel.
