Chapter 397 Going Down Together
Three days later, Ross got thrown into the slammer.
He never thought that after dodging a month-long suspension nightmare, he'd end up in a pitch-black, sunless prison with no way out.
During this time, Brianna barely left the hospital, sometimes just sitting there all day.
When Juliet heard about it, she couldn't care less. She thought Brianna was just burning money but still had to keep up appearances.
"The patient's condition has improved, and he can be moved to a regular ward for observation." Brianna, half-asleep, woke up just in time to catch this.
She jumped up quickly, but her vision went black, and she almost hit the floor. "Doc, what did you just say? Mike pulled through?"
"Yep, he's regained some consciousness."
Brianna let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, doc!"
The doctor waved it off. "But there's a catch."
Brianna's heart skipped a beat. "What's the deal?"
"His leg is severely busted. Whether it can recover..."
"You mean he might be disabled?" Brianna asked, stunned.
"Pretty much, but we gotta wait until his body recovers before starting rehab," the doc said, looking serious. "But he's got late-stage cancer, right?"
"Yeah," Brianna confirmed.
The doc paused. "Even with rehab, it'll take at least six months. You can also choose not to do it."
His meaning was clear. Mike's late-stage cancer couldn't be cured, so fixing his legs might be pointless.
Brianna stood there for a long time, slowly accepting the harsh reality. Thinking Mike was awake and could eat, she rushed to a nearby joint to grab some light food.
When she opened the door, she saw Mike lying on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. "Mike."
Seeing Mike bandaged up like a mummy, Brianna felt a pang in her heart.
Mike seemed excited and tried to get up, but the pain made it impossible.
"Mike, just tell me what you need. Don't push yourself."
Mike breathed heavily, mist forming on his oxygen mask. "Luann!"
Brianna bit her lip, wanting to calm him down but afraid to touch his bandages. "Mike, you asking about Luann? She didn't come, but she gave me a lot of money for your treatment. Honestly, you shouldn't hold such a grudge against her. It's in tough times you see who really cares."
Brianna felt bitter. She never expected Juliet, her daughter of over twenty years, to ditch them at such a critical moment.
Mike had wronged Luann, so Brianna had no right to ask anything from her. But Juliet was different. She grew up with their care, and Mike had been good to her. Yet, Juliet turned out to be an ungrateful daughter who bailed on her dad now!
Brianna couldn't help but wonder if, one day, she was the one lying in the hospital bed, would Juliet make the same choice?
When Mike heard Luann's name, he got super agitated. His eyes widened, he shivered, and his mouth twisted as if trying to speak.
All his limbs strained, his fingers dug into the bed sheets, shaking like a leaf. The heart rate monitor beside him went nuts.
Brianna was freaked out. She covered her mouth in shock and stepped back, yelling, "Doctor! Doctor!"
A nurse rushed in, frowning. "Hold him down."
Someone grabbed Mike's arms, and they gave him a sedative. Mike quickly calmed down, his eyes slowly closing.
The nurse told Brianna, "The patient's mind has just recovered. Don't agitate him."
Brianna had no clue what she had done wrong. When Mike woke up again, it was two hours later.
"Mike," Brianna called softly. She didn't dare to say anything reckless again.
Mike struggled to open his mouth but couldn't get a word out. "You... I..."
"Don't get too worked up. The doc said you're recovering well. Just focus on your treatment and rest, okay?" Brianna smiled gently, her soft words like a comforting hand soothing Mike's wounded heart.
Mike's fingers twitched. Brianna immediately held his hand. "I'm here; I'm right here."
Mike never thought he'd still be alive. In that moment of the car accident, his life flashed before his eyes like a movie. That real brush with death still made him break out in a cold sweat. "It hurts."
Brianna's eyes filled with tears. "I know it hurts, but you're recovering. You'll feel better in a few days."
Mike was really in pain. "Hungry."
Brianna quickly took out the food. "The doc said you can eat a little now, but it's best to have liquid food, so have some oatmeal." She walked to the bedside and gradually lifted the head of the bed.
Mike groaned, sweating from the pain. After barely feeding him some oatmeal, Mike had a bit more energy. "Did you call the cops?"
Brianna nodded. "The officers came by. They said the road where the accident happened was under construction and rarely used, with only one camera that didn't work well. They don't know if it captured anything. They said they would take your statement once you woke up."
"What exactly happened?" Mike immediately got agitated. His face turned pale with anger.
He speculated, 'Luann must have planned this! She knows there are no cameras there, so she made her move!'
"Call... call them... here."
"But your body is so weak..."
"Go call!"
He thought, 'With Luann's determination, she definitely doesn't plan to let me go! Rather than letting her expose the incident from twenty-three years ago, it would be better to go down together! Luann committed attempted murder; she wouldn't escape that charge!'
Brianna hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, I'll call them now."
Soon, two officers arrived. "Mr. Weaver, our investigation shows that there was more than just your car on the road that day, and there are collision marks on the back of your car. What exactly happened? Do you remember the other car's license plate, or the driver's appearance? Was it a man or a woman, do you know?"
Mike's teeth chattered uncontrollably. It took a long time for him to form a complete sentence. "The person who hit me, the person who... who wanted to kill me... was Luann. It was Luann!"
