Chapter 458 Truly Admitted Defeat
Outside the jump tower, which was over twenty stories high, a small line was forming. But whenever it was someone's turn, there were always a few scared people who would run out of the line.
Joshua asked the staff nervously, "This looks really high, doesn't it?"
The staff member replied casually, "Not high at all, just 200 feet."
Joshua was stunned. "Just?"
"Yeah, the highest jump tower in the world is over 1,500 feet. Ours is just 200 feet, so it's pretty average!"
Joshua felt a push on his back and was forced to take two steps forward. Turning around, he saw Hill's slightly playful and challenging look.
Hill asked, "You're not scared, are you?"
Remembering what he had said before leaving home, Joshua said, "Of course not, but it's my first time, so I'm a bit nervous."
"It's our turn," Hill said, pulling Joshua by the arm to sit down.
Joshua was quite scared, not daring to move as the staff helped him with the safety measures. He really regretted it meddling in Luann's affairs.
A fair, slender hand appeared in front of him. Hill said, "If you're scared, hold onto me."
Joshua slapped it away forcefully. "Bullshit!"
As a sharp bell rang, Joshua felt the machine move. The next second, it shot up at a speed so fast that no one could react.
Joshua's face turned pale, instantly losing all color. When they came down, his legs were weak.
Hill, on the other hand, didn't make a sound the entire time, walking as if nothing had happened.
"I can't do this anymore." Joshua's stomach churned, and the last bit of his sanity told him he must not throw up in front of Hill.
"Then rest here for a bit," Hill said considerately, "I know where the bumper cars are. I'll go find Luann."
Joshua, about to sit down, immediately stood up. "No, why are you always thinking about finding her?"
Hill responded with a question, "I'm a guy, who else should I be looking for if not a girl?"
That made sense. He found it hard to argue.
After catching his breath, Joshua resignedly asked, "What else do you want to play?"
"Pirate ship, pendulum ride, roller coaster, haunted house..."
The more Joshua listened, the more he shivered. He couldn't handle any of that. "Can't you pick something milder?"
Hill raised an eyebrow, "Then you pick one. I like high-altitude rides, not ground ones."
Joshua thought for a moment before asking, "How about the Ferris wheel?"
A fleeting sparkle appeared in Hill's eyes. She made a face of disdain, as if mocking Joshua's lack of courage. "Alright then."
Joshua could tell, but it was better than losing his life. He had already planned that they would sit separately. But when they got there, the staff said, "There's only one left, you two can go together."
Joshua immediately said, "We'll wait for the next round."
"The next round will be the same. The Ferris wheel is very popular. You might as well come back in two hours."
Joshua gritted his teeth and pulled Hill inside.
The space was small, only enough for four people to sit face-to-face. To avoid awkwardness, they sat opposite each other, but their eyes kept meeting. Sitting together would be too intimate.
Hill turned her head to look out the window. Her mind was filled with Holly's suggestion. "The Ferris wheel is the best place to build a relationship at an amusement park. If a guy and a girl are alone in a small space, the atmosphere must be very romantic. Then you can pretend to lose your balance and fall into his arms. Isn't that easy?"
Hill didn't feel the romantic atmosphere, only the overwhelming awkwardness. Forget it, she had to rely on her own skills.
Hill lowered her head. There was no movement for a long time.
Joshua fidgeted with his fingers, his thoughts wandering. Suddenly, he heard a sniffle. "Hey, what's wrong?"
Hill didn't respond, just buried her head lower.
"Are you okay?" Joshua asked.
Hill finally spoke, but her voice had a faint sob, as if she was trying hard to hide it. "I'm fine, thank you."
"Thank me for what?" Joshua felt a bit confused.
"The Ferris wheel is big and high. Every time I passed by the park, I would see parents taking their kids on the Ferris wheel. It looked so nice. I always thought, if only I could do that one day. I never thought it would actually come true," Hill said softly.
Joshua felt a pang of sadness. He patted Hill's shoulder. "It's okay, don't be sad. If you want to do something in the future, just tell me. I'll do my best to make it happen."
Hill looked up, her eyes a bit red. "Why are you so good to me? We're not related."
Joshua's mouth twitched. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to win Hill over. He said, "I just feel sorry for you."
Hill started crying. "I've been an orphan since I was a kid, always wandering. You're the first person willing to take care of me like this. I'm really touched."
Joshua awkwardly patted his pockets, finding no tissues.
The next second, Hill buried herself in his arms, using his clothes to wipe her tears.
Joshua's hands froze in mid-air, and after a long time, he sighed in resignation.
Meanwhile, in a cozy house in Unionia, two sneezes rang out. A middle-aged couple looked at each other. They got up to close the window.
"Hill has been gone for months. She must be homesick. I wonder how she's living."
"Don't worry, Sunshine contacted me before. She said Hill was with her. The Miller family is reliable!"
The middle-aged couple nodded in agreement, their worries easing. Little did they know, Hill had long forgotten about them.
