Chapter 193 I'll Wait for You

Their car stopped on a secluded stretch halfway up the hill.

As Luann and Holly got out, a roar overhead announced the helicopter’s arrival. It descended slowly.

Luann's expression turned serious as she quickly boarded, pulling Holly up.

"Luann, it'll take us at least ten hours to get back," Holly said.

"Fly." Holly's eyes widened as she clung to Luann's arm.

"Is Adolph in trouble?" Holly gasped in disbelief. "How is that possible?! Adolph's joint is really well-hidden. There's never been a slip-up all these years."

"This is serious. It might even alert the head of the family..." Luann hesitated. "When we cross the border, you should head back."

Without hesitation, Holly said, "No way. I'm sticking with you! Where you go, I go. I came here to be with you, Luann. If you go back, I'm not staying here alone." Holly’s eyes were resolute.

Luann sighed helplessly. "Alright then."

When Holly saw her relent, she relaxed and grabbed the blanket beside her.

"It's still early. You should get some sleep. I'll wake you up when we're close."

Luann closed her eyes, not wanting Holly to worry, but sleep wouldn't come.

Myron stood up.

He stooped down, lighting candles one by one, mesmerized as they burned.

"Everyone, out."

The staff, as if pardoned, quickly slipped away.

"What the hell happened?"

"I don't know. Luann Weaver was at the door. Why did she leave so suddenly?"P

"Myron Curtis is terrifying. I was shaking in my boots."

"Me too."

Myron was the only one left in the restaurant.

He sat at the piano, his slender fingers gracing the keys, playing an elegant piece. He was so noble, graceful, and composed, but his solitary silhouette betrayed a touch of loneliness.

As the melody ended, Myron's lips curved in a tender, unassuming smile.

‘It's alright, I'll wait for you.’

Ten hours later, the helicopter touched down at the private airstrip near the mansion.

The click of exquisite high heels resounded crisply. The hem of a white dress swished around ankles, gently swaying with every step.

Luann asked the doorman, "Has Adolph returned?"

"No word yet."

Luann entered the mansion with a steady face and headed into the second room on the left.

The door opened to reveal a stranger working at the computer.

Luann didn't recognize him.

"How's the tracking going?" Luann's gaze fixed on the screen.

“Adolph and Benjamin's cell phones have been destroyed. Their current status is unknown. Their last known location was right here." The man pointed to a spot on the screen.

Luann wasn't exactly skilled in combat, even though she was marginally sharper than the average person.

If she rushed in without preparation, she'd do nothing but become a hindrance.

Luann said in a voice laced with rationality, "Contact the head of the household. We need backup."

"The head has already been informed, and he does not plan to—" The man's voice trailed off under Luann's icy glare.

"Give me his number."

He hesitated. He was new, barely a year into his duties, and was intimately familiar with the head's temper.

"Luann, I can't risk it."

Holly, irked by his dithering, stepped forward, shouldered him aside, dialed the number, and put it on speaker.

The phone rang for an eternity and almost went to voicemail when it was finally picked up.

The weary voice on the other end said, "Are you trying to get yourself killedP?"

Disturbing his sleep seemed like a surefire way to sign one's death warrant.

The man shuddered, his scalp tingling, a sense of doom flooding his thoughts.

Luann's voice, cold as sharpened steel, responded and shocked the man even more. "Who’s looking for death?"

The man instinctively clutched his head as if he could already see the head storming back to deal with Luann.

But there was only a hush on the other side of the line.

After a lengthy half-minute of silence, a cautious voice said, "Luann PWeaver? You're back?"

"Why aren't you rescuing Adolph?" Luann asked, her face expressionless.

A low chuckle came from the other end. "Are you at the house? I'll head back now."

"Why aren't you rescuing Adolph?" Luann repeated, unflinching.

There was pause, followed by a deep sigh. "I’ll send someone to the rescue immediately..."

"End the call," Luann instructed.

Holly hung up the phone.

The man stood by, mouth agape in utter shock.

What had he just heard?

Had Luann Weaver just spoken to their formidable family head in that commanding tone?

He hadn’t gotten angry, and he had also agreed to her request.

Luann sank back into her chair, high heels tapping lightly on the floor as she pivoted slightly.

The world outside the window was shrouded in darkness, mirroring the gloominess in her heart.

Moments later, the phone rang again.

The man, thrilled, answered, "They found Adolph? Fantastic! I'll send a team right away to pick you up!"

Luann stood up, stopping the man's excited gesture.

"It’ll be just the two of us and a doctor," she interjected.

"To be safe," she added.

"There’s no need to return for now."

The man hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Alright."

"Let's go."

Luann took Holly's hand, and they left for a somewhat secluded cabin where they found Adolph and Benjamin.

Adolph lay unconscious on the bed, his complexion pale, showing no sign of stirring. Benjamin had not been spared injury either. Two bullets had grazed his arm, but it was fortunate that it didn’t pose a threat to his life.

After summoning a doctor to get Benjamin’s wounds appropriately dressed, Benjamin turned to Luann and said, "Luann, there's something important I need to tell you."

"Let's talk outside."

Luann glanced at Holly. "Stay here and take care of Adolph."

"Got it."

Outside in the front yard, Benjamin removed his jacket and laid it on a stone bench, gesturing to Luann to sit. She poured him a cup of tea.

"Luann, what I'm about to tell you happened just a few days ago," he began. "Adolph didn't want me to worry you with this. He was afraid it would cause you unnecePssary stress.

"I didn't want to tell you either, but given the current circumstances which you've seen for yourself, it's clear they're out to kill us.

"And I'm afraid you might also be entangled in this mess."

He paused before asking, "Do you know a man with an 'f' mask?"
